Marvel superheroes: What's next?

Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America will join forces in the ''Avengers'' movie

No sooner does Iron Man 2 hit theaters than comics fans clamor for more. Marvel Studios is planting seeds for an eventual multi-hero team-up film, but president Kevin Feige insists, ”The goal with each one is just to make a great movie. If people don’t care about that, they’re not going to give a s— about whatever Easter eggs you put in.” Here’s what’s in the superhero pipeline.

Thor (May 2011)
It’s hammer time! Marvel’s next superhero franchise — featuring the Norse god of thunder, who wields a magic hammer — is currently in production, with Kenneth Branagh directing and Star Trek‘s Chris Hemsworth starring.

Captain America (July 2011)
Originally conceived as a Nazi-fighting superpatriot during World War II, Captain America is slated to get his own film next summer, with Fantastic Four vet Chris Evans wielding the red, white, and blue shield.

The Avengers (May 2012)
If you’ve wondered what Samuel L. Jackson’s eye-patch-wearing Nick Fury has been talking about in the Iron Man films — all those references to S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers initiative — he’s been laying down the tracks for a movie that could unite Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, and other Marvel heroes. Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is in talks to direct.

Iron Man 3 (TBA)
Though the Iron Man franchise has been planned as a trilogy, director Jon Favreau says it’s too early to say what an eventual third film might be — or when it might arrive. ”Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers will affect the whole Marvel universe,” notes Favreau.
