Wonder Woman named UN Honorary Ambassador for empowerment of women and girls

The United Nations has announced their honorary ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls, and it’s none other than Wonder Woman.

The beloved superhero — who topped EW’s list of most powerful and influential heroes — will officially receive her title at an event at the United Nations headquarters in New York City on Oct. 21, a date that also happens to be the DC Comics hero’s 75th anniversary.

The ceremony celebrating the character’s latest title will be attended by the UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson, as well as the Themiscyran princess’ most notable portrayers, Lynda Carter and Gal Gadot.

The event will also mark the launch of the UN’s landmark global campaign supporting Sustainable Development Goal #5, which focuses on helping “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.”

The comic book (and soon to be big screen) superhero is no stranger to serving as an ambassador. Wonder Woman (a.k.a. Diana Prince) often acts as a representative of her native land of Themiscyra, an island paradise inhabited by only women known as Amazons.

However, this won’t be Wonder Woman’s only honor this year. The United States Postal Service will be issuing four Forever stamps in honor of the big anniversary, much like they did for Batman in previous years. The stamps will chronicle Wonder Woman’s evolution from her World War II origins to her more modern incarnation today.
