ESPN’s College GameDay Built by The Home Depot Adds College Football Betting Analyst ‘Stanford Steve’ Coughlin for 2023 Season

ESPN’s College GameDay Built by The Home Depot is adding longtime commentator and producer ‘Stanford Steve’ Coughlin for the 2023 college football season. Joining the show full-time on the road, Coughlin will offer his perspective on college football’s most important weekly storylines and matchups. Coughlin will also lean into his sports betting expertise with ‘Steve’s 6-Pack’ – a segment where he’ll share his top bets of the week. He will also join College Football Live every Friday from the site of College GameDay.

Coughlin joins host Rece Davis and analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and Pat McAfee, along with college football insider Pete Thamel and reporters Jen Lada and Jess Sims during the program’s 37th season.

“Anyone who has met Stanford Steve knows how passionate he is about college football. Adding him to College GameDay will be a great fit as we tap into both his knowledge of the sport and his betting expertise every week to serve all of our loyal fans,” said Lee Fitting, ESPN senior vice president, production.

“Thinking back, getting up early and watching College GameDay during my playing days at Stanford was part of the routine,” said Coughlin, who played tight end for the Cardinals from 1996-2000. “I’m jacked up to be part of this crew. Charlotte, let’s bring it Week 1!”

A longtime ESPNer, Coughlin is best known for his SportsCenter commentator and segment producer role on the midnight edition with Scott Van Pelt, which features their popular “Bad Beats” segment. Coughlin also appears as a sports betting analyst on the daily ESPN sports betting program Daily Wager and is an ESPN.com columnist.

Prior to SportsCenter, Coughlin was part of ESPN Radio for 11 years. He began his ESPN career as a production assistant in 2004 and eventually started working with Van Pelt and Ryen Russillo on their ESPN Radio show in 2009.

Coughlin grew up in Ansonia, Conn., and attended Stanford University where he was a tight end on the football team.

College GameDay returns for the 2023 season with a two-hour preview show on August 26 (10 a.m. ET, ESPN). The team then hits the road for its Week 1 stop in Charlotte, N.C., (9 a.m., ESPN) ahead of the ‘Battle of the Carolinas’ primetime matchup between South Carolina and North Carolina (7:30 p.m., ABC).

Additional details on College GameDay’s plans for the upcoming season will be announced later this month.

I joined ESPN in 2022 as a member of the communications department working on college sports. My passion for college sports came at an early age in a divided household (Big Ten Conference-divided, that is) and followed that to the University of Wisconsin-Madison (sorry, Dad). Four years in the Athletic Communications Department, along with internships with the Big Ten Conference, Big Ten Network and NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, cemented my career path. After spending some time in sports media PR in San Francisco, I’ve spent five-plus years focused in golf, with stints at the American Junior Golf Association, Augusta National and Buffalo Agency, working with the USGA, Youth on Course and Destination Kohler, among others. Despite being a proud Wisconsin native, I’ll forever betray my home state as a lifelong Chicago sports fan. My dog Rizzo knows there’s always next year and wishes his namesake would return home to the North Side.
