Cherokee
Cherokee County, which was established in 1836, is named in honor of the Indian Nation that controlled the area until the 1835 Treaty of New Echota. During the Civil War, the county was a center of iron manufacturing and the Cornwall Furnace in Cedar Bluff is a relic of that industry. A museum with exhibits and interactive displays about the county’s history is in Centre, the county seat. The area is also home to Little River Canyon, one of the most extensive canyon and gorge systems in the nation.
