Inherited from Middle French, Old French besoing; can be seen as a masculine variant of besogne, from Old French besonge, from Old Frankish *bisunnija, from *sunnijōn (to look after) (whence soigner), possibly through a Vulgar Latin intermediate *bisonium. Compare Italian bisogno.
