Etymology

edit

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 깃브다 (Yale: kìs-pù-tá).

Originally Middle Korean 기ᇧ다〮 (Yale: kìsk-tá, “to rejoice”) + (Yale: -pù-, adjective-deriving suffix), hence literally "rejoiceful; rejoice-worthy", but the original verb is obsolete and the word is now perceived as monomorphemic. 기껍다 (gikkeopda) is from the same etymon.
