Born into athe well-off [[Northern England|northern English]] landowning [[Sykes family of Sledmere|family]], he was the second son of the diplomat [[Mark Sykes|Sir Mark Sykes]] (1879–1919), and his wife, Edith (née Gorst). His sister was [[Angela Sykes]], the sculptor.
