This course critically examines the nature, role, and significance of new communication technologies in contemporary (largely) U.S. culture. It considers the relationship between these technologies and popular conceptions of work, leisure, art, knowledge, identity, and environment and thus provides a foundation for understanding the nature, role, and significance of new communication technologies as a dynamic factor in society. Students will be editing (or creating) entries on some of the authors whose work we read as well as articles related to course topics.

Assignment - Signing up and getting started

By January 11 (11:59 pm) everyone should have a Wikipedia account and complete this first training module. Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you. (Because of Wikipedia's technical restraints, you may receive a message that you cannot create an account. To resolve this, please try again using a different internet connection or the next day.)

Assignment - Evaluate an article and finding your article

I recommend starting the evaluation and switching articles if it turns out you cannot find much to add/edit. IF YOU ARE ELECTING TO CREATE A NEW ARTICLE: evaluate an article that is similar to the one you are creating (i.e. an biographical article if you are writing about a person, or an article about a similar topic).

[[../../../training/students/choose-topic-from-list-exercise|You can either Choose your topic / Find your sources from a list your instructor has prepared for you or you can choose your own subject by going through the exercise and training above.]]

Assignment - Everyone continues writing

Now's the time to build up your draft and refine your work. Go back to the evaluation you did in Week 4 and figure out all the things you plan on editing, adding, expanding, and reorganizing about the article you have assigned yourself. Your credit this week is based on you having made additional progress on your article from the previous week.

These will be made available to your classmates for peer-review. Once your draft is ready for review put: DRAFT READY FOR REVIEW at the top of your sandbox

Week 12

Course meetings
Tuesday, 5 April 2022   |   Thursday, 7 April 2022
Assignment - Respond to your peer review

You now have some feedback from your classmate and and instructor. Consider their suggestions, decide what edits you can make now (and make those changes) and what you need time to accomplish (but that in the talk page of your sandbox).

Resources:

  • Editing Wikipedia, pages 12 and 14
  • Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have any questions.
Assignment - Polish your work

Make the changes your peer/I have suggested and begin to finalize your edits/content. Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Review training modules as needed. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!

Week 13

Course meetings
Tuesday, 12 April 2022   |   Thursday, 14 April 2022
Assignment - Begin moving your work to Wikipedia

Move your work out of Wikipedia, following along with the training as you go. If you create a new page be sure to copy your work into a new sandbox as well, and delete the talk page content for the LIVE page you have published.

Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace."

Assignment - Finalize and respond to wiki-editors comments

It's the final chance to develop your article before final grading

  • Read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.
  • Don't forget that you can ask for help from your Wikipedia Expert at any time!
  • Check the live wikipedia edits you made and see if anyone has responded. If they have make the required improvements to the live edits AND the sandbox (what is in the sandbox is what I am grading for the final assignment).
