Finally, a woman who works in category I know something about - I spent many days, years, fishing with grandpa (in freshwater ponds), I eat fish, but I'm no expert on their science. SusunW: I know absolutely nothing about fishing and have never been tempted to stand still for hours on end hoping to catch something. Very little to do on this one. I noticed you capitalized Deputy Director General but not director. I am not sure whether there is any guidance on this but I would not usually capitalize such titles unless they were used to designate an individual, e.g. Director General John Smith. On checking, e.g. Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Biography#Titles_of_people, I see this is also recommended for Wikipedia.--Ipigott (talk) 07:48, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The point of fishing with grandpa is that it was always productive (i.e. pond hopping) and he told stories. I could listen to him for hours. He had this keyring that was a big as his fist (the size of a grapefruit, really huge) that opened every farm field gate in the county. He literally stocked every single pond for miles around in exchange for a key. We always came home with a huge haul because if they weren't biting, we'd just hop to another pond. I was very fortunate, he lived until I was 46, so I got to hear tons of stories and he was a fabulous story teller. Thanks for your help. I appreciate you very much. My grandpa used to tell stories for hours on end too but they were sadly often about his experiences in Flanders in the First World War where he lost a lung from mustard gas and was sent back home. He had an amazing memory for literature and could remember all the details of Dickens' novels, often quoting large chunks verbatim. I remember reading The Pickwick Papers when I was ten or eleven, just to be able to follow what he was talking about. Your fishing experiences seem to have been far more rewarding and you were lucky your grandpa lived so long. Hi, I'm new to Wikipedia and would like to create a new article. I've seen the suggestions that I should make smaller edits first, but for various reasons I would like to go straight to creating a new one. I am a volunteer at the Portuguese nonprofit organisation Batoto Yetu, which has a Portuguese Wikipedia article. I would like my first artcle to be an English version of that. How would I go about this process? Hi there, PrimalBeingToken, and welcome to Wikipedia. In my message on your talk page, you'll find links to guidance on how to edit on the English Wikipedia. I note your interest in translating Batoto Yetu into English but I must first warn you that it is considerably more difficult to create articles in English than in Portuguese. Furthermore, it is not recommended that people closely associated with an organization should create an article about it. Nevertheless, if you really want to go ahead, it is important for your article to be based on reliable secondary sources, i.e. sources not related to the organization itself. Unfortunately, the Portuguese article is completely unsourced and a translation would not be accepted on the English wiki. As new articles should based on at least three secondary sources, you may be able to put something together on the basis of sources such as "The African roots of fado and “Preta Fernanda”: the stories of Africa in Lisbon discovered by Batoto Yetu", Highlighting African communities in Lisbon and "Lisbon (finally) inaugurated street signs that tell its African history". In any case, I suggest you start with a fairly short well-sourced article, presenting the essentials. Once it has been found acceptable, it can always be expanded. You'll find more guidance at Help:Your first article. If you decide to proceed along these lines, please let me know when you think you have created an acceptable first draft and I'll provide feedback. It is getting harder to find people in the chain that meet GNG source requirements for sure. When I started on her, the only 2 things I could find were the AFWST report and the list of members of the academy of science. Days of searching her name finally changed the algorithms enough that I could scrape together sufficient material for an article. That marriage record, which confirmed her maiden name in the Cambridge records, was totally a lucky find. I genuinely appreciate your help. Newpagesfeed[edit]

I am a little confused about my contributions to Wikipedia. I contribute mostly to NewPagesFeed. Now, whatever article comes in Newpagesfeed, I try to improve that article. But many times those articles are created by sockpuppets, so when Checkuser investigates, they also doubt on me. What should be the solution for this? Is there any problem for me with this? Query re process[edit]

Dear Ipigott, A query! Right from when I started drafting new pages, I have checked them with you to make sure they are good enough and you have kindly moved them to main space for me and done wiki data and all sorts to complete the process. I understand from hanging around the Tea Room that another way is to submit an article for consideration but it seems, as there are few admin checkers, that that process can take months to complete. You and another very experienced editor have encouraged me to move drafts to mainspace myself when I figure they are good enough. SO my query is this... if I do this, who checks to make sure the page is up to scratch? Are there new page patrolling admin editors? Do I have to contact them? Is it safer for biographies of marginalised people to be shepherded through by someone such as yourself who belongs to WiR or WiGreen or...? Are there any help pages on this? OK, that was a nice little rabbit hole to fall into: the answer to the missing 2023 award turns out to be that they've changed their system, so the 2022 award was made in 2023, but in 2024 they made the 2024 award - reported so in several sources! I've added a note to clarify.

Updating the table perfectly took several steps, as this was a year of two recipients, only one of whom had a credit for the "Associated Media House" column, but by taking it a step at a time, and copying the format of existing examples, I got there. (I don't do a lot with tables but enjoy the challenge of getting them right.) PamD 19:36, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I now notice it's a "Featured list", so it's disappointing that no-one had noticed the careless update for 2022. The list would also probably be better if individual recipients appeared on their own lines (with the date spanning the two or more lines), so that the list could be sorted on the surnames of all recipients, not just the first-named for each year. W.editor.a1: The link certainly works and much of the biography is quite well presented; but as you've run into copyright violations before, you need to be careful not to raise further problems. According to this analysis, the section on Shows is taken almost without modification from here, which in any case is too closely related to the subject. I suggest you rewrite the section, selecting a few key exhibitions rather than presenting a long list. If you wish, you can include the Peter Geschind source under External links. The other problem is that several paragraphs have no citations. It's important to include at least one reference in each paragraph, preferably at the end of the paragraph. I'm surprised you did not draw ofn this site which looks very reliable and contains many useful details. Geriatricians[edit]

assuming no one is in multiple nationalities, which I suspect we have at least one or two who are, there are 66 articles in the geriatricians tree. With that size I think we should eliminated all the categories. I think we should establish a bare minimum size at which we will split by nationality an occupation. Specifically an occupation that is a tertiary sub-cat of scientists. Johnpacklambert: I am no expert on categories but I see that geriatrics is a rapidly growing profession. In the United States alone, I see from here there are today some 7,300 practicing geriatricians. As the article is mainly devoted to various listings rather than descriptive text, I thought List would be more appropriate than Stub. If you look through Category:List-Class Women's sport articles you will see that a considerable number of tournaments are also classed as lists. I have nevertheless looked into quite a number of cricket tournament articles and have not found any others classed as List. I have therefore changed the class to Stub and will try to remember to avoid List on other articles about cricket tournaments. If you come across inappropriate classes, you are of course always free to change them yourself. But please let me know if you encounter any other cases where you think I have chosen the wrong class. Maybe you can use the sources already mentioned, just making sure that no paragraphs are without a citation. In general, it's a good idea to make sure there's a citation at the end of each paragraph. @Jacob0790:: I've looked carefully at the article. For a living person, the sources are not strong as they nearly all seem to be related to her involvement with Forbes (which is not considered reliable). The award for her company CTI seems useful but it dates back to 2010 and only appears without comment in a list. Perhaps you can find supporting coverage in the press. Overall you really need to find reliable independent sources in accordance with the advice in the WiR primer. The article also comes over as promotional. Let me know if you are able to improve on sourcing and I'll take another look. On the other hand, I really enjoyed reading your recent Joy (dog) which I've promoted to B class. Unfortunately, when someone writes an article about a living person, it's obvious it's because this individual has made notable contributions in a certain field. Help with Translation/Deciding the name of the article[edit]

Hello @Ipigott! I have found your name in WikiProject Intertranswiki/Spanish. I was wondering if you could help me decide how to properly name this article: Draft:Hispaniola (battalion). The unit calls themselves "Эспаньола" which directly translates to Hispaniola, but I think that maybe its more proper to call it in a transliterated way "Espaniola" or just simply "Española"? SusunW: Discovered this after an 11-hour road trip from Luxembourg to Denmark -- so I might not be as attentive as usual. The name Tugendhat has always intrigued me, no doubt because while I was working at the European Commission, Christopher Tugendhat was a ritish Commissioner for a few years. In articles like this, I am faced with the difficulty of distinguishing between "history of art" as a topic deserving attention and "art history" as an subject taught in universities. I've more or less left things as they are but thought I should draw it to your attention. As I have had close associations with culture in both Austria and Czechia, I found the article really interesting. Not much to do in copy-editing though (except perhaps for eminent!). I looked at the sources and saw she was "Austrian" but that her family were Czech and ended up in Venezuela, and I knew I had to know more. (We have dear friends from here, wife is Czech/husband Mexican, who moved to a village near Prague. Beautiful country.) Yes, the sources say art history, but it seemed to me that she is looking for historical clues in art for what they depict about the social and political status and perspectives of women. One of the things I find fascinating about women's studies is how it encompasses so many fields. Glad you arrived safely. I wonder if your British politician is related to her, seems likely. It just seems like there is a verb or punctuation missing in English, i.e. Villa is a Box of Troubles or Villa, Box of Troubles. I get that headlines are often not grammatical, but nonetheless, it makes it difficult to translate. SusunW (talk) 16:05, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is meant as a name (though invented by the journalist) in the context. Although the actual name is "Villa Tugendhat", he uses "Villa Kummerkasten" in the title. The word "Kummerkasten" literally means "box of sorrows" and is the standard word for a suggestion box (where you can make anonymous complaints). Something starting with "Villa Ku..." immediately brings up the thought of "Villa Kunterbunt", the German name of Villa Villekulla and an extremely popular name for buildings in Germany. Anyway, the journalist just wants to make a point that there is trouble with this box-shaped villa, so he calls it "Trouble Box Villa" (it might be better to put the "villa" after the name). The first of two. I'm about to start on her long-term partner's article as well. (Weird dilemma, one of them was out, one of them was never out, so I did not address the relationship.) I am totally confused about what kind of English to use for an Australian who lived most of her life in Canada and was educated in the US. I started to change it to BE, but then noted that all the Canadian articles use "realize", so then I was unsure. If you could give it a copyedit, that would be fabulous. If not, no worries. Indeed. Immigrant women fascinate me, perhaps because I am one? The other thing that excited me was that they lived in Haile Selassie's palace. I wrote my "aunt" to see if she knew them (perhaps she has photos???!). My mom's best friend from childhood (not her actual sister, but as neither of them had an actual sister, they claimed each other) was Selassie's children and grandchildren's music teacher. She used to regale us with stories when she came to visit about lions and monkeys that he gave her for pets. She lived there from 1957 or 1958 until the 1970s, when she moved to Korea. SusunW: I didn't realize you had personal connections. Makes everything more interesting. I suppose I'm something of an emigrant/immigrant too although apart from once being a "landed immigrant" in Canada, I've never really thought of myself in those terms. Wherever I've lived, I've always remained British and used my British passport. I used to travel so much in connection with my work that I no longer feel the urge to make any more long trips. It must be about 15 years since I was last on a plane. Everything's by car nowadays. That's why writing is so fascinating. One never knows, or at least I don't, until the subject has already been chosen and research begins that there is a connection. I remember writing about Matsuoko and recognizing things in her attitude I share. In writing Gillett, when I read that she was in the palace, I double checked the dates and went WOW! The world is truly an amazing and wondrous place, and much, much smaller than we think. I use my US passport, but definitely have my green card (it is truly green) here. I think I shall never lose my lust for travel. Aunt Lou just turned 91 and is still traveling the world, but moved back to the states about 10 years ago. I found it so funny that she thought the feminists in Mexico City were so radical, in one interview she talks about them misbehaving, and I choked on my coffee. Sorry- My mistake. I must have been confused by the two biographies being condensed into one. But it's difficult to see how they could have been separated. On taking things for granted, I became very much aware of the terrible treatment the Japanese suffered in WW II internment camps through Japanese contacts in Canada. Ricco Baroni: Sources in other languages are acceptable but I know many reviewers call for sources in English as they can check them more easily. It's good to hear you are aiming for C class. The vast majority of biographies of sports people are stubs, although they frequently contain tables of achievements. It would be good if you could include more women. @Ipigott@Ricco Baroni If you're adding non-English-language sources, it's a courtesy to the reader to add the "trans-title=" field to the reference, and give an English translation of the title. That way readers who don't understand the source language can at least see what the title was. Unfortunately it's not one of the fields which shows up automatically in "Ref Toolbar", I don't know about other editing tools, but I think it's worth adding. Thanks. I see from the similar article Empress regnant that the Wikidata entry is based on the item WEJ FEBR Work which you will find in the LH column. If you click on this, you will find a basis for adding the information required. I see however that the article has already been connected to Wikidata under Empress regnant of Japan (Q5374675). Thank you so much, Balance person. Yes, you are right; these changes have been particularly unnerving for those of us who have tried to maintain and improve the project over the years. Unfortunately there appears to be a strong group of "technicians" who are interested more in the mechanics of the system rather than in how to achieve results. Women in Red first received attention as it was unwilling to fall in line with the way other wikiprojects were adapting to technical developments, especially in connection with displaying pertinent meetup details on article talk pages. One editor in particular therefore decided to introduce changes which were beyond our ability to monitor and as far as I can see is now the only person able to make changes. I am not completely abandoning Women in Red but for the time being I will be spending most of my editing time on other developments which I think deserve attention. As a result I will not be creating any more articles about women. But please let me know if you would like me to look through any of your interesting new creations or if you need help with anything else. Article rating[edit]

Please explain how you think that an article making large scale use of unreliable sources can be rated as "B"-class as you did here and after being challenged repeated. The article cites forums, as well as Navipedia, which has been discussed on RSN Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_390#Navypedia.org. Sourcing is vital to Wikipedia, and we shouldn't be pretending that inadequate sources are acceptable.Nigel Ish (talk) 17:48, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, Nigel Ish, and thank you so much for alerting me here about the use of unreliable sources in support of certain details in the article Italian destroyer Granatiere (1906). I fully agree that sources such as Navipedia should not be accepted as reliable. My re-establishment of B class was accidental and based on its appearance in another list. It was however influenced by an ORES assessment of GA class and a Rater assessment of B or higher. These tools do not usually suggest such high ratings if unreliable sources have been used. I have now re-established the former rating of C-class. You may be interested to know that this is one of a number of articles about Italian ships which have recently been translated from the Italian wiki. They include Italian destroyer Rosolino Pilo (minor details sourced by Navipedia now deleted), Italian destroyer Francesco Nullo (1914), Italian destroyer Audace (1913) and Italian destroyer Animoso (1913). It appears to me these articles are reliably sourced but as an expert on ships you might like to double check. You might be interested to know that one of the problems I constantly encounter in rating articles about warships is that the Military History bot almost always rates articles as C class even if they are more highly rated by ORES or Rater. You should not capitalize people's job titles unless a title is used in connection with a name, e.g. Director General Jane Roe (see here). In answer to your question, new articles are listed in New pages for review where most of them are picked up within a few days although there can be much more lengthy delays. There is however always a risk that a reviewer may find an article is not yet suitable for mainpage and will tag it for attention, return it to draft status or even nominate it for deletion. Nevertheless, as your articles are always well sourced, I don't think there is much of a risk for you. Only after successfully creating a considerable number of articles can editors be awarded the status of autopatrolled which allows them to have their articles accepted without going through New Page Patrol. @Michael G. Lind:: I've looked carefully through your recent changes to Castlereagh-Canning duel and while they generally seem useful, I needed to make a number of copy-edits. I restored the American spelling as changes to British English would require more comprehensive work including phraseology, date structures, etc. Use of the curly apostrophe is not permitted on Wikipedia. As for GA, anyone is able to nominate an article but I'm not sure you have sufficient experience to undertake the changes likely to be requested. If you are really interested, the first step would be to request a peer review but I suggest you first try to gain more experience of editing on the English Wikipedia, perhaps also creating a few articles. If you don't find this kind of assistance has been helpful then as I suggested earlier you should consider requesting a peer review. What I need is encouragement, not “Oh, little fool, you are not up to it. I doubt you can do anything better than a stub.” Be friendly &, encourage others /newbies, help them when they need it, this is what Wikipedia should be about. What did you in your job? Running from June 1 to 30, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Going Back in Time! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 20 centuries by month's end. Olga Medvedkov[edit]

I've spent the last month doing a peer review on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which I am hoping is moving toward FA. Very challenging for me to mentor someone, but I've managed. In the interim of waiting for responses from the main editor, I've put together and article on Medvedkov, the next link in my chain. Good question. They should be the same, so I've changed both to actress. In the debates about gendered occupations, for the most part women who act in the US have advocated for actor because they want their work to be recognized as equal to that of any man who acts. On the other hand, women who fly absolutely abhor being called aviators and prefer aviatrix. I got several e-mails from the Ninety-Nines when the whole category debate was ongoing expressing their displeasure. The organization helped Sue and I a lot when we were writing Women in aviation. From their perspective, they had to work far harder than any man to become pilots and they claimed the word "aviatrix" to represent that struggle. We lost that debate. Advice on translation strategy please![edit]

Hi there Ian, I'm a medical researcher and on-and-off WP editor. I spent a big chunk of time in 2023/4 trying to get the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis page up to GA status and I'm pleased to say that (in English) we managed to reach our goal (see presentation here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0p8Ou_BCJ0&list=PLbiBIrPZvTbcOuJdXQiOhh7aCE6RGOOM2&index=4). However, there are now 67 language translations! Unfortunately the length, quality, and accuracy of the other articles is now woefully lacking. Languages like Spanish, French, and German cumulatively get 1 million views a year, about the same as the English article. Issues range from inaccurate or out of date information, to very brief articles or downright harmful information about things that don't work. I've been scratching my head about how to tackle this problem - e.g. i.) individually tagging volunteer translator's talk pages and asking for help, ii.) getting a grant and paying a project manager and professional translators to take a crack at it, iii.) sitting down with ALS researchers in a 2-hour real-time Zoom call and walking through the machine translation tool in a screenshare, iv.) doing something clever with ChatGPT4o? Any of these approaches are only temporary patches, as the field moves on (e.g. several drugs have been approved recently, though one of them was just shelved again). Thanks for getting in touch, PaulWicks. I may be something of an expert in translation but have little competence in the medical sphere. I can understand your frustration in discovering serious inaccuracies in articles covering ALS in other language versions of Wikipedia. I don't think there are any easy solutions but a first step may be to address the problem on pertinent English-language talk pages such as the ALS talk page itself and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Medicine. You could also look into who has been working on updates to the article in other language versions and try to contact some of the most active contributors directly. But I think the most important thing is to make sure the English versions of this and related articles and properly maintained. Although I am fluent in several languages, I concentrate on improvements to the English Wikipedia as it is widely used by those who first turn up related articles in other languages. If anyone is interested in using machine translation to improve articles in other languages, I would recommend DeepL which in my opinion is considerably better than others such as Google translate. Thank you! Yes I've been pondering whether there is some forthcoming high level strategy in the works that would automate more of this or make it in any way more appealing to do all the translation work. I've pulled the user view statistics for top 10 countries in the last 30 days:

English: 85k

French: 18k

Spanish: 17k

German: 19k

Italian: 8k

Chinese: 9k

Japanese: 7k

Russian: 18k

Portugese: 3k

Arabic: 3k

By comparison, the British MND Association once sent me an email saying they'd made contact with about 5k members in a year via email, telephone, leaflets, etc., so these numbers still look high to me. There may be sociocultural reasons why people might like to access their pages in different languages, but for example the Russian article is only 1k words in length (vs 8.5k for English) and hasn't been edited since last June. @Dencoolast33: It's certainly well up to B class standard. The problem was simply that MilHistBot generally assigns a preliminary C class even if an article is well presented and well referenced. I have also given a B rating to Seskarö Uprising and Swedish soldiers in the Congo Free State. So I finished the next link in the chain. I am a bit perplexed as to what to call the movie she was in. Usually titles of works are consistently translated by machine technology within the same article, but in this case, both the Welt article and the Süddeutsche Zeitung article translate Die Unbeugsameng differently throughout the article each time the film is mentioned, including The Unbendable, The Unyielding, The Unbreakable, The Indomitable. Challenge to question of notability[edit]

Hi Ipigott. I really like the edits you made to the article on Bonnie Rychlak. I continued work on it, and took your suggestion to tone down the promotional tone. However, I see that a certain editor who seems to have had a bee in his bonnet from the first draft on the artist has come back to challenge the notability of the subject. I don't understand his problem. Everything in this article supports the subject's notability, not the least of which is the fact that she is mentioned on no less than five other Wikipedia pages. I don't find his comments helpful nor on target. I've read the criteria for notability several times, and this more than meets those criteria. The page is well sourced and the subject's notability has been established in TWO fields. This feels a lot like macho posturing to me. I would very much appreciate your intercession in this matter. Gaw54: I see the tag has been added by Theroadislong, a highly experienced editor, who has based it specifically on notability of an artist. In view of the coverage of her artistic work cited both in the body of the article and in the works listed under "Further reading", I believe she meets the requirements of WP:Artist. Furthermore, she appears to be notable as a writer and I have now added relevant categories. One way of establishing notability more firmly would be to include the names of recognized permanent collections in which her work is included. In connection with her writing, it would be useful to include one or two published critical assessments of her written works. I believe some of these can be found under the links to the article from other Wikipedia articles. A section specifically on "Critical assessment" would certainly help in this connection and would enhance the overall quality of the article. I agree with you that the independent sources you have cited already attest to the subject's general notability under Wikipedia:GNG. I therefore think it would be useful for Theroadislong to examine the article in more detail. I do not want to create difficulties by deleting the tag myself as I have already demonstrated my acceptance of notability by promoting the article to mainspace.
