== About the CAPTCHAs ==

Can you remove the CAPTCHAs when we create an account? Yes, they are great against automatic account creation, but can you remove them because some people, or Wikipedians, can see black and couldn't try to see those CAPTCHAs? Diffs

Thanks brion. The things you said to change to get the old version worked. I guess that means now every time you update the diffs for now on, I have to keep copying and pasting the new code and changing it again? Wikitech

Hello Brion, I already tried to reach you by email but it seems that it didn't work. Could you create a wikitech account for me to make the watchlist-function possible? It would be great because it is a way for me to keep the server list up to date. Thank you. Christian NurtschTM 16:34, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We've now had a successful import to wikia, so the wiki site can be locked. There are issues with the import and so it is desirable to leave the site in a read only mode, so that we can copy pages. Many thanks. Jonathan Webley 08:23, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

$wgImageMapAllowExternalLinks

Is $wgImageMapAllowExternalLinks false here, or am I just seriously messing up? I am trying to convert the clickable images on my userpage from {{click}} to the imagemap format, but I can't figure out how to make the image link to mailto:<myemail> and the external editcounter on the toolserver. Unless I am making some sort of mistake, it seems $wgImageMapAllowExternalLinks is set to false. If so, may I ask why? Since I have hacked in an external linking image already through {{click}}, it doesn't seem to have any security advantage, and I can't think of anything else. Could you shed some light on this? Thanks, Prodego talk 18:52, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AFAIK the default is off, and it's newish. --brion 20:37, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

bureaucrat and admin rights

Hello. Could you be so kind please and tell me if it is technically possible to set rigths for user that he will be bureaucrat and not admin? For some politically reasons I like to have removed my admin rights and keep my bureaucrat rights on slovak wikipedia. I mean something like

UPDATE user_rights SET ur_rights=replace(ur_rights, "sysop", "") WHERE ur_user=id(Liso);

I hope that it will not make problems in php code.

Thanx for answer! --Liso 17:54, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I will approve this request in my sk.wiki page when you say me it is possible and you could make it for me. I asked stewards on meta, but I got negative answer. I think they have not tools to make it, but probably you could change user_rights table directly. Thanx again! :) --Liso 18:04, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I believe the stewards can do it, but they are not willing to. It is pointless to do so anyway, since the account can grant itself sysop rights, why not give them to it? Also Brion, I was wondering if I could get a reply to my request above. Thanks, Prodego talk 01:09, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
1) Steward issue. 2) No point to it. 3) There is no obligation to constantly use admin powers. --brion 17:55, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Usergroup

Hey, I am wondering whether you (as a developer) could comment on this bot discussion. The request may require another usergroup, specifically for editing protected pages, which I know is a minor change to LocalSettings.php, however as far as I am aware, it requires a server admin or dev to change.

I am posting this message to many developers talk pages, who are part of the developer group here on enwiki.

Image copyright problem with Image:Temp-stylesheet-demo.html

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Temp-stylesheet-demo.html. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Papa November 1 18:54, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Temp-stylesheet-demo.html. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 18:54, 29 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Papa November 1 18:54, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actively loading GFDL non-compliant mirror

FYI, http://www.lardydar.com/search/wiki/, is actively loading Wikipedia content, removing "Wikipedia", replacing it with "Lardydar Wiki". To do this they need to link back to Wikipedia, which they are not doing, not to mention the rudeness of actively loading from Wikipedia's servers. Anyway, 1 week ago I sent them what was basically a nice "cease and desist" email, telling them how to mirror correctly, ect. Anyway I have gotten no response, and am letting you know so you can block them if you wish. Their IP is probably 69.16.196.38. Depending on what you decide I will write them another email. Question about Category development work

Hey Brion, I had a quick question about what's going on with development on the category side of things, since I can't seem to put together much of a picture on BugZilla and thought you might have a better idea.

While I didn't place these myself (others had already done so) - I have two main interests: one, seeing categories display histories of which articles are added and removed from the categories. This would also have the effect of ending a lot of the category vs. list material that seems to continually pop up and become difficult to maintain a peace on. Two, dynamic intersection categories, allowing a user to find all articles which are in both (or several) selected categories. This would also vastly improve searchability and prevent some obscure categorization structures (or edit wars regarding them).

Anyway, I understand if these aren't your particular interests, but if you could even give me some linkage to on-going discussion on these proposals, I'd be very grateful. Thanks! Girolamo Savonarola 03:06, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know no work is being done of this sort. :) It's somewhat tricky to do a history of category insertions/deletions since it may be done dynamically (eg through changing templates) and the update of the tables may happen in the background or at irregular times. In theory a history could be maintained, though, if you hooked it up just right. --brion 15:20, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bug 9862

I am writing in support of the enhancement for "Separate group for ipblock-exempt on en.wikipedia" (bugzilla:9862.) I must confess I don't understand why this is delayed, and I know a number of very helpful editors eagerly await its implementation. I hope that this message will somehow speed that completion. Thank you. ←BenB4 04:56, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not really fiddling with blocking stuff at the moment; unsure what it'd entail. I can put it on my list though. --brion 15:21, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you block me at the incubator?

Hi there - I'm Bennyboyz3000 on the incubator too - could you please explain why you blocked me or unblock and restore the perfectly good project you killed? I think it must be a case of mistaken identity - The pages I created were perfectly good and I never made nonsense edits - perhaps a vandal got to it and you figured all edits were of that caliber? I sincerely do hope you can sort this out soon. Cheers --Benspeak 23:06, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You seriously need to read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, I think. :) --brion 18:33, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Editpage.php - an idea from a nobody... :)

Dear Sir, I am writing to you following some problems I had with Mediawiki Extended Toolbar, and trying to get it to work on my Wiki which I am building at home. Despite having the correct Common.js and css files, and a live internet connection, and a java environment installed, I could not get this to work. I fiddled with the code of Editpage.php, clearly marking where I had altered from, and why, and posted on the mediawiki site with notes for anyone interested. I left a note for Tim Starling, who has not replied, and I was wondering when you get time whether you could review the code and let me know your thoughts. Basically, what I have done is hard coded the extra buttons into the php, and tested it cross browser and cross platform, and had it successfully working on several browsers not mentioned as it being suitable for.

The code is available, along with my notes at mw:User:Tmalmjursson/Coding_Subpage.

Thanks for your help. I thought I would pass this to the developers to see what they thought of the code and whether it would be useful for future projects. Regards, and thanks for the great software! Thor Malmjursson 12:52, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

French Special:CrossNamespaceLinks

Hi, do you know why fr:Special:CrossNamespaceLinks have been disabled ? Is it temporary ? Akkeron 11:37, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It does not appear to have been disabled at all. It's cached and the last update was two days ago. --brion 13:09, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know for the cache, the message say it is actually disabled ("Les mises à jour pour cette page sont actuellement désactivées") and it was not here before the last update which was little special (faster than usual and alone (no update on shortpages)). If the updates are not disabled, there is a problem with the message, off course I can wait a week to see if it is realy disabled. Scottish English

Wikipedia:WikiProject Scotland wants to use {{User en-sc}} for Scottish English, and I have suggested they follow ISO code to use {{User en-gb-sct}} instead and allow en-sc instead for Seychellois English, per the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 having "sc" Seychelles and ISO 3166-1:GB#BS-only codes having "gb-sct" as Scotland, just like ISO 3166-1:US having "us-ca" for California and {{User en-us-ca}} for California English. Squid bug

Hi Brion,

Is the squid issue (crumbling under the 1px-gif pngfix) still being looked at? We have the script running again and greatly optimized it's code (without the 1px-gif of course); it is hardly any slower then the old version using the gif. However, imagemaps remain a problem. I would like to know if it is at least possible to use the 1px-gif only in case of an imagemap. (The code would look like this.) There shouldn't be many of those; less the 1% of all images I guess. Please let us know on Mediawiki_talk:Common.js. Thank you. EdokterTalk 23:12, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know we haven't had a chance to look too much further into the root bug (but we're hoping to get that part of Squid rewritten soon, as it's awful ;). Offhand I'd say it's probably ok to go back to using the 1px hack for imagemaps; if it blows up again we'll take it out again. :) --brion 14:24, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll put it in... Let us know if anything blows up. EdokterTalk 14:43, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anonymous page creation

Hi Brion, it seems word on street is that page creation by unregistered users will be re-enabled on November 9. Only problem with this is that it appears this decision does not have community consensus, and was presented to the community this week (Friday) as a decision already finalized (by Gregory Maxwell). I am not aware of any precedent where a non-board member can finalize such an important decision without community discussion (and not just on the listserv). Since I assume you are the person who will actually be flipping the switch, I would like to ask you to wait until this issue has actually been discussed and a decision is made by the community at large rather than just by Gregory Maxwell and friends. Kaldari 15:16, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
