Where did the name Steely Dan come from?

The name of a dildo in William Burroughs' Naked Lunch

Would someone take a moment to clarify a point of abiding mystification to me: why would someone's religious background--apparently having NO possible bearing on their lifestyle, worldview, etc., today--be among the first issues mentioned in an article about a Jazz musician?

That is: how can it POSSIBLY be relevant to the article that Fagan's dad was Jewish? If, for example, he were, say, a Catholic--or Baptist, or Methodist, or agnostic, etc.--would it have been deemed relevant too?

This is a pervasive--and utterly ludicrous--trait of Wiki: if there exists a relative who may have HAPPENED to be Jewish--no matter how remote or of little-to-no significance the point is to the subject of the article--it appears at the outset. NEVER, though, does one recall even ONE casual mention of a subject's father being ANY of the aforementioned alternative traditions.

By the same token, if it were the case that the parent of a Wiki article subject--even a parent whose name is never mentioned again as being of ANY consequence to the subject of the article (as in THIS case) known to have been born and raised in the US--had been a devotee of, say, Zen Buddhism, or Taoism, that MIGHT have been noteworthy if only for the unusual religio-cultural choice.

Why the double standard then?

Fagen has said himself that his 3 solo albums should be viewed as a trilogy. This is illustrated, among other clues, by the fact that the last bar of Morph The Cat (the album) is the same as the opening horn line of The Night Fly (I.G.Y song): cycle completed. As my tag indicates, this article has some NPOV issues. Please do not remove the tag without discussion of how cleanup should proceed. I've added some CN tags, but the intro, 'Steely Dan' and 'Solo Career' chapters have what seem to me to be obvious issues. I'll stand by on this and let others proceed. Thanks. So the tag has been on the article for going on three years now, and there have been substantial edits since then. It's been a few years since I last read this article, and upon reading it today I was not particularly struck by anything that seemed of a fan nature. When I went back in history to 2009 I see what the concern was however. If there aren't objections I'm going to remove dis hare tag. Evenrød (talk) 07:25, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

There are still zero references in the 'Steely Dan' and opening four paragraphs of the 'Solo career' sections. There are zero references in the 'Musical style' section. There are still what we call fancruft phrases like "universal acclaim" (for 'Morph the the Cat') that have got to be sourced, tagged or pulled out. The article, in short, has serious issues. Adding any more 'Citation needed' tags will tragically weaken the look of the article; I would propose tagging the sections, perhaps. For a major music star, it is a real shame to have this poor of an article on Wikipedia. I'll give it a few days and check back to see if anyone cared enough to do the work before I take action. Amazon is advertising preorders for an upcoming Fagen album called Sunken Condos. Anybody know if this is legit? Should it be listed in the article? Announced release date is October 16, 2012. Clampton (talk) 07:17, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
