Brunswick Juventus Football Club is an Australian soccer club based in the Melbourne municipality of Moreland, Victoria. The club currently competes in the National Premier Leagues Victoria 2 and is based at CB Smith Reserve in the suburb of Fawkner. The earliest traces of the club date back to 1948 with the founding of Juventus, and was officially founded in 1997 with mergers and de-mergers occurring between Italian backed clubs within the Italian community of Melbourne.

History

Establishment 1948

The club was established by Melbourne's Italian community in 1948 as 'Juventus', named after the Italian club. The decision to name the club Juventus was due to the agreement of political neutrality by the founding members as the club was partly established remnants of several smaller clubs in Melbourne, including Savoia that was founded in the early 1930s, and is believed to have been Victoria's first Italian sporting club. The first competitive match was played on 16 April 1949, being the first round of the Victorian third tier league, that is now the Victorian State League Division 1 as of 2019. Juventus defeated Brighton SC 8-2 away, in what would be the beginning of a thirteen game winning streak that would ultimately help the club finish second and be promoted at the season's conclusion.

Brunswick Juventus became the dominant side in Victoria in the 1950s, winning six titles, including five consecutive titles from 1952 to 1956, and were arguably the club which ushered in the European migrant dominance of Victorian soccer which remains to the present. In the 1960s, while the club remained more than competitive, the rise of other migrant clubs, principally the Greek backed South Melbourne and the Yugoslav backed Footscray JUST, saw this dominance ended and the club waited until 1970 to add to its trophies.

Present

In 2011, the club was crowned Victorian State League Division 1 champions. After being crowned champions, club members decided at the annual general meeting that the club would relocate to the City of Moreland. The club's name was then changed to Moreland Zebras FC and played out of DeChene Reserve in Coburg.

In 2015, the club's seniors moved into the facilities at CB Smith Reserve, while the juniors continued to be based out of DeChene Reserve. The Zebras finished in second place in the NPL 1 West division in 2015 and qualified for a playoff match against Melbourne Victory's NPL team. Despite scoring early, the Zebras lost the game 2–1 and remained in the NPL1 division for 2016, now named NPL2.

After the departure of senior head coach Danny Gnjidic at the end of the 2016 NPL2 West season, in which Moreland finished in 5th place, the Zebras appointed former player Fausto De Amicis as the new manager of the first team.[1] Moreland finished in 2nd place in 2017, five points off promoted Northcote City. In the promotion playoff, the Zebras lost 1–0 to Dandenong City.

For the 2018 season, Juventus signed former A-League players Jake Barker-Daish, Rashid Mahazi and Jakob Williams. The Zebras held second position of the table for extended periods of the 2018 season, but with just one win from their last six games, Moreland were overtaken by both St Albans and North Geelong Warriors in the table, leaving them in 4th place at the end of the 2018 season.

In the 2019 season, Zebras qualified for the final stages of the FFA Cup, beating Victorian top division side Altona Magic in the qualifying rounds. In the Round of 32, Moreland beat fellow Victorian NPL2 qualifiers Bulleen Lions.[2] In the Round of 16, Zebras beat NPL Queensland side Magpies Crusaders 4–0 in front of over 1,300 at CB Smith Reserve and became the first ever third-tier side to qualify for the FFA Cup quarter-finals.[3]

In September 2019, Zebras midfielder Dhour Chol was called up for the South Sudan national team.[4]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 seasons were called off by Football Victoria.

In preparation for the 2022 season, Moreland Zebras Juventus announced the re-appointment of Gianfranco Impellizzeri as the Clubs Senior Men’s Head Coach for Season 2022. Gianfranco joined the club midway through the now-cancelled 2021 season. Gianfranco is no stranger to Moreland Zebras Juventus having played for Brunswick Juventus in the old NSL as well being the Clubs Senior Head Coach in 2010 where he regenerated the entire senior squad which was eventually promoted to Division 1. Over 20 plus years of coaching experience across all levels of competition, Gianfranco has won promotion 6 times which also includes winning promotion for Dandenong Thunder into NPL 1 as recently as 2017.
