Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom is an animated pre-school children's show shown on Nick Jr. Italy and Nick Jr. UK. Ben is a loveable little elf while his best friend Holly is a pretty fairy princess. The show is set in an enchanted magical kingdom with fairies, elves and insects. The show is broadcast across Nickelodeon's 43 international channels throughout Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle-East and Latin America.

The show is produced by Astley Baker Davies, the company responsible for Peppa Pig. Many of the actors who lend their vocal skills to characters in Peppa Pig also work on Ben & Holly. These include John Sparkes, Sarah Ann Kennedy and David Rintoul.

Characters

  • Ben Elf:

Ben is an elf and one of the main characters alongside Holly. His parents are Mr. & Mrs. Elf. He lives in the Great Elf Tree with the Wise Old Elf at the top. Ben has a blue shirt, a blue pair of shorts and blue triangular hat with a leaf sticking out

  • Princess Holly:

Holly is a fairy and one of the main characters alongside Ben. She likes to use magic despite the risk of things going wrong. Her best friend is Ben elf and her parents are King and Queen Thistle. She wears a pink dress and a small crown.

  • King Thistle:

King Thistle is the father of Holly, Daisy and Poppy and is the king of the Kingdom. He is Queen Thistle's husband.

  • Queen Thistle:

Queen Thistle is the mother of Holly, Daisy and Poppy and the wife of King Thistle. She is the queen of the Kingdom.

  • Daisy and Poppy:

Holly's cheeky, baby twin sisters. They're not very good at magic but that doesn't stop them from trying! They are quite cheeky and usualy end up causing trouble with magic. Daisy wears a yellow dress while Poppy wears a red dress.

  • Nanny Plum:

Nanny Plum is Holly's nanny and teacher. She is very good at magic and capable of speaking many animal languages (excluding Mole and Aardvark which she claims to be a bit difficult).She often ends up into all kinds of trouble which she was trying to prevent Holly from getting into.

  • Wise Old Elf:

An elf that lives in the same tree as Ben in room 98. He also is the Wise Old Tailor and librian at times. He also runs the Elf School and Elf factory. He is described to be "wise, old and an elf". He strongly disapproves of magic. His hat contains a maple leaf.

  • Mr Elf:

Mr Elf is the father of Ben. His job is to deliver items to various places such as food to the castle as well as working for the elf farm. Mrs Elf complains he always works too hard.

  • Mrs Elf:

Mrs Elf is the mother of Ben. She has a lilly leaf and flower in her hat.

  • Gaston the Ladybird:

Gaston the Ladybird is a male lady bird who lives in a small cave. He likes "foul smelly food" and likes his house messy. He doesn't mind giving Ben rides when Ben needs to fly. Nanny Plum translates for him quite often. He acts quite similar to a dog.

  • Violet Fairy:

Violet is a fairy who is one of Holly's friends. She wears a violet dress.

  • Strawberry Fairy:

Strawberry is a fairy who is one of Holly's friends. She wears a light green dress.

  • Fleur Fairy:

Fleur is a fairy who is one of Holly's friends. She wears a red dress and a red bow.

  • Barnaby Elf:

Barnaby is an elf who is one of Ben's friends. He wears a brown shirt and brown shorts. He likes to play football. His hat has a wheat leaf in it.

  • Lizzie Elf:

Lizzie is an elf who is one of Ben's friends.

  • King and Queen Marigold:

King and Queen Marigold are relatives of the Thistle royal family. Queen Thistle describes them to be "quite fashionable."

  • Redbeard The Elf Pirate:

Baranaby's pirate uncle. He claims to be a "good" pirate. He is quite polite but sometimes over does it, such as kissing Nanny Plums palm every time he talks to her. He wears a pirate hat.

Geography

At the start of every episode a map is shown and the Wise Old Elf will say "Today's adventure starts at the (Setting of the episode)" At the very centre of the map is The Meadow.Other locations include:

  • Gaston's cave (North West)
  • The Elf Windmill (North East)
  • The Great Elf Tree (East)
  • The Elf Farm (further East)
  • The Frog Pond (South East)
  • The Royal Golf Course (which eventually becomes a crazy golf course) (South West)
  • The Little Castle (West)
  • Mrs Witch's House (further West)

Each area of the trees that surround The Little Kingdom are named as:

  • The Little Forest (North West)
  • Elf Oak Wood (North East)
  • The Pine Forest (South East)
  • The Bramble woods (South West)

Trivia

  • It is not clear where fairies other than the royal family live, as Holly and her family live in the castle and Ben lives in The Great Elf Tree along with all the other elves. It is not explained where other fairies such as Violet and Strawberry live.
  • The language seen in the books that Queen Thistle reads to Holly and her sisters is Lorem Ipsum, which is a dummy text used in the printing industry and based on Latin.
  • In the episode 'Tooth Fairy', the little girl Lucy has a Peppa Pig toy laying on the floor beneath her window
