Astrakhan State University (ASU) founded in 1932 is now known as one of the largest versatile educational establishments in the Caspian Region.

The functions of our University include not only training experts and fundamental researchers, but also sharing new technologies with industry and business.

The structure of Astrakhan University includes 5 Innovative Institutions (Institution of Economics and Law, Institution of Natural Sciences, Institution of Humanities, Institution of Physics and Mathematics, Institution of Pedagogics, Psychology, and Social Work), 21 Departments, 1 College, 82 Chairs, Znamensk Branch, and an Industrial Practical Facility.

The University trains specialists in more that 100 specializations and courses, among them 12 programs of professional retraining and 23 programs of advanced training, 16 specialties of vocational education (it is possible to advance this education by studying similar programs of higher education – as a rule, within reduced terms).

Our graduates work in governmental, scientific, industrial, agricultural, and educational establishments as well as in mass-media. Currently about 17, 000 students and about 600 post-graduates study at our University.
Astrakhan State University is a member of the Caspian States University Association; it is actively developing its relations with foreign universities. It has partners among Finnish, Italian, Croatian, Hungarian, German, French, Belgian, Chinese, Iranian, Egyptian, Uzbek, and American Universities. We perform the following programs in close cooperation with our foreign partners: short-term language courses, student exchanges, joint scientific and innovative projects, combined academic courses for students, and international conferences.

Our University has its own Department of International Relations that includes the Russian-American Center of Education & Research, the Center of International Education, the Tempus Programs Center (currently we develop 6 combined educational programs with our French, Belgian, Finnish, British, and German partners), and the Casa Caspian Nova (Russian-French Center of Combined Educational Programs and Researches).
In 2007 we signed agreements on “double diplomas” for combined Master programs that we execute jointly with L'Universitй de Nice-Sophia Antipolis (France) and with Clark University (USA, Massachusetts).


Our University lectures teach students from Iran, Korea, Italy, France, Turkey, Syria, Morocco, Congo, etc. Some of our programs have been valued according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

The Administration of Astrakhan University strive for forming a multi-language educational environment where the training of competitive specialists includes everyone’s studying 1 or 2 foreign languages throughout the whole period of their studies, so that our graduates might use their knowledge of foreign languages in their future career.



Nowadays Astrakhan State University is one of Eastern Europe’s most dynamically growing innovative universities. Its current activities put academic traditions and modern technologies together.
