The Fujairah incident resulted in damage to four commercial ships, including two Saudi Arabian oil tankers, near the port of Fujairah in the Gulf of Oman, near Persian Gulf, on about 6 AM, on 12 May 2019.[2][3][4] The foreign affairs ministry of the United Arab Emirates reported that the ships were subject to a "sabotage attack", but did not elaborate on who was responsible or how the sabotage took place.[5][4] Pictures showed that the explosion caused serious damage to ships. Also, a Norwegian oil tanker that belong to Thome Ship Management company, Andrea Victory, damaged in Fujairah port.[3]

One of the oil ship was planned to transfer Saudi oil to the United States. Saudi Energy Minister, Khalid al-Falih, didn't speak about the sabotage or explosion reasons but the Persian Gulf region have seen new stresses between the United States and Iran. Iran government called International investigation about the incident.[3][2]

Background

In the days before the incident, the United States had warned that Iran or its proxies could target marine traffic in the region and proceeded to deployed naval forces to counter what it called "clear indications" of a threat.[6]

Incident

Saudi oil tanker exploded in Gulf of Oman

Four commercial ships were exploded near the UAE country’s territorial waters in the Gulf of Oman, east of the port of Fujairah, at about 06:00 that morning.[2][4] In this incident, no casualties had occurred as well as “no spillage of harmful chemicals or fuel.”[5][4] They reiterated that the incident would be investigated “in cooperation with local and international bodies.”[4][3][5]

The first report on the incident came from the Hezbollah-affiliated Al Mayadeen TV in Lebanon. The report said that seven to ten tankers were on fire in the port of Fujairah.[7] The UAE later denied this version of events but did say four ships were sabotaged off their coast.

Saudi Arabian Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources and chairman of Saudi Aramco, Khalid al-Falih, stated two of the damaged ships were Saudi owned oil tankers. "One of the two vessels was on its way to be loaded with Saudi crude oil from the port of Ras Tanura, to be delivered to Saudi Aramco's customers in the United States," he added.[2] The vessels were later identified as the Saudi-flagged Almarzoqah and Amjad, the UAE-flagged A. Michel and the Norway-flagged Andrea Victory.[8]

Thome Ship Management, the firm who own the Norwegian ship, reported that their ship had been "struck by an unknown object on the waterline" while anchored off Fujairah.[2]

In the days following the incident, US investigators reported that they believe Iran or friendly proxy groups attacked the ships with explosives.[6] Iran denied the idea that it would target marine traffic as "nonsense" called for a full investigation into the incident.[6]

Aftermath

After this incident, Oil prices rose more than $1 per barrel. Saudi Energy Minister said, Saudi oil tanker was on its way to Aramco’s customers in the United states. The explosion did serious damage to the vessels’ structures, he said.[3] Also, Dubai and Abu Dhabi stock markets saw their biggest falling, Dubai falling 4% and Saudi shares lost 3.6%, since beginning 2019.[3]

As a result of the incident the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) issued an alert to all ships off the coast of the United Arab Emirate due to "acts of sabotage"[9] and suggested caution be exercised for "at least the next week."[10]

Reaction

The Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit said in a statement that these acts are a ‘serious violation of the freedom and integrity of trade and maritime transport routes’, and says the Arab League stands by the UAE and Saudi Arabia ‘in all measures taken to safeguard their security and interests’.[11]
