Max Cole is an American filmmaker.
Early Life and Career
Cole grew up in the blue-collar "Steel City" of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His passion for directing was fueled by his interest in pop-culture, fashion, music videos, cinema, and art. He credits his Artist membership at Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Andy Warhol, The Mattress Factory, and European cinema for influencing his work.
During a two-year stretch in Pittsburgh, Cole went on to shoot a series of stylish short films and experimental projects under his production company, Topsy Turvy Films. His work soon gained the attention and respect of the local film community. His filmmaking style is referred to as "bold," "stylish," and "cinematic." Cole later relocated to Los Angeles, CA to continue experimenting behind the camera.
Upon his arrival to Los Angeles, Cole established Max Cole Films, and immediately began working at several film, music video, and commercial production. He credits the extensive hands-on experience that he received working endless hours on set as a crew member, and in the editing bay, as the mechanisms that fine-tuned his visualization and conceptualization skills.
In 2009, Cole received the Best Music Video Award at the 2009 Hollywood Black Film Festival, for the "1 out of 10" music video that he directed for actress/spoken word artist, Tanya Alexander, while attending the Musicians Institute Music Video, Film and Television Production program.[1][2][3] Shortly after receiving this award, Cole was featured in the Urban Network Magazine.[4]
In 2010, Cole received the 2010 Best Music Video Music In Media Awards Nomination for the Kelli Renee "Addicted" music video.[5] Later that year, Cole placed as a top 4 finalist in the Bartle Bogle Hegarty BBH | Talenthouse viral commercial contest for a vial animated project that he created titled, "Project ilaDusk."[6]
In 2014, Cole's short film "Alone at Midnight" received a nomination for Best Short Film at the 2014 San Diego Black Film Festival. "Alone at Midnight" also screened in the 2014 Texas Black Film Festival, 2014 Capital City Black Film Festival, and 2014 Urban MediaMakers Film Festival
His latest film, "Black Love" has screened at the 2014 Capital City Black Film Festival and the 2014 Urban MediaMakers Film Festival. In addition, "Black Love" was awarded the Best Shorty Short Award at the 2014 Urban MediaMakers Film Festival.
