The American Studies Association (ASA) is an organization founded in 1951 and is the oldest scholarly organization devoted to the interdisciplinary study of American culture and history.[1]
The ASA includes 5,000 individual members along with 2,200 library and other institutional subscribers.[1] It publishes the American Quarterly at Johns Hopkins University Press. The concerns and activities of the organization are international in scope.
History
The American Studies Association was founded for purposes of
- the promotion of the study of American culture through the encouragement of research, teaching, publication, the strengthening of relations among persons and institutions in this country and abroad devoted to such studies, and the broadening of knowledge among the general public about American culture in all its diversity and complexity.[2]
American Studies departments, programs, and centers exist around the world.[3]
2013 boycott of Israeli academic institutions
In December 2013, members of the ASA voted to join the boycott of all Israeli educational institutions.[4] This followed a similar vote taken in April 2013 by the Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) to boycott Israeli universities and academic institutions in response to calls from Palestinian civil society;[5] the boycott has since been joined by the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association.[6] In a statement on the boycott, ASA's National Council encouraged members to vote in support of the boycott because of "Israel's violation of international law and UN resolutions; the documented impact of the Israeli occupation on Palestinian scholars and students; [and] the extent to which Israeli institutions of higher education are a party to state policies that violate human rights."[7]
Israeli officials and the ADL reacted by stating that political and academic debates should not be mixed and accused the ASA of discrimination against Israel and "Orwellian antisemitism",[8] a charge denied by supporters of the boycott such as David Lloyd and Colin Dayan.[9][10]
Officials from over 100 universities have rejected the academic boycott of Israel and four universities have withdrawn from the organization: Brandeis University, Indiana University, Kenyon College, and Penn State Harrisburg.[11] Prominent university presidents who have publicly condemned the boycott include Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger, Princeton University President Christopher L. Eisgruber, New York University President John Sexton, University of Rochester President Joel Seligman,[12] and Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust[13][14] 21 faculty at Trinity College rejected the right of their president to speak in their name and encouraged him to "read up on the debate."[15] However, in response, 37 other faculty members at Trinity College issued their own letter in support of the presidents rejection of the boycott.[16] The Association of American Universities and the American Association of University Professors have both publicly denounced the boycott as a violation of the academic freedom of not only Israeli but also US scholars as well.[6]
In response to the ASA's announcement, [[Jeffrey Klein], who is New York State Senate Co-leader and Assemblyman Dov Hikind have announced plans introduce a law that will bans colleges that are members of groups that boycott Israel from receiving funding from the state of New York.[12]
The Journal of Academic Freedom, published by the AAUP, has published a special issue on academic boycott in which various views on this issue are argued.[17]
Curtiz Marez, the president of the American Studies Association and an associate professor and chair of the ethnic-studies department at the University of California at San Diego responded to critics of the boycott in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Marez argued that the ASA is "targeting Israeli universities because they work closely with the government and military in developing weapons and other technology that are used to enforce the occupation and colonization of Palestinian land, while university-associated think tanks develop political and communications strategies to advance government aims and defend them internationally." Marez also predicted that "one day, after the tide turns, boycotts against Israel and the apartheid regime it has instituted will be viewed in the same way" as Nelson Mandela.[18]
