Der Braunkohlentagebau hat in seiner ca. 350jährigen Geschichte im Südraum der Stadt Leipzig zu einer starken Veränderung des Landschaftshaushaltes sowie Landschaftsbildes geführt. Der Kohleabbau fand bis in die 1990er Jahre in der Altmoränenlandschaft auf einer Fläche von insgesamt 250 qkm statt.
