- The Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO), in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Stennis Space Center, donated the recording with Felicia Fuksman to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Oral History Branch in March 2012. NAVO produced the recording during its annual Holocaust Days of Remembrance ceremony in April 1996.

Eva Galler (née Vogel), born in Oleszyce, Poland, discusses her home town before the war; how her neighbors and friends changed during the war; the restrictions placed on Jews during the German occupation; her experience in the ghetto in Lubaczow, Poland; waiting in lines for rations; learning about the nearby death camp, Belzec; how in the winter of 1943, when she was 17 years old, the Nazis began deporting Jews out of the ghetto; being put on a cattle car with her family; how her father encouraged she and two of her siblings to jump out the train window; finding temporary refuge from a Polish woman and hearing the conversations of the locals about the deportation of the Jews; hiding briefly in a family friend’s home; going to Krakow, Poland; passing as a non-Jew and being conscripted for labor in Vienna, Austria; working on a farm in Austria and living in Czechoslovakia; being afraid to sleep and not having time to grieve; being liberated and returning to Poland; registering at the Red Cross; how her family was killed in Belzec; and finding two friends from Oleszyce. Henry (né Herschel) Galler, born in Oleszyce, Poland, discusses fighting Germans as a lieutenant in the 1st Division of the Polish Army; returning to Oleszyce after the war to find that his entire family, including three brothers and three sisters, were killed; and immigrating with Eva to Sweden where they were married.

Shep (né Sheapel) Zitler, born in Vilna, Poland (Vilnius, Lithuania) in 1917, discusses his family; his experience in the Polish Army during World War II; fighting Germany while experiencing antisemitism in the Polish Army; being sent to a labor camp following Poland’s defeat, where he was captive five years and seven months; how the Germans shipped soil from Ukraine to Germany and how he was made to unload the soil from the trains; and his liberation by Russian forces in April 1945.

Sigmund Boraks, born July 18, 1925 in Wielun, Poland, discusses his experience during Germany’s invasion of Poland; his relocation to the Cracow ghetto; his time in the Czestochowa ghetto, from which his parents and sister were shipped off to the Treblinka death camp; his experience at Blizyn labor camp from 1942 to early 1942 when he was transferred to Auschwitz; being evacuated from Auschwitz as the Russian Army advanced; the forced march to Oraniensburg, Sachsenhausen, and Kaufering until his arrival at Dachau concentration camp; and his liberation by American forces. Martin Wasserman, born June 25, 1925 in Warsaw, Poland, discusses his time from 1941 to 1942 in the Warsaw ghetto; working in a gun manufacturing company in Radom, Poland; arriving in Auschwitz and being selected to work in Vahinger, Germany (possibly Vaihingen, Germany); working in a cement factory producing bunkers; being transferred to Dachau, Germany; and being liberated by the United States Seventh Army on April 29, 1945.

Erika Eckstut, born in 1928 in Znojmo, Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic), describes how in 1931 her family moved to Bucovina (at that time part of Romania); her father, who was an attorney, and her mother, who was a homemaker; her older sister, Beatrice; attending public school and Hebrew school; her grandparents, who were very religious; her father teaching her about Judaism; her parents instilling in her a strong sense of confidence; her family being sent to the ghetto in 1941 in Czernowitz (Chernivtsi, Ukraine); her experiences in the ghetto; her father obtaining false papers for Erika and Beatrice; being separated from her parents in 1943 and staying on the move, hiding the fact she was Jewish; traveling through Russia and Poland; returning to Czechoslovakia in January 1945; reuniting with her family in September 1945; her feelings towards Germans; and the importance of love.
