Hi, I have been looking at Category:Geograph images in Ireland with interest. Are you using an online database to check coordinates? I have categorized Wales and am in the process of completing Scotland and Ireland with the Ordnance Survey's Open Data for Council/Unitary Authority definitions (you can find details of this long running project here). Unfortunately they only have Councils mapped rather than the Counties that they superseded in the 1970s see list here. I am thinking of going ahead and mapping these as a parallel to your work mapping the Counties (they could be under a separate child category) which seems useful and would not take me long for around 11,000 images available as I already have them identified.
I may be able to use the Google Maps definition of Counties to similarly map those by adding the categories you have set up, but we have found this significantly less accurate than the OS mappings.
What are your thoughts? Thanks --Fæ (talk) 20:54, 31 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
- I had forgotten that I had created those Geograph categories, and even though it was only last month, I cannot remember how I gathered Geograph images for filing in the new Geograph county categories I created. It was probably a very simple procedure of scanning for such images in existing county categories and then adding new Geograph cateories to those images using the Cat-a-lot and HotCat tools to spare tedium.
- The key detail I cannot remember is how I created a list of Geograph images to apply the tools to. Perhaps I visited categories such as Category:Roads in County Westmeath, clicked on "Select All" in Cat-a-lot, and then clicked the filenames that were highlighted in yellow that did not have "geograph.co.uk" in their file names, to unselect them and remove the yellow highlighting, then clicked the "Copy" option to send the remaining selected Geograph files to the newly-created categories. It was something like that.
- The images were already filed within existing county categories such as Category:Roads in County Dublin, so I did not have to research which counties they belonged to.
- What I can say, from looking at my history, is that the whole thing took me four to five hours on 7 July 2013. Also, I did not copy all Irish Geograph files to the new categories. I think I surveyed only the "Roads in County X" categories and copied Geograph files from those roads categories. There are other geographic categories in each county, such as Category:Rivers of County Monaghan, and on checking just now, I can see that there are Geograph images there that have not been copied to Category:Geograph images in County Monaghan, so the new Geograph categories could contain even more files from such categories as Category:Rivers of County Kerry, Category:Mountains of County Mayo, and so on.
- As for researching which counties a place may belong to, Google Maps can be useful but contains some errors. The Placenames Database of Ireland at www.logainm.ie is useful, and the Ordnance Survey maps at maps.osi.ie are accurate.
- At the latter site, zoom in on a region or district, then press numbers 1 through 8, or click the eight options on the "Preview Map Series" menu at right to see various map data layers. Option 5 is best for geography and option 6 is good for townland boundary research
- I was unaware until now of your Faebot/Geograph#C project. I just acted unilaterally and, I can see now, incompletely, since I appear to have only categorized road pictures. Does this reply help? O'Dea (talk) 21:45, 31 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
- Thanks. I was not aware of the osi.ie site and I'll have a look around at other resources. I would worry about 'automatically' applying the data from GMaps about Counties but I'll continue to ponder whether it would be worth creating the parallel Councils, at the moment it seems worth having both historic and current regions mapped using 'hidden' Geograph cats, and users can use this for interesting checks on location or more analysis however they wish. In terms of my time, I can let Faebot run and sort this out and it probably only takes a couple of hours of my time to set it up and test it. Anyway, no hurry, Scotland is taking my attention at the moment anyway.

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
