The UP Baguio College of Arts and Communication congratulates Prof. Orville B. Tatcho, Ms. Lioba Asia Piluden, and Mr. Benjamin George Meamo III for earning their International Publication Award. Here are the abstracts of their publications: Tatcho, Orville B. "Igorot Self-Representation in the# proud_to_be_an_igorot_challenge on Facebook." In Indigenous Media and Popular Culture in the Philippines: Representations, Voices, and Resistance, pp. 63-80. Singapore: Springer Nature Singapore, 2024. Abstract: This chapter examines the rhetorical nature of self-representation in the #proud_to_be_an_igorot_challenge. This hashtag went viral on Facebook in response to misrepresentations of the Igorot, a collective term that refers to different Indigenous groups in the Philippines Cordillera region. Through a rhetorical analysis of five publicly available Facebook posts that used the hashtag, as well as interviews with five self-identifying Igorot social media users, I posit that #proud_to_be_an_igorot_challenge is a rhetorical invention, or more precisely, an argument or enthymeme, that responds to exigencies such as controversy, bigotry, prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. In the #proud_to_be_an_igorot_challenge, self-representation was spurred by offensive material against Igorots in modules and textbooks produced by the Department of Education of the Philippines. While this is not the first time Igorots have been depicted negatively in learning materials, the hashtag was a recent rhetorical invention that optimizes the affordances of social media such as Facebook. Using David Zarefsky’s (2019) framework of argumentation as a perspective and James Martin’s (2014) rhetorical political analysis as a method, this paper asks: How does the #proud_to_be_an_igorot_challenge constitute a rhetorical invention and/or argument for Igorot self-representation? What are the communicative, embodied, and performative elements of the hashtag? Finally, what are the Igorots’ reflections on using the hashtag for Igorot self-representation? Piluden, Lioba Asia. "The Redness of Balitok in Ibaloy Folklore and Literature." In Indigenous Media and Popular Culture in the Philippines: Representations, Voices, and Resistance, pp. 181-197. Singapore: Springer Nature Singapore, 2024. Abstract: For centuries, the Ibaloys of Benguet, Philippines, have used traditional methods to mine for balitok (gold) and other precious metals from their mountains. The presence of balitok, like Promethean fire, transformed Ibaloy society: balitok was first intended by the Ibaloys’ foremost deity Kabunian to scatter the settlements called ili and introduce trade to the mountain people. Gold, however, also brought about social stratification and the arrival of colonial forces into the interior Cordilleras in the northern Philippines. As chronicled in their wealth of folk narratives, the Ibaloys’ view of balitok and its acquisition teach us not only of the value of land-based thinking, wealth distribution, and resource management but also remind us that the world as we know it is a world of landslides–of instability and precariousness. Living in our global ili where the present climate crisis destabilizes the everyday, the Ibaloy mythology of gold is a myth for our times, reminding us of our unstable place in nature. Drawing from this cosmology are literary offshoots from Ibaloy writers such as Sinai Hamada (“The Punishment of Kutnon” and “The Pagan”), Ryan Guinaran (“Umsiang”), and Melvin Magsanoc (“The Gold Rush”). They present a reimagining of how the ili is transformed by balitok (and how balitok, in turn, is transformed by us), from Hamada’s reportage of local life in the early colonial period, Guinaran’s Itogon-inspired verses about the transformation and objectification of land through gold, to Magsanoc’s poem about a gold rush that erodes not only the physicality of the land but also our collective well-being. Meamo III, Benjamin George. "Space, Memory, and the Right to Be Remembered: The Case of the Heroes’ Monument of the Butbut Tribe in Kalinga Province." In Indigenous Media and Popular Culture in the Philippines: Representations, Voices, and Resistance, pp. 199-221. Singapore: Springer Nature Singapore, 2024. Abstract: This chapter focuses on the significance of the Anti-Chico Dam Heroes’ Monument in the province of Kalinga, Philippines, and delves into the multifaceted dynamics of politics, space, and memory. The primary objective is to explore how these elements contribute to historical distortion and counternarratives’ emergence. In October 2020, the Department of Public Works and Highways of the Philippines issued an order to demolish the Anti-Chico Dam Heroes’ Monument in Kalinga, citing its alleged obstruction of a national road. Erected in 2017 by the residents of Bugnay, Tinglayan, Kalinga, in collaboration with the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA), the monument stands as a commemoration of prominent figures such as Macli-ing Dulag, Pedro Dungoc, Sr., Lumbaya Gayudan, and the Indigenous Peoples’ struggle against the Chico River Basin Development during the 1970s and 1980s—an era that posed a significant threat to their ancestral domain. Furthermore, this chapter investigates how the media portrayed the state’s narrative in contrast to the narrative of the resistance against the Chico Dam construction spanning the 1970s to the 1980s. It also considers the context of the demolition of the Heroes’ Monument in Bugnay in 2021. Through a comprehensive analysis of historical data and news articles, the narrative unfolds, illustrating Indigenous peoples’ profound attachment to their ancestral lands and the heroes’ monument itself. Finally, this chapter explores the influential role played by the politics of memory and the shaping of stories in history, particularly regarding the monument’s conception, construction, and eventual demolition. These aspects underscore the monument’s transformation into a contested space where the state’s narrative clashes with counternarratives. Now, it serves as a tangible symbol imbued with the memory of struggles against forced displacement, the pursuit of self-determination, militarization, and the perpetuation of historical distortion. The monument stands as a testament to these ongoing battles for remembrance and justice. University of the Philippines Baguio #TatakCAC #ProudToBeCAC

The search is on for the recipient of the 12th Darnay Demetillo Artist Award. UPB FA faculty shall nominate Fine Arts students whose painting-based works created within AY 2023-2024 exemplify originality, artistic integrity, and dedication to their craft. About The Award: Established in 2012, the annual Darnay Demetillo Artist Award (DDAA) is both a recognition of exemplary artistic work by a UP Baguio Fine Arts student, as well as an encouragement for young artists to be honest and serious about their craft. This is what the late UPB Fine Arts Professor Darnay Demetillo had always tried to teach his students. While acknowledging the originality and artistic integrity of students’ works, the DDAA is given not as part of an art competition, which makes the recognition unique. A guest jury selects the awardee from a shortlist of nominees named by the UPB Fine Arts faculty towards the end of the academic year. University of the Philippines Baguio UPB USC CAC Committee
