Bob Cousy said he’ll only attend Celtics’ banner celebration if he can bring these two people with him

"It's something I would love to participate in, but I would have one condition," Cousy said.

Bob Cousy (shown at a Worcester Red Sox game in 2022) is highly confident of the Celtics coming out on top in these Finals.

The Celtics won their NBA-record 18th championship earlier this month, and made one of their legends very happy in doing so.

NBA Hall of Famer and Celtics legend Bob Cousy told The Boston Globe‘s Dan Shaughnessy the following after Game 2 of the Finals:

“I’m 95 [expletive] years old with one foot in the grave and I can barely move. I know I’m in overtime. So everything in your life becomes more meaningful. And one of the last things I want to be able to see is for the Celtics to hang up banner No. 18.”

Well, the Celtics won and Cousy got to see it. The team celebrated with a fabulous parade around town, and they’ll have another ceremony to hang the banner on opening night in the fall.

During a recent interview with NBC Sports Boston, Cousy said he’d like to be there, but only on one condition.

“It’s something I would love to participate in, but I would have one condition,” Cousy said. “That I share it with my dear friend and the only remaining player left from the 50s and 60s, Satch Sanders, who doesn’t get enough attention. I would love to have him by my side.”

“And the other friend I would ask to join me is Governor Maura Healey who has become a good friend, and of course who has a basketball background. She was captain at Harvard years ago. She always references the Celtics and how they’re doing, so we’d talk ball and then solve the problems with the state.”

The title puts the Celtics in sole possession of most NBA championships by a single franchise.

“This puts us back ahead of the Lakers,” Cousy said. “To have been a part of that is as good a legacy as I could hope for.”
