Barbara Jordan (1936-1996) was the first African-American state senator in Texas, and the first woman and first African-American representative elected to Congress from Texas. She taught political ethics at the University of Texas at Austin's Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. The Barbara Jordan papers contain letters written by Jordan, as well as materials pertaining her teaching, the dedication of the Barbara Jordan statue on the UT campus in 2009, and the memorial service for her held at UT in January 1996.

The Ann Rivers Witherspoon Music Collection, 1997, consists of unpublished materials comprised of one complete musical score, three librettos, and three CDs featuring portions of the music and narrative that accompany Witherspoon's opera titled "Barbara Edine: A Contemporary American Opera," which chronicles Barbara Jordan's response to both historical and personal life events.
