Biography
Langston Hughes (1901 or 1902-1967), American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri. Hughes's birth year was likely 1901 but was previously thought to be 1902. His dates of existence in this person record are pulled from the Library of Congress Name Authority File, which still uses the 1902 birth year. For a fuller explanation of discrepancies in Hughes’s birth year, see Jennifer Schuessler, “Langston Hughes Just Got a Year Older," New York Times, August 9, 2018.
