"While the HBO movie 'The Tuskegee Airmen' showcased the efforts of this group of African American Pilots, the documentary Airmen and Adversity tells the story in their own words. "They put up with the day to day reality of racism in the Jim Crow South, but went on to become one of the best squadrons in World War Two. "As many of these men are in the sunset of their lives, some are getting the recognition they deserve for the very first time in their lives. "We highlighted the role that the Carolinas played in their development, and that many communities are paying tribute to this group of black pilots. "They faced not only Hitler's Army, but hardship here at home too, before and after the war. "Because of the local and regional awareness raised by our story, we hope that it will be every consideration for a Peabody award."--1998 Peabody Awards entry form.
