Scope and Content:

Fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used by William Grenville Davis in his private life and political career as a member of the Ontario Legislature, Minister of Education, Minister of University Affairs and Premier of Ontario. Records document his campaigns, family life, public appearances, interviews, political activities and charitable work. Textual records in the fonds include campaign material, correspondence and scrapbooks of newspaper articles about his career.


Fonds consists primarily of photographs that depict Davis' political activities, home life, family, vacations, and campaigns. They also depict him in his roles as Minister of Education, Minister of University Affairs and Premier of Ontario, and as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. Photographs also document activities after his political career, including convocations and events thrown in his honour.


Textual records in the fonds include personal correspondence, ephemera and other material related to events attended by the Davis' and records that document Kathleen Davis' appearances at events while Mr. Davis was Premier of Ontario.


Sound recordings in the fonds include interviews, speeches, campaign events, and other political events.


Films in the fonds record appearances and speeches made by Davis and his wife, Kathleen Davis.


Artifacts in the fonds include campaign materials such as stickers and pins, plaques honouring Davis and a plaque commemorating his father, Grenville Davis` oath to Ontario, as well as other artifacts commemorating significant events in his career.


Administrative History or Biographical Sketch:

William (Bill) Grenville Davis was a Progressive Conservative member of the Ontario Legislature who served as Minister of Education between 1962 and 1971 and Premier of Ontario between 1971 and 1985.
