Take a look at the new Museum of the Viking Age

For the first time, we get to see how the Oseberg ship will be displayed in the new museum.

The design for the exhibitions is now finalized, and new detailed illustrations show how the Oseberg ship and the other Viking treasures can be experienced when the museum is planned to open in 2027.

The exhibition design has been developed in collaboration with the world-leading agencies Ralph Appelbaum Associates and Tamschich Media + Space. Skilled partners will ensure that the visitor experience is on par with the best museums in the world, and that the Museum of the Viking Age fulfills its ambition of becoming the world's most important conveyors of the Viking Age.

Spectacular

A funeral procession is one of the first things the visitors will experience, featuring the world's only preserved wagon from the Viking Age, three magnificent sleds, and the iconic animal heads from the Oseberg burial mound as highlights.

The Oseberg ship itself will be presented in two different modes – three to four times per hour, the lighting in the hall will be dimmed, and through the use of light, sound, and projections, the audience will experience the ship in a more dramatic way. The ship is exceptionally well-preserved, with 90 percent of the original wood still intact.

5500 artifacts

The exhibitions will tell the story of the Norse people and their world – a time characterized by significant change. In addition to the Oseberg ship and the Gokstad ship having their own halls, the museum will offer a variety of themed exhibition rooms that will display around 5500 artifacts from the Viking Age. This includes hundreds of swords and impressive gold and silver treasures, as well as everyday objects such as footwear and kitchen utensils.

The new Museum of the Viking Age will be three times the size of the previous Viking Ship Museum, and the main purpose of the expansion is to preserve the world's most important collection of ships and artifacts from the Viking Age for future generations. The Museum of the Viking Age will provide a completely new experience of the Viking Age, and we look forward to opening its doors in 2027.
