Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow may be the guiding force of the ongoing Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but back in the beginning Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner was, in fact, the hero of the saga—and now he’ll get a chance to prove it again. Disney announced at today’s D23 Expo that Bloom will reprise his role as Will in the upcoming Pirates film Dead Men Tell No Tales, due in theaters in 2017.

Bloom wasn’t on hand to charm the crowd, but Depp was, appearing onstage in full Jack Sparrow costume and cracking jokes (“Where are we?” “Disneyland.” “Never heard of it.”) and, for reasons that may only be clear to those in the room, pelting the audience with grapes. The new Pirates film also stars Kaya Scodelario (in, we’re guessing, the Keira Knightley-modeled ingénue role), Brenton Thwaites, Geoffrey Rush, and Javier Bardem as the new baddie. Before you go rolling your eyes and wondering how this decade-plus-old franchise keeps humming, remember that 2011’s On Stranger Tides—though boasting the lowest domestic box office of the franchise—made more than $1 billion worldwide. In true pirate form, it’s overseas that this gang feels most at home.
