Synopsis
Arthur Peyton, sole owner of Peyton Frocks, Inc., has a wardrobe full of problems. His business is beset by lagging sales and slow payments, and his son Andy has just returned from college announcing that he wants to make his career as a writer of stage reviews. Andy is supported in this ambition by ex-burlesque chorus girl Francine LaVerne. Edna, the elder Peyton's secretary, and Stanislaus Gregorovich Danniliewski, the firm's janitor, want to put on an amateur show to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Peyton Frocks. Andy is so taken with the idea of the show that he volunteers to become its director, much to the consternation of Stanislaus, who formerly held that post. In the midst of the rehearsals, Andy is introduced to self-styled producer Theodore Gateson, who offers to present a commercial production of the musical that Andy wrote while in college. As business gets worse at Peyton Frocks, Arthur decides to take to the road to drum up sales, but first gives Gateson $35,000 to produce his son's musical. Gateson, a con man, pockets the money and hits the road right after Arthur. Despite these setbacks, the show goes on, as Edna, who really wants to be a designer, comes up with a new line of gowns. She then puts Andy to work devising a revue in which she plans to introduced the new line to a group of buyers. Just as the show is about to come to a close, Stanislaus and Francine arrive backstage with a beaten and bruised Gateson, whom they have apprehended with $20,000. The show is a great success, and the gowns an even greater one. Sales soar to record levels, and the stolen money is used to pay off the company's outstanding debts. In addition, Stanislaus has tricked John Maxwell, a real producer, into attending the show, and he is so impressed that he agrees to mount the revue on Broadway. Stanislaus and Francine discover that they are made for each other, as do Andy and Edna.

The working title for this film was Stitches and Stars. Hollywood Reporter reported in December 1940 that this film was placed on the Universal production schedule to replace the shelved Moonlight in Hawaii (see entry above). In February 1941, Stitches and Stars was then shelved until it was renamed Sing Another Chorus in early March 1941. On March 7, 1941, Hollywood Reporter announced that Jane Frazee had been assigned to the film, which would star her and Johnny Downs, who had canceled two weeks of stage work to appear in the picture. According to Universal press material, the production marked the first professional appearance by the dance team of Peter and Ronald Peters, ages eleven and fourteen. Motion Picture Herald Prod Digest commented that the picture marked "the ascension of Jane Frazee to star billing." Frazee was signed to a split contract between Universal and Republic during the production of the film.
