Synopsis

Charlie Barnes is a New York taxi driver who is in love with shop girl Chris Edwards. Charlie plans to own a string of taxis one day, and as a start, he buys a half-interest in a small garage, but needs $200 to complete the purchase. Now all he wants is to get married immediately, but practical Chris insists that they wait until they have some money saved. In the meantime, Chris, who is starstruck, eagerly anticipates the arrival of her favorite Hollywood star, Vania Nardi. She buys tickets to the reception that has been planned by Greg Haywood, Vania's manager, and Charlie agrees to escort her. Vania has no intention of attending the reception, however. She leaves the train before it reaches Grand Central Station and hails Charlie's taxi. He drives her to her hotel, where an angry Haywood is waiting. Haywood insists that Vania attend the reception escorted by Prince Devorak, but she refuses, saying she will only go if Charlie accompanies her. At first, Charlie turns her down, but when Haywood offers him $250, he sees the opportunity to pay off his debt in the garage and cancels his date with Chris. Suspicious, Chris follows him to Vania's apartment, arriving just as Haywood is telling Devorak that he will not be Vania's escort. Devorak, who is part of a gang of jewel thieves interested in Vania's diamonds, is furious, so Haywood pays Chris to pose as a French movie star and attend the reception as Devorak's date. When Chris and Charlie meet at the theater, they quarrel. Charlie and Devorak resort to their fists, and during the fight, Vania's necklace disappears. Suspecting Devorak, Charley grabs him and the police arrest both of them. The thief is discovered with the diamonds and implicates Devorak in the theft. The next morning Chris ends her quarrel with Charlie when she gives him the $300 she earned, and they become full partners in the garage.
