Rodney Parade has welcomed some of the most powerful heavyweights that English football has to offer in recent years, and that tradition is only living on as Newport County are set to host Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

It’s a mouth-watering home tie for County, who had to fight off National League trio Oldham Athletic, Eastleigh and Barnet to get to the fourth-round, but they’ll harbour no intentions of letting the finish line arrive this quickly.

Manchester United, however, saw past neighbours Wigan Athletic to book their place into the next round, and quite arguably represent the most tantalising guests to ever arrive at Rodney Parade.

Newport County vs Manchester United team news

Last season’s top goalscorer Omar Bogle, who has found the back of the net on seven occasions this time around, will be a big miss when the Red Devils come to town.

The former Cardiff City frontman sustained a muscle injury during a training session at the end of December, which is scheduled to keep him off the pitch for 8-10 weeks.

Newport’s striking options are scarce at the minute, and while Offrande Zanzala’s eventual return to action may ease the burdens on Seb Palmer-Houlden and, of course, 15-goal star Will Evans, his recovery from ruptured ligaments will not come in time for Sunday’s showdown.

Their defensive options are also thin on the ground, with Declan Drysdale and Josh Seberry both still unavailable owing to long-term injury setbacks.

On the other hand, Erik Ten Hag will be frustrated to not be able to call upon the services of many of his trusted first-team lieutenants.

French forward Anthony Martial has been ruled out of action until April with a groin injury, while the likes of Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire all remain on the treatment table, too.

Summer signings Andre Onana and Sofyan Amarbat will also be absent from the trip to south Wales, with the duo having helped Cameroon and Morocco respectively to the knockout stages of this year’s African Cup of Nations.
