ATHENS, Ala. (WAFF) - A 15-year-old who was allegedly threatening family members with knives and guns on Saturday afternoon has died after being shot by an Athens police officer.

According to Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell, the incident happened on Elles Drive around 2:15 p.m. after a caller said a 15-year-old, now identified as Gabriel McNutt by Limestone County Coroner Mike West, was acting out of control and threatening family members with weapons.

Pressnell said when officers arrived at the house, they found McNutt armed with knives. The 15-year-old reportedly went to various rooms of the house and threw knives at officers.

Officials said McNutt then pointed a rifle and shot at officers which led an officer to fire their weapon. Pressnell said officers administered first aid before Athens Fire and Athens EMS arrived. The teen received medical treatment but later died.

The Athens Police Department said the investigation is now being turned over to the State Bureau Of Investigations.
