First black barbie

This doll is historically well-known as the first Black Barbie. Did you have one when you were a child and if so, do you remember her actual name and the year she made her debut in stores? Born in racially segregated South Carolina in 1948, Louvenia (Kitty) Black Perkins grew up playing with white dolls gifted by her mother’s employers. Aug 19, 2012 - Mattel introduced Christie in 1968. Their first attempt in 1967 in launching an African American doll flopped. She had the same face as Christie, but the (smaller) body of Barbie's cousin Francie. Mattel received tons of complaints that she didn't fit into Barbie's clothes, so Christie was launched a year later & could wear Barbie fashions.
