Entered as google maps suggested from 101: Jolan Rd-Mission Road-Del Venturi Rd. Passed through the base without a problem. Had my documents at the ready (license, registration, proof of insurance) that base information told me to have but the gate on Mission Rd heading into the base was not staffed just before 8am on a Saturday, and a sign said the road was open to through traffic. You definitely proceed through the base passing obstacle courses and other training sites, but never the installation itself, passing just by the main entrance. There are two creek concrete creek crossings on Del Venturi Road, which were no problem for my car though I imagine in high rain years it would be. You can call base information on the status of these.
Parked along the road just before the campground and proceeded up the well-worn trail to the summit. The last mile or so was dense with brush, a layer of snow on the ground, and a few downed trees. Great views of Cone Peak and the Big Sur mountains from the top. Ate lunch at the survey marker, signed the register, and came back down the way I came. |
