Ascent Trip Report

Left NE PA. at 6:30am and arrived at parking lot on Frost Valley Rd. about 9am. One other car in lot. The roads were snow covered and slippery. Hiked the yellow dot trail to the red dot trail and took that to the top. I hiked about 1/2 hr., then stopped to put on my new micro spikes. Wow, what a difference in traction. I'm glad I started out without them so I could see the difference. There was 2-3" of snow on the ground with ice underneath in places. I had been slipping until I put on the microspikes. They add some weight to your feet, but are worth every penny for the added traction. This was my 1st winter hike and I was also wearing my new Garmont boots and crocodile gaitors which also worked great. The top half of the mountain had zero visibility and it was snowing heavy at times with a decent wind. I met a guy from Pittsburg near the top, he was on his way back down and we chatted for a bit. Not much to see on top...just touched the top and headed back down. It was a real nice winter hike, I didn't have any troubles at all. I got back to the car in pretty good time. Round trip took 3 1/2 hours, 2 1/4 up and 1 1/4 down. Loved my new gear. Microspikes worked great...good investment. I tried to be as prepared as I could be for my 1st winter hike, and everything went as planned. It won't be long now until I do another winter hike. Made it back home by about 3:30pm.
