Ascent Trip Report

Day 3 of 10 on our annual 4th of July peaktrip.

Camped by McCloud falls last night then got a bit of a late start and drove to the Deadfall Meadows trailhead. Wasn't expecting a paved road all the way here but I'm not used to Pacific Coast roads. Very skinny though.

Trailhead was pretty full (so was parks creek) but we found a spot. Left shortly after and heading up the trail which starts muddy in places and a few creek jumps. Trail gains a bit to deadfall lakes but pretty short endeavor. I chose this TH because I wanted the shorter approach in exchange for more gain.

Was expecting a ton of people hiking the peak given how many cars were on both trailheads but it appeared the vast majority were just camping out here. Nice view of the steep side of Eddy once at the final lake and then the ridge trail and wide switchbacks were cake. Once at the top I found one other couple there sitting and looking in the direction of Shasta, that was completely shrouded by clouds hovering around Eddy.

We all patiently waited there for over a half hour for the clouds to break, and finally they exposed just enough of a window to get a view. Shasta ended up being out of the clouds all day aside from the late afternoon. We had the choice of switching Shasta tomorrow with Eddy today, but the weather wasn't looking much different between the two days and we figured monday would be less busy. That ended up being a BIG mistake.

Once satisfied with a partial view, I easily hustled all the way back to the trailhead with nothing of interest to note. We headed down to Weed for Grocery Outlet and Taco Bell (most expensive Taco Bell I ever ate at and it was a full half an hour before we got our food).
