Ascent Trip Report

Access: I began my hike from the intersection of the Pacific Crest Trail with Forest Rte 42N17. I placed a pin on this location in Google maps and it got me there just fine. The roads are paved the whole way, but it is narrow and winding and not maintained in the winter. Check conditions if attempting this route in the off season. There was ample parking and a restroom at the trailhead. There is an alternate route that starts a bit to the south at the Deadfall Meadows trailhead. On the way back I met a guy who came up from that route and it sounds like the two routes are quite similar.

The Climb: From the trailhead, get on the PCT heading east. You will pass an old service road, where you will want to stay on the PCT. After about 3 miles, you will reach a junction with the Deadfall Meadows trail, where you will want to take a left. Follow this trail for another 2 miles or so as it winds around small alpine lakes. Eventually you will gain a ridge and come to another junction. Take a left at this junction and follow the Mount Eddy Trail as it switchbacks up to the summit. Foundations of an old lookout tower and the benchmark are at the high point and the register is hidden at the far west end of the summit area. I shared the summit with a group of four women who were delightfully cheerful and we took photos for each other. On the return hike I met an 80-something year old man cruising up the trail (hopefully I am still chugging along at that age), two guys mountain biking all the way to Lake Siskiyou that day, and a woman who was a wildflower expert. It was nice to see so many people having such a great day in the mountains.

My Thoughts: This was one of my favorite climbs to date. A beautiful hike without too much elevation gain, impeccable views of Mount Shasta, and ticking off my 5th ultra made this a near perfect day. I got an early start, finishing the entire hike by noon, so I was able to beat the heat. If you are in the area, Mount Eddy is highly recommended.

I am always looking for climbing partners, so feel free to contact me if you want to team up.
