Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an increasingly significant cause of morbidity, disability, and mortality around the world. According to the World Health Organization, COPD is the third leading cause of death globally, with a pooled prevalence of 11% and an estimated 3.23 million deaths attributed to the disease. The prevalence of COPD is expected to continue to increase as a result of the aging population, urbanization, and other risk factors. Treatment is essential to manage symptoms, improve quality of life, and reduce the risk for exacerbations. And while many standards remain the same, there have been some recent notable guideline updates and new drugs under review as potential therapy for COPD of which are important to be aware.
