My top three IT priorities at Mercedes-Benz to focus on in 2018.

My top three IT priorities at Mercedes-Benz to focus on in 2018.

In the tech world, every year is full of innovations and surprises. Some of them have a lesser, some of them a greater impact on how we live, work and meet the future. When I think back 20 years, to the time when I had just started at Daimler, I can still hear the dial-up sound of my 56k modem. Today, we are talking about 5G to accelerate connected cars.

However, only few innovations manage to set milestones. I think that the last years were just the warm-up and make me even more curious about what is to come. But let’s take small steps. Here is my list of what I expect 2018 has in store for us and what to focus on.

2017, for my team and myself was the year of Cloud and DevOps, Identity and Access Management, and Indirect-to-Direct within our IT strategy “Data is the new Oil”. Priorities I want to continue focusing on this year. Here is why:

Cloud and DevOps

Now you might think that it is hard to find a company that does not have a cloud strategy and you are right. But releasing software faster requires changes in technology and methodology. As to technology, we need to leverage cloud, APIs and micro-services. When it comes to methodology, it is about true agile/scrum. We tied all of this together under the heading DevOps and Continuous Delivery.

Indirect-to-Direct: expanding core expertise

To become faster and ensure best quality, we have to get closer to coding and technology. Indirect-to-Direct is about expanding our core expertise. By 2020, we want to evolve 1,000 people into direct positions such as front-end developers, UX/UI designers or solution architects. And we have already taken big steps towards this goal by providing career paths and trainings. More than 500 additional positions are transferred.

Free open-source software (FOSS)

Free open-source software is the foundation of our digital world. Open source has proven crucial in shortening innovation cycles. Furthermore, by employing open-source software, we expect to attract strong talents, as this also is an excellent chance for developers to showcase their work. And, of course, lowering costs cannot be ignored either.

2018 will be a really interesting year for my team and myself. I am looking forward to it.

Apart from technology, i do believe, organizations should focus Change Mgnt. in few areas like Culture, Organization. It is very important, as many leaders and managers in organization should change.

It's encouraging to see that me and my team is working on same line and in same direction. Next thing which can help is to focus on training resources and encourage them to get full stack capabilities to improve innovation cycle.

Clear and precise goals, thanks for sharing. Talking about those faster release cycles: I think it's crucial to get immediate feedback from our customers and to be flexible enough (& willing to) react on it. How do you plan to establish this loop and the mindset to make (more) feedback-based decisions?
