President-elect Joe Biden on Monday named Alejandro Mayorkas, a partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr who was previously a top official in the Obama administration, as his nominee for secretary of homeland security.

Mayorkas, if confirmed, would become the first Latino to lead the Department of Homeland Security, the agency responsible for immigration policy. With the announcement of his selection, Mayorkas became the first lawyer at a major U.S. law firm to be picked by Biden for a cabinet role.
