Tompkins County Sheriff Derek R. Osborne announced on 4/29/2024 that Mark A. Vanderhoof of Union Springs, New York, a probationary Corrections Officer with the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, has been charged with Official Misconduct, a Class A Misdemeanor, and Harassment 2nd, a Violation. These charges stem from an incident on 4/26/24, where Vanderhoof allegedly forcefully struck an incarcerated individual in the back of the head and face at the Tompkins County Jail.

In a statement, Sheriff Osborne outlined the nature of the allegations and the department's response: "The physical force utilized was deemed to be unjustified and contrary to office policy and Article 35 of the New York State Penal Law that dictates when force is authorized to be used by corrections officers." Sheriff Osborne emphasized the department's commitment to fair and humane treatment of incarcerated individuals and reiterated that behavior contrary to these standards will not be tolerated.

Vanderhoof, who had recently joined the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office from the NYS Department of Corrections, was terminated from his position following an investigation. Sheriff Osborne clarified, "Vanderhoof was working alongside a field training officer and was immediately terminated." The findings of the investigation and the termination were reported to relevant authorities for further review.

The Tompkins County Sheriff's Office's response underscores its dedication to transparency and accountability in addressing allegations of misconduct within its ranks. Sheriff Osborne's statement concluded with a reminder of the presumption of innocence: "An indictment, like any criminal charge, is solely an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty."

As the legal process progresses, the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office remains committed to upholding the principles of justice and maintaining public trust.
