Despite critical and awards success, Apple TV+ has yet to reach significant subscriber growth.
When it comes to critical and awards metrics, Apple TV+ has been an unqualified success since launching in 2019. However, when it comes to viewership and subscriptions, the jury is still decidedly out. Since its debut, Apple’s subscription streaming service has rallied around the motto of “quality over quantity,” and last week's Emmy nominations were a testament to that effort, as Apple TV+ took home 72 nominations, including ones in every major category. However, the streamer has spent heavily on those titles and has yet to see significant increases in subscriber totals. Therefore, the tech company’s executives are reportedly looking to shed its reputation as the biggest spender in streaming and rein in the costs of its pricey projects.

Ridley Scott isn't exactly a stickler for historical accuracy. Though the director is known for overseeing a fair few historical epics, from the original "Gladiator" to "Napoleon," the famously crotchety filmmaker also doesn't shackle himself to the real-life historical record. With "Napoleon," for instance, Scott decided researching the titular emperor's life in books was entirely unnecessary. Unsurprisingly, then, the Joaquin Phoenix-led epic contained a few striking moments that, in reality, sort of happened but didn't.
This is nothing new for Scott. Back in 2000, "Gladiator" debuted with Russell Crowe in the lead role of Maximus. But while Scott hired several historical advisors to ensure much of the film was as true to history as possible, Maximus himself was not a real-life person. Rather, he was a conglomeration of various historical figures. So, while he has an obvious respect for history, Ridley Scott is clearly a director first and foremost, which...

After Honey Boy, director Alma Har’el appeared ready to take over the world. She took home the First-time Director award from the DGA and wowed many with her showcase feature. However, sometimes it takes a minute to find the right project, and lucky for us, Alma Har’el found Lady in the Lake. Based on the acclaimed novel by Laura Lippman, Har’el directs all seven episodes of the 1960’s set murder mystery. Told from the perspectives of a Jewish journalist and a black bookkeeper, the story dives into the racial and misogynistic politics of the era. Har’el dives into the intricacies of the story with vigor, creating a deeply satisfying journey with brutal honesty about its characters.

“Shōgun,” FX’s buzzy samurai drama of feudal Japan created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, led all Emmys craft categories July 17 with 16 nominations. Next came “Fallout” (Prime Video), “True Detective: Night Country” (HBO), and “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu) with 13 noms each.
After that it was spread out among “The Crown” (Netflix) and “The Bear” (FX) with nine; “Palm Royale” (Apple TV+), “Hacks” (Max), and “Ripley” (Netflix) with eight; “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (Prime Video) and “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” (FX) with six; “What We Do in the Shadows” (FX), “3 Body Problem” (Netflix), “Ahsoka” (Disney+/Lucasfilm), and “Lessons in Chemistry” (Apple TV+) with five; “Baby Reindeer” (Netflix) and “The Morning Show” (Apple TV+) with four; and “The Gilded Age” (HBO), “Loki” (Disney+/Marvel), “Masters of the Air” (Apple TV+), “Slow Horses” (Apple TV+), and “Reservation Dogs” (FX) — in its third and final season — with three.

Just six months after the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards (which were delayed amid the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023), the nominations for the 76th Emmy Awards have been revealed. While things mostly went as expected, a few standouts are worth noting. Apple TV+ and FX have positioned themselves as true competitors against long-dominating networks like Netflix and HBO/Max. Moreover, in a hard-won battle for representation, the Indigenous community and women of color have made significant strides, suggesting that the television landscape has finally turned a corner regarding diversity and inclusion. (Read the full list of nominees here.)

Some things about the Emmys are predictable. Every awards observer figured that FX’s Shōgun and The Bear would get lots of nominations today, and they did: 25 and 23, respectively, the latter a record for the comedy categories in the case of The Bear.
But unexpected things, both good and bad, always happen when the Emmy nominations are announced, and this year’s list was no different. Let’s run through some of those.

With fewer eligible series — a consequence of both last year’s strikes and of a general post-Peak TV contraction — it seemed unlikely that the Emmys (the second such ceremony this year!) would provide much in the way of surprises.
Perhaps, though, awards-watchers shouldn’t have counted them out.
Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement featured at least one major contender (Emma Stone in “The Curse”) shut out, and included heartening and unexpected recognition for other stars whose names hadn’t been part of the conversation to this point. (Congratulations to Idris Elba and Matt Berry!)
In all, the Emmy nominations depict an industry in rapid transition — relatively few returning series made the cut. But nowhere was the competition more pitched, and the volume of surprise omissions as high, as in the limited series field. (Read the full list of nominees here.)

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Emma Stone for Best Drama Actress and a complete shutout of her Showtime series “The Curse.” Equally surprising was “Shogun” supporting actresses Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido missing the ballot. On the comedy side, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” missed for Comedy Series and a forecasted bid for its star Theo James. And although “The Bear” had a solid morning overall, Abby Elliott wasn’t able to ride the wave of fortune in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Oliver Platt and Matty Matheson were also snubbed on the Supporting Actor side.
Below, we enumerate the top 50 Emmys snubs in our estimation. These were the shows and performers that we thought had a strong chance to number among this year’s nominees. Let us know if there are others missing from this list that...

It speaks somewhat to the predictability of the Emmys that one of the biggest surprises in this year’s nominations was the fact that a series that set a new record for comedy nominations in a single year (“The Bear”) wasn’t even more dominant than it was – landing a mere 10 acting bids spread through the lead, supporting and guest comedy categories and missing out on that record of 14 for “Succession.” But beyond that, there were some mild surprises and a few somewhat less mild ones, including the semi-dominant performance of the first-year drama “Fallout” and “Reservation Dogs” finally scoring its first comedy series nom in its third and final season.

As this morning’s Emmy nominations prove, there may be less TV being made nowadays, but the quality certainly hasn’t declined with the quantity.
As widely expected, The Bear, Baby Reindeer, True Detective: Night Country and Shōgun were mentioned more than once by past Emmy winners Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale on Wednesday morning. As Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego said, “it was an exceptional year in television.” It certainly seemed exceptional that, for the first time in a long while, the names Succession and Ted Lasso were not heard when the nominations were read, as those multiple winners have wrapped up their runs.

Industry heavyweights Atticus Ross (“Shogun”), Michael Minkler (“Masters of the Air”) and Robert Elswit (“Ripley”) were among those who led the Creative Art Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning.
FX’s “Shogun” dominated the Emmy nominations Wednesday morning, landing 25 nods. The drama series based on James Clavell’s epic novel landed musician and composer Ross a nomination for music composition for a series while costume designer Carlos Rosario was also nominated.
Speaking with Variety, Rosario explained how he created over 2300 designs for the series set in feudal Japan.
Elswit, who reunited with directed Steven Zaillian for Netflix’s “Ripley,” earned his first Primetime Emmy nod. The Oscar winning Dp (“There Will Be Blood”) sat down for Variety’s Inside the Frame series and explained how he wanted to get inside Tom Ripley’s (Andrew Scott) mind and give the series a painterly effect.

Steven Spielberg, the master auteur, had somewhat of a crash course in the interdependent working relationship between a director and the studio quite early on in his career. Despite his natural expertise and ingrained talent for producing cinematic masterpieces, Spielberg is not entirely immune to box office failures.

The director of the aquatic thriller, Jaws, and sci-fi alien film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, had ridden the wave of success and glory for far too long to realize that without studio interference, a project can sometimes go downhill too. And Spielberg was quick to learn that on the evening of the premiere of 1941.
Steven Spielberg and His Radical New Hollywood Era
No studio production enters the final theatrical lineup without the absolute say-so of the higher-up execs. The Hollywood of today is entirely guided by the principle of equal collaboration between the suits and the creatives.

For Tom Hanks, his long-time partnership with esteemed Hollywood director and producer Steven Spielberg began as a cautionary tale. He had seen enough actors and directors starting off as friends, working together on a project, butting heads on set, growing resentful over their creative differences, falling out, and ending up in a fraught relationship. Hanks didn’t want that to happen with him and Spielberg.

However, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and that was the mentality Hanks chose to adopt in his first attempt at a collaboration with Spielberg on Saving Private Ryan. Suffice it to say, the end result was so revolutionary that the pair ended up working together on multiple projects in multiple capacities over the course of the next 26 years (and counting).

Darren Aronofsky's next movie, Caught Stealing, has nabbed itself another A-List powerhouse actor to lead its increasingly starry line-up. Following the news earlier this week that Zoë Kravitz is in talks to join Austin Butler in The Whale filmmaker's latest, today Deadline have reported that Academy Award winner Regina King has signed on to help bring Aronofsky's buzzy crime thriller to life.

Kommenden Mittwoch werden die Emmy-Nominierungen bekannt gegeben. Spot blickt auf die aussichtsreichsten Kandidaten und nennt weitere Anwärter auf den so begehrten TV- und Streaming-Preis.
Favoriten (v.l.): „The Bear“, „Rentierbaby“ und „Shōgun“
Am 17. Juli werden die 76. Primetime-Emmy-Nominierungen bekannt gegeben. Die Preisverleihung findet am 15. September statt.

Tom Hanks, the actor who defined an entire generation and influenced the pop culture of an era, had a hard time accepting work from one of the greatest directors of Hollywood. Almost 3 decades down the line, it seems unforgivable to think we nearly missed Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers because of a near-superstitious belief on the actor’s part.

While Spielberg established himself with an unassailable career arc comprising such movies (and franchises) as Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and Schindler’s List, the privilege of being directed by the Hollywood legend is akin to no other experience within the industry.
In hindsight, it was obvious that Hanks and Spielberg would end up collaborating on projects more than once, and come out the other end all the better for it.

Masters of the Air premiered this year on Apple TV+, but although it was the biggest release in the history of streaming, few know that the production is part of a war trilogy produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. One of them, and one of the most notable, is Band of Brothers.

If there is any agreement among Emmy pundits this awards season, it’s the fact that perhaps the most competitive collection of categories surrounds the limited series genre, where an embarrassment of riches promises a dogfight among an abundant list of worthy nominees in Best Limited Series and the four limited/made-for-tv movie acting lineups. During a limited-focused slugfest debate in advance of the Emmy nominations announcement on July 17, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond were all in agreement that Gold Derby pacesetter “Baby Reindeer” is a worthy frontrunner that’s likely to ultimately take the top limited prize (assuming it is in fact nominated). But they were all over the map on how the rest of that category shaped up as well as how the performer slots were poised to shake out. While there are a...

When the pivotal story of the unassailable soldiers from the Easy Company – based on real-life accounts of a war so cataclysmic that it smashed the proverbial...

HBO’s Band of Brothers has numerous reasons for being successful and relevant to this day – but one of the most crucial reasons remains the series’ insistence on staying true to the events in history. With a background of extensive research (enough to break one’s back), the creators of the World War epic spared no expense in bringing the tale of the Easy Company to light.

Equipped with first-hand accounts, letters, journals, interviews, historians’ documents, etc., Erik Jendresen set out with an ambition to voice a piece of history that would seem too fantastical even for a television drama. However, it was one genius aspect of the show, thought of by Steven Spielberg himself, that helped to suspend the suspension of disbelief from episodes of the series.

There may have not been as much television in 2024 so far as in previous years, but there was a Hell of a lot of great TV in the first half of this year.
The harsh beauty of FX’s Shōgun, the depths of Baby Reindeer and Big Mood, the wit of Diarra from Detroit, and the surprising scope of X-Men ’97 set a very high standard. The icy reset that is the Issa López created True Detective: Night Country was another such high. Add to that the historical script flip of The Sympathizer, the sometimes brutal honestly of Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, Diane Lane and Jeff Daniels’ masterclass in A Man in Full, and the barrier drop kicking of Echo.
So, if you are looking for some true creative fireworks this Independence Day, may I suggest casting your eyes over our selection of some of the best new shows of 2024 so far.

Dneg, the London-headquartered visual effects and animation house that has won Oscars for the likes of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Netflix’s Stranger Things, said Tuesday it secured a $200 million investment from the Abu Dhabi-based United Al Saqar Group.
Dneg is also the preferred visual effects creator for Christopher Nolan on movies like Inception, Interstellar and Tenet. The visual effects and animation company will use the cash injection to accelerate artificial intelligence-driven content creation at Brahma, Dneg’s newly-launched technology division.
The new funds will also go towards bolstering other divisions like the content arm Prime Focus Studios, acquired in 2023 and a provider of cloud-based software and AI technology for the media industry, including major studios and streamers, and creating a visual experience hub in Abu Dhabi.

And just like that, 2024 is already half over. Crazy, isn’t it? It feels like Christmas was just a minute ago, but here we are in the middle of summertime. Before we know it, the fall festivals will open up, the awards race will begin, and people will start debating the year’s best movies.
But here’s the thing – whenever people start talking about the best movies of the year, they always neglect all of the films that came out in the first half of the year. Studios know this, which is why high-profile, prestigious movies always bow in the fourth quarter of the year. So, to give these movies a bit of a spotlight, we here at JoBlo have decided to list the 10 best movies of 2024…so far (in no particular order).

Five years ago, Austin Butler’s memorable supporting role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood turned out to be his audition for leading man status, and he’s since become not only a leader on set but a leader on Hollywood’s new A-list.
Coming off of Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air and a villainous role in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, Butler is now back on the big screen in Jeff Nichols’ long-awaited 1960s crime drama, The Bikeriders. Wherever I go, when I tell people that I work as an editor for Gold Derby, they never fail to bring up their latest binge-fest and how obsessed they were with it. “Ripley” occupied that space for several weeks, replaced by “Baby Reindeer,” then “Fellow Travelers.” Before that, I ran into a bunch of “Lessons in Chemistry” fans, and friends who were absolutely obsessed with “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” “Fargo: Season 5” and “True Detective: Night Country” also had, and continue to have, legions of followers. And of course, “Shogun” consumed people for a good long while.
The point is that Best Limited Series has grown the past few years into the hottest and most prestigious Emmy category, and that’s especially true in 2024 with the depletion of the Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series due to the 2023 strikes and the departure of shows like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso.

Tom Hanks is the ultimate ‘good guy’ of Hollywood. The two-time Oscar winner has made a career out of playing morally decent leading men who do the right thing during a stressful situation. He has worked with acclaimed filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Robert Zemeckis, and Baz Luhrmann.
Hanks received one of his numerous Oscar nominations for the role of Captain John Miller in Spielberg’s WWII drama Saving Private Ryan. The film followed a group of US soldiers tasked with retrieving a private whose brothers have been killed in action. Nearly 24,000 industry professionals, divided among 31 professional peer groups, sit among the organization’s ranks, each member voting on specific categories. However, every eligible voter can cast a ballot in the top 15 series races: comedy, drama, limited or anthology, television movie, talk, variety special (live), variety special (pre-recorded), short form (comedy/drama/variety), short form (nonfiction/reality), hosted nonfiction, structured reality, unstructured reality, reality competition, scripted variety and game show.
According to TV Academy rules, the number of nominees is determined by the number of submissions. However, drama and comedy series are designated for eight shows each to make the final cut.
