Like horror, science fiction lends itself well to serialization. Fans of the genre love the chance to explore fantastical worlds far from our own, and once storytellers have developed a brand-new universe, those fans love having a reason to come back. From "Star Trek" to "Star Wars" (which are quite similar), from "The Terminator" to "The Thing," sci-fi franchises can spawn from anything given a strong enough premise.
Moviemaking takes time, though, and we also live in a world where projects are announced many years in advance. This can all make it frustrating to be a fan of sci-fi, often having to wait years to be able to return to a series that you love, even though new installments are constantly dangled over your head. While we're waiting for the next great sci-fi original to spark a new franchise, we've rounded up some of the sci-fi sequels that we simply...

At the most recent Oscars, Emma Stone became the lucky 13th winner of two Best Actress awards when she picked up the prize for “Poor Things”; she had prevailed seven years earlier for “La La Land.” When she won back then Stone was 28 and joined the ranks of 31 other winners in their 20s. Another 35, including Stone the second time around, have been thirtysomething when they took to the stage to collect their Oscars.
Bracketing Stone’s two wins were women who defied this bias toward youth: 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”); 45-year old Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”); double champ Frances McDormand (who was 60 and 63 when she won for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “Nomadland” respectively), 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”). While most may prioritize new additions to streaming apps each month — something we here at IndieWire take great pride in — viewers should also not neglect the fact that with each new property added, another must go. Though some apps do concentrate these expiring selections in a row on one of their menu pages, they aren’t always the easiest to find. Thankfully, we’ve done the work for you. Scouring each major platform and discovering what’s about to disappear from our watchlists, IndieWire has gathered a few selections worth your time before they go from major streamers like Netflix and Prime, as well as apps on the rise like Tubi and Kanopy.
In honor of the political conventions being hosted this summer, for our Netflix selection we’ve gone with “Born on the Fourth of July,” directed by Oliver Stone and starring Tom Cruise in an Academy-Award nominated performance...

After Joss Whedon exited Marvel despite delivering the highest-grossing films the franchise had to offer at the time, Kevin Feige moved to the Russo brothers for the next two Avengers flicks. Having previously transitioned from TV to the big screen with the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and later Civil War, it’s easy to see why they were chosen to conclude the Infinity Saga.
This decision would prove to be a huge success for both MCU and the Russos, as the Endgame duology not only made a gigantic sum at the box office, it was also critically acclaimed. But this wasn’t the case when they joined forces with MCU’s Spider-Man for a crime thriller in 2021.

The year is already an exceptionally strong year for cinematography, with several standout films that represent the art form at its apex. Perhaps what’s most welcome about these films is their variety, not only in terms of genre and tone but also budget and position in the marketplace. From the studio system, we have Greig Fraser’s extraordinary work on “Dune: Part Two,” which doubles down on the ambition and tactile detail of Fraser’s work on its predecessor (for which he justly received an Academy Award) to create one of the most flat-out beautiful epics since the glory days of David Lean. From the world of low-budget, independent filmmaking, we have “I Saw the TV Glow,” where cinematographer Eric Yue designs a meticulous and expressive visual corollary for his protagonist’s inner state.

At six of the last 11 Oscars, Best Cinematography has gone hand-in-hand with Best Director: Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity” (2014); Lubezki and Alejandro G. Inarritu for both “Birdman” (2015) and “The Revenant” (2016); Linus Sandgren and Damien Chazelle for “La La Land” (2017); Cuaron doing double duty on “Roma” (2019) and Hoyte van Hoytema and Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer” (2024). Will that trend hold true this year? (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Cinematography.)
The academy usually regards award-winning cinematography as pretty pictures within an epic technical feat of filmmaking. While great lighting and framing are laudable on their own, having a movie that looks like it was difficult to shoot goes a long way to snagging an Oscar.

By far the biggest of the May movie releases, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) is #1 in its initial week on both iTunes and Fandango’s top 10 VOD lists.
This comes 60 days after its theatrical debut, with the longer-than-average window now typical for most Disney titles after aggressive home viewing placement during and right after Covid.
What’s surprising is how easily Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” (Focus) beat out Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” among other new releases. The former just passed the $20 million domestic gross mark over its fourth weekend. “Garfield” is at $91 million, four and a half times bigger, and part of a period where animated titles dominate both on screen and at home.
“The Bikeriders” was #2 most of the week at iTunes and #2 at Fandango for the full-week chart. It’s now #3 at iTunes, behind “Civil War” (A24), surging at a reduced price after significant success at $19.99 earlier.

The movie year 2024 got a jolt of life this past month with the arrivals of rousing franchise fare from “Inside Out 2” to “A Quiet Place: Day One.” But there’s also much to celebrate on the front of original releases, from the Neon-record-breaking “Longlegs” over the July 12 weekend to, earlier in the year, more originals like “Civil War” banking for A24. Magnolia Pictures’ “Thelma,” meanwhile, also defied the odds to become a rare box office breakout from Sundance.

Recency bias is utterly common for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It may also have graduated to become a necessity considering the lack of stellar projects that the MCU has seen in recent years. However, it may have returned amongst some fans in a hilarious fashion.

Fans are currently awaiting the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, but Captain America: Brave New World, with its February 2025 release-date, is also on the slate. The movie saw the release of an exciting trailer recently which brought forth the character of Red Hulk, Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross is set to transform into, once Brave New World hits theaters. However, the trailer scene which gave fans the first glimpse at the Red Hulk, has been praised to a hilarious extent by a part of the community.

Gus Fring's war with Walter White may have blown up in his face, but Giancarlo Esposito walked away from "Breaking Bad" with a revitalized career. He's one of Hollywood's greatest working heavies, with his roles as Moff Gideon on "The Mandalorian" and Stan Edgar on "The Boys" to prove it.
As a result, he's been fancast as countless Marvel characters -- and those wishes finally came true. The recently released trailer for "Captain America: Brave New World" dropped a look at Esposito's character, and he's a ruthless, gun-toting mercenary/terrorist clad in sunglasses and a leather trench coat.
Much of the trailer includes our new Captain America, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), talking with President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford). They talk about how much supervision the U.S. government can have over Captain America's work. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Steve Rogers’ star-spangled vibranium shield in action in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – five years have passed since he handed it over to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) at the close of Avengers: Endgame, and it was back in 2021 that we saw Sam grapple with what the shield represents in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. But now, the new Cap is back – and with a new Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, too, in the form of Harrison Ford – in superhero fourquel Captain America: Brave New World, which sees Sam step into his new role proper. Major spoilers for "Civil War" follow.
Alex Garland's "Civil War" is on our list of one of the best movies of the year, and while some folks seem rather cold on the film, I think it's pretty damn good (you can read our positive review of the film right here). One of the things that fully sold me is the big, harrowing, action-packed climax. In "Civil War," a new American civil war has torn the country apart. The story picks up in the final days of the war, following a group of journalists as they drive across the war-scarred country, encountering various horrors along the way. In the film's third and final act, the journalists find themselves embedded with secessionist forces, known as the Western Forces, or Wf.
One of the biggest complaints about "Civil War" is that Garland's script remains almost maddeningly neutral in regards to the conflict.

“Thelma” (Magnolia), an unlikely action-comedy starring June Squibb as a nonagenarian grandmother who becomes a phone scam victim, has grossed about $7.3 million through its third week. Though not a blockbuster by summer standards, in the specialized world, and particularly outside awards season, “Thelma” is a blockbuster, headed for between $9-10 million domestic, theatrically. And at a time of challenge for this sector. How it got there suggests some lessons for distributors.
Something clicked here. “Thelma” debuted last January at Sundance with immediate acquisition interest, selling to Magnolia, which isn’t normally known for mid-wide-level releases.
By all indications, the plan has worked. “Thelma” is already Magnolia’s highest-grossing narrative feature in the company’s 23-year history. Adjusted, “Woman Thou Art Loosed” and “The World’s Fastest Indian” ended up slightly bigger, but both were around 20 years ago.

While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, like the 2022 winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), it can also be a way to reward a more seasoned performer. In 2024, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Leftovers”) won on her first nomination A year earlier Jamie Lee Curtis had reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and prevailed for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)
While Dern was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “Little Women” and “Bombshell” respectively.

As with leading men, the winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars is usually one of the more seasoned competitors. Of the 88 winners to date, only four Best Supporting Actor champs were in their 20s and just 15 were thirtysomething, including 2021 champ Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Messiah”). The 2024 winner, Robert Downey, Jr., was 58 when he picked up his prize for “Oppenheimer.” He joined 16 previous winners who were in their 50s when they took home the trophy. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actor.)
Eleven more men were in their 60s when they won Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards. For eight fellows, it took till they were in their 70s to win while two (George Burns for “The Sunshine Boys” and Christopher Plummer for “Beginners”) were north of 80 when they took home their only Oscars.
At the 2019 Academy Awards, Mahershala Ali won “Green Book.

Spoilers for "Civil War" follow.
Alex Garland's "Civil War" was a box office hit, but it was also one of the most polarizing movies of the year. Some folks praised the movie (you can read our positive review right here), while others seemed perturbed and even downright annoyed by it. Garland's script deliberately remains neutral about the fictional civil war that engulfs the film, primarily because the film's main characters — a gaggle of war correspondents — also remain neutral. They don't take sides; they just want to get the story. In my humble opinion, this is a feature, not a bug, but I can also completely understand why it bothers some folks.
All that said, even those who don't care for the film seem to agree there's one scene that serves as a standout moment. Midway through the picture, the main characters are captured by two soldiers. One of those...

Pedro Pascal once again wields the sword for his role in Ridley Scott’s upcoming sequel, Gladiator II. Pascal plays the antagonist in the story, looking fierce as Roman General Marcus Acacius. Fans got to see the actors in the roles for the first time when the trailer of the film was released on Tuesday. However, fans were not happy with the actor for one reason.

Fans of Pedro Pascal were furious that the actor was repeating one mistake from his most prominent role in Game of Thrones. Pascal famously played the role of the Red Viper of Dorne, Prince Oberyn Martell, in the epic fantasy series.

Having just set her second Apple x A24 collaboration, reality TV inspired murder-mystery The Wives, Oscar-winning actor Jennifer Lawrence is gearing up to work with A24 again already. Today, the company behind Everything Everywhere All At Once and Civil War announced that they've optioned the rights to Paul B. Rainey's 2023 graphic novel Why Don't You Love Me?, with Lawrence set to star and produce, and Robert Funke (On Becoming A God In Central Florida) on script duties.
Presented in an old-fashioned, newspaper style black-and-white strip format, Rainey's graphic novel follows unhappily married couple Claire and Mark. She's depressed, he's anxiety-addled, and at the head of every page the question repeats: Why don't you love me? It's a well observed if pretty grim take on modern life throughout its first half, but a killer Hail Mary of a twist mid-way through (no spoilers here!) leaves you reassessing everything that's come before.

It’s “Back to the Future” week at Netflix, literally.
Not only is Robert Zemeckis’ 1985 classic time travel comedy the #6 film at the streamer, but one of the decade’s most iconic characters is back with the just-released “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” #1 there.
Picking up theatrical franchises isn’t unprecedented for the streamer. Netflix produced the second “Knives Out” film and is currently in production on the third. Previously, the company took shots at the “Cloverfield” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series — to little impact. Netflix has continued some Tyler Perry series. But “Beverly Hills Cop” is a whole other level in terms of previous iconic success.
The 1984 original was one of the biggest comedy hits ever released, with an adjusted domestic gross of over $600 million. A fourth film has been in the works for years, with Murphy, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and Netflix joining forces to license “Beverly Hills Cop...

In 2010 the academy reintroduced the preferential ballot to decide the Best Picture winner. Over the ensuing 14 years, there has been a difference between the winners of that award and Best Director at six Academy Awards ceremonies. Prior to this such splits were fairly rare. Why the change? (Scroll down for our updated 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Director.)
At the Oscars, the winner of Best Picture is determined by a weighted ballot and the outcomes of the other 22 races, including Best Director, are decided by a popular vote. While voters simply select one nominee in those other races, when it comes to Best Picture they are asked to rank all the nominees. If one contender garners more than 50% of the first-place votes, it wins. If, however, no nominee crosses that threshold, the film with the fewest first-place votes is eliminated, with its ballots being reapportioned to the second-place pick. This process...

If you watch House of the Dragon, you know Mysaria, nicknamed the White Worm, a powerful informant who was once a slave, sex worker, and lover of Daemon Targaryen. This character has endeared herself to viewers not only because she is one of the few characters to side with the common people, but also because of the actress, Sonoya Mizuno, who played the role brilliantly.
Sonoya Mizuno's career is clearly at its peak – not only has she starred in the most high-profile TV project of recent years, but also starred in Civil War, an Alex Garland film that recently hit theaters and received much praise from viewers and critics.
But even before Civil War, Sonoya starred in a series by the same director titled Devs, and this is a project that any fan of a mix of sci-fi and philosophical reflection should check out.

There may have technically been fewer wide releases over the past six months of 2024 than the first six months of 2023, but despite lesser volume, there has been a bounty of good movies on the big screen. Some of them took a while to get to theaters following their festival premieres, while others can only be classified as studio “surprises”, and, thankfully, more than one lived up to the pre-release hype.

Though they’ve worked together only once (the animated “Happy Feet”), Australian director George Miller and recent AFI Life Achievement Award winner Nicole Kidman share a distinction this week. Both of their most recent films lead on respective home viewing charts.
For Warner Bros. and Miller, the #1 status for the newly released “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is positive news after its very disappointing theatrical results. But even more than a normal high-return PVOD release, it is available for a $24.99 digital purchase price rather than the standard initial $19.99 rental.
Kidman has provided an eclectic filmography that spans from Jane Campion and Lars von Trier to “Batman Forever” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Her latest, rom-com “A Family Affair” where she credibly plays at the age of 57 the love interest for Zac Efron, testifies to a star quality along with enduring talent. A Netflix original, it started as #1 this weekend...

Kinds of Kindness is director and writer Yorgos Lanthimos’ newest feature, fresh off the back of Poor Things success. Poor Things, labeled by many as his most accessible film to date, was nominated for an Academy Award in eleven categories and won in four. Kinds of Kindness sees him teaming back up with co-writer Efthymis Fillippou, who he has collaborated with on prior projects including The Lobster (2015), The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) and Dogtooth (2009). As can be expected, Kinds of Kindness is much more reminiscent of his older works, allowing his quirkier and less digestible storytelling to come through. A triptych fable following a man without choice who tries to take control of his life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing at sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, Kinds of Kindness...

The State of the Race
Unlike the other acting categories, it seems like the best is yet to come for the Best Supporting Actress race. So far, two of the few performances that actually have stood out include Cannes winners Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez from musical crime drama “Emilia Pérez” (though Saldaña could possibly move up categories). Then there is Emily Watson, who won an award at the Berlin Film Festival for her role opposite recent Best Actor winner Cillian Murphy in “Small Things Like These,” which Lionsgate is set to distribute.
