Cannes Critics’ Week, now in its 63rd year, is always an opportunity to explore uncharted work from new and emerging filmmakers — and away from the glitter and glitz of the Croisette, where the main competition bows. Recent Critics’ Week Grand Prize winners have included everything from “Tiger Stripes,” a Malaysian coming-of-age debut opening in stateside theaters later this month, to 2019’s honoree “I Lost My Body,” the animated favorite that went on to be nominated for an Oscar.
Coming up in the Special Screenings category of Critics’ Week, Alexis Langlois makes their feature directorial debut with “Queens of Drama,” a French pop/punk musical that brings a mid-aughts camp sensibility to Cannes this year. Below, IndieWire shares an exclusive clip for the film along with a first-look image. “Queens of Drama” premieres at Critics’ Week on Saturday, May 18, with Charades handling sales.

Shooting Clerks: Biopic about the making of Kevin Smith’s groundbreaking film to premiere this month
Kevin Smith, who has recently been approved with a SAG waiver to make his new movie The 4:30 Movie, is one of the biggest pioneers in independent filmmaking in the 1990s. He joins Robert Rodriguez as someone who was able to make a feature film on a minuscule budget with basically no crew on a do-it-yourself mentality. Both directors would gain acclaim for their efforts as both Clerks and El Mariachi won over fans at film festivals and started a revolution of non-studio productions. Smith would go on to carry over the characters Jay and Silent Bob onto his other films, including their own spin-offs, and even made two sequels to the one that started it all.

Tetris takes everything it can get out of the history of the video-game, and also, with style and personality, knows how to bring out that “something more” that turns a good movie into an excellent movie.

With its coloured blocks tumbling through the air as players frantically jigsaw them together, Tetris remains one of the world’s most elegantly simple video games. Even now, 39 years on from its creation. But not many know the story behind the game. When filmmaker Jon S Baird (of Stan & Ollie and the Irvine Welsh adaptation Filth) first heard it, after reading the script for what became his Apple TV+ film Tetris, he did a double take. “I was like, ‘Is that really true? Wow, that is crazy!’”
Crazy doesn’t even begin to cover a story that ties together the Soviet Politburo, the late media mogul Robert Maxwell, and the launch of Nintendo’s iconic GameBoy – as various interested parties all scrambled to get the rights to Tetris. Invented in 1984 by Russian coder Alexey Pajitnov, the game’s title came from “tetra” and “tennis” (one of Pajitnov’s favourite sports). Gradually,...

The Game Boy was slightly before my time, but I remember the Game Boy Color vividly. It was an introduction to handheld consoles, and a chance to finally have Mario and Pokémon in my pocket. Yet to my surprise, the best companion for long road trips was neither Pikachu nor those bouncy Italian plumbers; it was a game comprised of falling blocks and the Russian folk song “Korobeiniki.” It was Tetris.
I’d been aware of Tetris before then. It existed on my mother’s computer, but it was barely considered a video game there. Mario or Sonic were games that kids played. But Tetris was for everyone; she’d even play it on occasion. This was the power which made it the second highest selling game franchise of all-time: Everyone gets addicted to visions of falling blocks. At last, a video game movie that’s more than just a video game movie.
In theory, “Tetris” — that primitive and highly addictive block-stacking strategy game — doesn’t lend itself to the big-screen treatment any more than Rubik’s Cube or Tic-Tac-Toe might. But Noah Pink has found an ingenious solution to a classic puzzle. The screenwriter realized that there’s more to Tetris than most people knew. Namely, there’s a terrific backstory about how this Soviet-hatched computer software made its way over the Iron Curtain, and telling it could play like a Cold War thriller as three teams of Western rivals race one another to Russia to secure the rights.
In a sense, the video game movie that “Tetris” most resembles is 1984’s “Cloak & Dagger,” which made an Atari cartridge the MacGuffin that all kinds of untrustworthy people want to get their hands on. Here, it’s...

James McAvoy has said that two authors have said he was miscast in adaptations of their work.
In a new interview, the actor, 43, revealed that not all writers that he has worked with have been happy to see him cast in film or TV adaptations of their work.
McAvoy stars as Asriel in the BBC adaptation of Philip Pullman’s books His Dark Materials. Season four will be released on 18 December.
Speaking ahead of the fourth season’s release, McAvoy told The Guardian that he had never spoken to Pullman because he was worried the actor would say: ‘“Hmmm, you’re not really my Asriel!’”
McAvoy went on to say: “I’ve had that with a writer, and it’s just not nice. I’ve had that with two writers, actually.”
Asked for the names of which authors disapproved of casting, McAvoy said it was not Irvine Welsh or Stephen King.

Prime Video got off to a fast start this summer with the release of The Boys season 3 on June 3. Now, as we enter the dog days, Prime Video is set to keep the warm weather good times rolling with a new twist on an old classic. That’s right, Amazon’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by some good old-fashioned baseball.
A League of Their Own, the TV adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie, is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Like the movie before it, the series will dramatize the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which saw women playing America’s pastime while the major leagues were on pause for World War II. Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) co-created the show and will star as catcher Carson Shaw.
Other Prime Video Originals of note this month include season 2 of British comedy The Outlaws on and the Ron Howard-directed Thirteen Lives,...

Amazon’s series version of “A League of Their Own” will debut its eight-episode first season on Aug. 12, introducing new characters and stories set in the historical opening of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl).
Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” tells the real-life story of how a young boys’ soccer team was rescued from the Thai mountain cave where they got stuck for 10 days along with their coach.
Other new film arrivals include hits from earlier this summer, “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Academy Award-nominated film “Licorice Pizza” also arrives on Prime Video this month.
Freevee will also have new arrivals this month.

Fully financed by Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios, the actors join an existing cast of Annette Bening and Danny DeVito. Pine also stars in the movie, which is billed as a moving tribute to Los Angeles.
Plot details for the pic are so far sparse, but “Poolman” is crafted as a nod to famous LA noirs like “Chinatown,” “The Long Goodbye,” “The Big Lebowski” and “La La Land.”
DeBose is fresh off her awards season sweep, which included Oscar, BAFTA and SAG awards for her star-making historic portrayal of Anita in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.” Her other credits include “Hamilton,” “The Prom” and HBO’s “Westworld.” DeBose is also set to host the Tony Awards in June.

Working-titled “American Tabloid,” the series “will journey through the decades following events from a weekly publication and enter into a world where political correctness, morals and ethics are left firmly at the door,” according to Burning Wheel. Ever the provocateur, no one upends expectations quite like John Waters. The Prince of Filth, the Doyenne of Depravity, the Master of the Macabre, Waters will be lending his acting talents to the folks over at TV’s longest-running primetime drama, “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.” Over the years, the NBC franchise has developed as many a rabid devotee as Waters himself, so this special guest spot seems like a match made in heaven. Calling himself a good SAG member, Waters was tight-lipped about the episode, which airs March 26 on NBC. He did reveal that he plays a pornographer — which shouldn’t be too much of a stretch.
“I play a pornographer so I am definitely typecast,” the filmmaker said by phone. “But I love doing these shows that people don’t expect me to do. I was on ‘The Blacklist,’ I did ‘My Name Is Earl.’ I always say yes,...

Exclusive: Stan & Ollie director Jon S. Baird has been hired to co-write and direct an as yet untitled Marv Films movie, taking him off recently announced Mel Gibson-Shia Labeouf starrer Rothchild.
Matthew Vaughn’s UK outfit, known for the Kingsman and Kick-Ass franchises, confirmed Baird’s hire for an “untitled Marv Films movie” but wouldn’t reveal more at this stage.
Rumor is that Baird is in line to direct ‘Kingsman 3’ (the project is still untitled), despite Vaughn having helmed the previous films in the series. All parties are keeping tight-lipped on this, however.
It was only a couple of months ago that Baird was announced as director on hot Cannes package Rothchild, which scored multiple pre-sales on the Croisette. Widely regarded as the most iconic comedy double-act in film history, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy enjoyed a hugely successful film career which saw them become household names and as instantly recognisable as Charlie Chaplin on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond. Making over 107 between 1927 and 1950 together and separately, the duo went on to entertain millions of people around the globe thanks to their inimitable wit and perfectly timed routines of double entendre and slapstick humour, until they went their separate ways under a dark cloud.
In his new film Stan & Ollie, director Jon S. Baird, tells the story of the popular duo’s variety hall tour of Britain in 1953 which came over a decade after the two former friends had decided to part ways and pursue their own film projects separately. It could have been a standard by-the-numbers origin-story biopic — instead, Stan & Ollie looks at the legendary screen duo of Stan Laurel (Steve Coogan) and Oliver Hardy (John C. Reilly) as their career winds down. The emphasis here is on the way the funny bits in their lives come tinged with melancholy — not a bad thing, really, when you’ve actors like these who can deftly balance both comedy and tragedy. Taking a swerve taking from the cocaine cowboys of Filth, director Jon S. Baird seems to have an instinctive grasp...

In the hilarious movie comedies of the immortal Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, many of the laughs come from watching the duo teetering on the brink, unaware that they’re about to crash their car or to have a floor give way under them or to drop a piano down a very tall flight of stairs.
“Stan & Ollie,” which explores the duo’s career in its final stages — as well as their ongoing off-screen relationship — does a lot of teetering on its own, although luckily it never topples. It’s a story about the serious side of comedians that never indulges in sad-clown sentimentality. It calls upon modern actors to recreate iconic film moments without falling prey to the many potential embarrassments of such restagings. And it intelligently explores the limitations of working partnerships, not to mention the elusive line between partnership and friendship, in a way that neither canonizes nor excoriates its famous subjects.

“Stan & Ollie” marks the third feature for Jon S. Baird, after the 2008 racial drama “Cass” and the 2013 “Filth,” with James McAvoy as a bipolar junkie cop. There’s nothing in those earlier films similar to “Stan & Ollie,” which opens Dec. 28 in the U.S., but he proved the perfect match for the funny, sweet film about friendship.

It’s the final month of 2018, which means a great deal of catching up on the best films of 2018 so far, along with a handful of films in theaters to check out. This month brings some last-minute hopeful awards contenders as well as a selection of festival favorites, a few promising blockbusters, and some oddities.
Matinees to See: Ben is Back (12/7), Divide and Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes (12/7), Mary, Queen of Scots (12/7), Bird Box (12/13), Mortal Engines (12/14), Capernaum (12/14), Aquaman (12/21), Bumblebee (12/21), Mary Poppins Returns (12/19), On the Basis of Sex (12/25)
15. Vice (Adam McKay; Dec. 14)
Considering the official embargo isn’t up yet, we can’t give our reviewer’s thoughts on Vice yet, but they are… less than kind. However, I still have some morbid curiosity when it comes to Adam McKay’s cartoonish-looking depiction of the Bush era. With a physically transformative performance from Christian Bale as Dick Cheney, we’ll...

lIt’s easy to feel by the middle of September that awards season is locked up – the vast majority of contenders revealed, and the winner a good bet (it’s a decade since a movie that skipped the fall festival circuit won Best Picture). Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule,” for instance, which got a late-breaking fall release date in the hope of upending the races.
Another surprise potential to have emerged in the last few months is “Stan & Ollie,” a biopic of comedy legends Laurel & Hardy from Oscar-nominated “Philomena” writer Jeff Pope, and “Filth” director Jon S.

Stan Laurel, the slimmer British half of Hollywood double act Laurel and Hardy, was not one to wax lyrical about the art or mystique of comedy: “You have to learn what people will laugh at, then proceed accordingly,” he said, making vaudeville performance sound altogether as methodical and prosaic as shopping for groceries. No matter how ebullient their joint mugging, Laurel and Hardy’s slapstick routines were work, not play. In “Stan & Ollie,” a gently elegiac portrayal of the pair’s final comic collaboration — a low-rent music hall tour of the U.K. and Ireland in 1953 — the physical and emotional toll of that labor finally shows through their threadbare antics. Well-rehearsed performance chemistry is merely a veneer behind which the two veterans, as tenderly played by Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly, find themselves struggling to click.

If you are the reasonable type of person that always needs more John C. Reilly in your life, this fall is shaping up to be a satisfying one. Along with The Sisters Brothers, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Holmes and Watson, the actor is also leading a biopic capturing comedy legends Laurel and Hardy. Stan & Ollie, also starring Steve Coogan, will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival and now the first trailer has landed.
Directed by Jon S. Baird and written by Jeff Pope (Philomena), the film isn’t the usual entire life story of the duo, but rather depicting their farewell tour. Judging from the trailer, there’s only a bit of comedy to be had as it delves more into the drama and emotion of their working relationship. Also starring Shirley Henderson and Nina Arianda, see the trailer below.

The BFI London Film Festival has set Laurel and Hardy biopic “Stan & Ollie” as its closing night gala. The film, which stars Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as the iconic comedy duo, will receive its world premiere Oct. 21 at the 62nd edition of the festival.

Despite the pressure of a hectic schedule, the pair’s love of performing, as well as love for each other and support from their wives, endures as they secure their place in the hearts of their fans. Shirley Henderson and Nina Arianda co-star as Lucille Hardy and Ida Laurel, respectively, while Danny Huston plays comedy film pioneer Hal Roach.
