Saturday Am: Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 continues to keep the box office alive with what’s shaping up to be a record second weekend for an animated movie per industry sources with $98M+ after $30M Friday, beating Illumination/Universal’s Super Mario Bros Movie ($92.3M). Studios will report their official figures later this morning. At this level, some rival distributors believe Inside Out 2 could get closer to $600M.
This is the first time since the second weekend of Barbie (July 28-30) that a movie’s second weekend has exceeded $90M+, and Inside Out 2‘s sophomore frame even beats Mattel’s American girl which did $93M. Last year Barbie and Super Mario Bros were the only movies to post second weekends of $90M+.
The entire marketplace looks to be around $147M this weekend, which is 35% ahead of the same weekend a year ago.

The cast and crew of the upcoming film Kinds of Kindness attended the New York City premiere on Thursday night, June 20. Emma Stone, Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe, and many others graced the star-studded event at The Museum of Modern Art.
Kinds of Kindness, written and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, features three intertwined stories: a man trying to take control of his life, a policeman whose wife appears to be a different person, and a woman searching for someone with a unique ability.

[Editor’s note: This list was originally published in December. It has since been updated to include new films from the director.]
Yorgos Lanthimos’ films all look different from each other, but they feel the same. Since the Greek director has made the transition from independent Greek cinema to larger Hollywood productions, the washed-out, largely white palettes and simple trappings of his earliest films have given way to more sumptuous cinematography and staging. Even the frills of thrillers like “The Lobster” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” feel bare-bones compared to his recent embrace of the costume drama with “The Favourite” and “Poor Things,” both of which feature alternatively gorgeous and (intentionally!) garish production design and costuming.
But when you look past the budget and the aesthetics of each film, every movie that Lanthimos has made feels like they share a similar cinematic language. The characters in his films tend to communicate through stilted but natural dialogue that often tilts toward deadpan, and hide their cruelty behind politeness and social niceties.

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Drama Actress at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority of them believe the trophy will go to Anna Sawai (“Shōgun”). The other potential nominees, per our current racetrack odds, are Imelda Staunton (“The Crown”), Emma Stone (“The Curse”), Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Juliette Binoche (“The New Look”) and Carrie Preston (“Elsbeth”).
As of this writing, a leading six out of our 17 Emmy Experts predict a victory for Sawai: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Dave Nemetz (TV Line), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Peter Travers (ABC). She plays Toda Mariko, a Japanese translator who has an allegiance to Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada). Sawai shared in the ensemble prize at last year’s Spirit Awards for “Pachinko,...

“It didn’t really start as a story about family dysfunction and such. In the beginning, I was wondering about family life and parenting in general and if the way we think about it would ever really change.”
In an interview with Pamela Jahn of Electric Sheep Magazine, Yorgos Lanthimos muses on his initial thought process behind the creation of his acclaimed 2009 absurdist family drama Dogtooth. In the above quote, the director who would come to be known to English-speaking audiences through hilariously nightmarish features like The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Poor Things, and the upcoming Kinds of Kindness explains how the idea of Dogtooth slowly began to form after a conversation with some soon-to-be-newlywed friends.
In the wake of their union, Lanthimos would make some slight and friendly jabs at their decision to marry and start a family despite the high chances of divorce. A joke on his part,...

After knocking it out of the park with Poor Things last year, director Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone are back at the box office with Kinds Of Kindness from Searchlight, which looks set to shake up a sluggish arthouse market with the best limited opening this year.
The best PTA in 2024 so far is The Taste Of Things from IFC Films, which debuted at $43.4k on three screens back in February. Kinds of Kindness at five locations in New York and LA will pull ahead of that, significantly perhaps. The market’s been odd so it’s hard to say by how much yet. Tune in Sunday.
Also this weekend, Thelma, a crowd pleaser with a terrific June Squibb, launches on 1,280 screens, the widest release ever by distributor Magnolia Pictures. A24’s Janet Planet, the first feature by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker,...

After finding immaculate success with Poor Things and The Favourite, Yorgos Lanthimos returns with Kinds of Kindness. The plot of the film is quite bizarre; it tells the story of a man, where three stories revolve around him that are loosely connected with his life. You would either love or hate the movie.

However, it’s the star-studded cast featuring names like Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe that makes the project so intriguing to watch. The film itself delved into a high degree of absurdity and human vulnerability that showcased the director’s out-of-the-box vision.
Emma Stone was taken by surprise, when the film decided to use the footage for the dance scene. However, when the scene went viral on the internet, it exceeded her expectations.

‘Kinds of Kindness’ may be one of the weirdest movies you’ll see all year, but that’s not a bad thing.
Have you ever heard the term “triptych fable”? If not, you’d better familiarize yourself with the term before you head to “Kinds of Kindness,” which gets a limited release on Friday, June 21 in the United States before a wider release on June 26.
Key Details: Critics are liking “Kinds of Kindness” so far, praising the film’s caustic wit and biting humor. As a Searchlight film, the movie is bound for Hulu first. Emma Stone’s last movie for Searchlight “Poor Things” came to Hulu after a 92-day theatrical window. 30-Day Free Trial $7.99+ / month hulu.com
“Kinds of Kindness” will tell three distinct, but loosely connected stories. The first follows a man who must figure out what to do with his life after leaving a job that controls his every move.

After revealing that he felt sick to his stomach while reading the script for Kinds of Kindness, Jesse Plemons says some audience members may feel the same way when they sit down to watch the Yorgos Lanthimos film.
The movie is split into three separate stories — about a man who tries to break free from his predetermined path, a policeman whose wife seems like a different person after her return from a supposed drowning, and a woman who searches for someone prophesied to become a spiritual guide — as stars Plemons, Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau and Mamoudou Athie play different roles in each story.
Plemons told the L.A. Times that he felt sick reading the script, and at the film’s New York premiere on Thursday, elaborated, “There are some sequences in that that I feel like would make a lot of people sick to their stomachs.

The most popular thing to do when watching an anthology film is finding the connective thread. Whether they’re exercises in genre cinema or quirky odes to magazine journalism, the inherent appeal of three or more stories playing to you in bite-sized format is running your fingers along a strand that can then be tied around the whole experience like a tight bow. Well dear reader, believe me there’s enough material in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness to wrap itself all the way around your neck and squeeze. Unfortunately, a case can be made that Lanthimos suffocates the potential and life out of his baby as well.
The threads entwining here are multitude: they’re three stories of submission and humiliation in the name of love; tales of delusion and destruction; even the actors are largely recurring. Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, and perhaps most impressively, a full...

Plot: A trilogy of darkly comedic tales surrounding a businessman who can’t make decisions for himself, a police officer who thinks his wife has been replaced by someone else, and a pair of cult members on the lookout for the next messiah.
Review: Is Yorgos Lanthimos messing with us? That was the inescapable thought roaming around my head as I watched Kinds of Kindness, the Poor Things director’s latest morbid take on love, personal freedom, and those bizarre creatures known as human beings.. The answer to the question is… probably. And even if he isn’t messing with us, he knows it seems like he is.
If that doesn’t make much sense right off the bat, well, neither does Kinds of Kindness, at least not after only one viewing. Cheeky and uninterested in supplying an orthodox moviegoing experience, the film finds Lanthimos in the same mood he...

In September 2021, Olivia Colman bagged her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite having failed on her Oscar bid for “The Father” five months earlier. This made her the 16th performer to triumph at the Emmys after going home empty-handed at the same year’s Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. The release of the 2024 Emmy nominations ballots confirmed that nine of the 16 actors who lost at the latest Oscars ceremony are capable of joining Colman on said list.
Gold Derby’s current Emmy odds indicate that the man and woman with the best hopes of following in Colman’s footsteps are Ryan Gosling and Jodie Foster, who just earned their respective third and fifth Academy Award notices for their supporting turns in “Barbie” and “Nyad.” They are now generally expected to share in the experience of being first-time acting Emmy nominees thanks to his...

Brandy returns to the world of horror in A24’s new horror film which finds her character facing a truly evil mother-in-law. Watch The Front Room trailer below.
Your in-laws being the worst is the butt of many jokes, but what if your mother-in-law was actually evil? Not in a “you’re not good enough for my son” kind of way, more like “she might be stealing my child for demonic purposes” kind of evil.
Take a look at The Front Room trailer below.
The Front Room is directed by Max and Sam Eggers and yes, they are indeed related to Robert Eggers, who is getting ready to release Nosferatu later this year. It seems that all three brothers have the knack for horror, it must run in the family. The Eggers brothers are directing the film from their own script.
Here’s the official synopsis: Everything goes to hell...

Last year every cinephil seemed to be blown away by the enigmatic tale about a woman on her way to understand herself after she is brought back to life via brain transplant. Poor Things was one of the most critically acclaimed hits of 2023, if not the biggest one.
The main key to the success of this movie was, undoubtedly, Emma Stone’s obvious talent for delivering both comedy and drama performances. It is also proved by her roles in Birdman (2014), La La Land (2016), and the period hit The Favourite (2018).
If you’re a fan of the Poor Things actress who enjoys her multi-genre acting, here is some good news for you. Stone is set to star in a brand-new dramedy that is just around the corner to reach theaters, and you should definitely see it this weekend.
The new must-watch appears to be an anthology of 3 different, yet loosely connected stories.

In the wake of Inside Out 2’s massive $295M worldwide debut last weekend, Disney Head of Global Theatrical Distribution Tony Chambers kicked off the studio’s CineEurope presentation this evening thanking exhibitors in attendance for their part in the historic start — and was met in kind by enthusiastic and clearly appreciative applause. He noted too that midweek numbers have been “nothing short of phenomenal” with the global total now $380M through Tuesday.
Continued Chambers, “Everyone doubled down on their efforts to make this an out-and-out hit and every single market, every single exhibitor, and every single partner across the globe delivered this weekend.”
This was ahead of a jam-packed session that included looks at such anticipated titles as Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*; 20th Century’s Alien: Romulus; and Disney Animation’s Moana 2.

It’s almost been a year since fans experienced a major box-office face-off labeled as Barbenheimer, the clash between Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Now, it seems the public will have it again with Emma Stone’s Kinds of Kindness and Tom Hardy’s The Bikeriders.

The latter two films are expected to premiere this week, and fans will have a treat to one crime thriller movie and one comedy drama. Somehow, this showdown is reminiscent of last year’s cinematic phenomenon.

Fresh off from winning an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Poor Things, Emma Stone is back again with a new project, Kinds of Kindness, alongside Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, and Margaret Qualley, to name a few.

Who is “Kinds of Kindness,” the brain-bending new film from director Yorgos Lanthimos, for? While it may not be for those swept up by the queenly regalia of “The Favourite” or the dystopic steampunk Victorianism of “Poor Things,” remember that those films made audiences uncomfortable, too: With a wickedly perverse sense of humor that often erupts in violence. (First reactions at Cannes called it a “dark” and “twisted” return to Lanthimos’ early form.)
That’s the modus operandi of “Kinds of Kindness,” which stars Jesse Plemons, Emma Stone, and Willem Dafoe, and tells three tales of subsumed identity, cultlike bewitchment, and fleshly appetites, kinky sex, and all the gamut of self-aware Lanthimos weirdness. Here, he’s not working with screenwriter Tony McNamara. Instead, the Oscar-nominated Greek director is back behind the camera with Efthimis Filippou, his dear friend and beloved co-writer of films including the breakout “Dogtooth” (about three adult...

It’s safe to say Yorgos Lanthimos has undoubtedly entered the oblivious, self-indulgent era of his career with his latest, Kinds of Kindness, recycling a large number of his Poor Things (2023) cast for a triptych which features plenty of offbeat characteristics. Unfortunately, it’s a film which feels equivalent to being held captive to the drunken ramblings of an attention hungry child king no one has the authority to quell. Less esoteric or provocative than it is superficially outlandish, it’s a bit of a disappointment from the godfather of the Greek Weird Wave whose previous handful of English language peculiarities tend to at least incite rather than shut down conversation.…...

An Eisenbergs Seite spielt „Succession“-Star Kieran Culkin. Sie spielen zwei ungleiche Cousins, die gemeinsam nach Polen reisen, um mehr über das Leben ihrer kürzlich verstorbenen Großmutter zu erfahren. Der Roadtrip, der als Reise in die Vergangenheit gedacht war, konfrontiert die beiden mit der Gegenwart, in der sie ihre...

Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film Kinds of Kindness debuted at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival following Oscars buzz for the director’s film Poor Things. The filmmaker’s last project to premiere at the French festival was The Killing of a Sacred Deer starring Nicole Kidman, Barry G. Bernson, Herb Caillouet, Bill Camp, Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, Alicia Silverstone and more. Kinds of Kindness marks reunions with Emma Stone, Joe Alwyn, Margaret Qualley and Willem Dafoe for the director. This will be Stone’s third film with Lanthimos, and her second Lanthimos film co-starring with Joe Alwyn after 2018’s The Favourite.
The anthology movie is described as a “triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability,...

At just 35, Emma Stone now has two Best Actress Oscars – and maybe a third isn’t that far off either. Following her wonderfully emotional acceptance speech at the 96th Academy Awards, it was confirmed that the Hollywood heavyweight would be reuniting with Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos for his next film, Kinds of Kindness. The Reunion We Were Waiting For? Lanthimos and Stone last collaborated on the critically-acclaimed 2018 period drama The Favourite and the 2022 short film Bleat. The anticipation was high for their new venture. However, despite its intriguing concept, Kinds of Kindness feels more bewildering than beguiling. A...

Fresh off his Academy Award-nominated film, Yorgos Lanthimos returns to the big screen with his latest film, Kinds of Kindness. Lanthimos paired with Efthimis Flippou to write the script, which sees him reunited with Emma Stone, who recently won the Oscar for Best Actress in Lanthimos’ Poor Things, and she stars alongside Academy-Award nominated Jesse Plemons and Willem Dafoe.
The Plot
Kinds of Kindness is three films within one that follows the story of a man seeking to break free of his predetermined path, a cop who questions whether or not his wife is real upon her return from an apparent drowning, and a woman who is looking for a specific person to become a spiritual guide.

Shot while in post-production on Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness shares with its predecessor a preoccupation with the struggle to achieve autonomy in a bounded world. While the film does mark a return to the austere aesthetics of earlier Lanthimos films like Dogtooth and The Lobster, the more operative change that supersedes and to a degree governs that aesthetic recourse is the swapping out of Tony McNamara, the writer of Poor Things and co-writer of The Favourite, for Efthimis Filippou, who collaborated with Lanthimos on the scripts for The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Lobster, Alps, and Dogtooth.
Readers familiar with Lanthimos’s work will easily recognize the stark tonal divide between these groups of films. The sadism with which Lanthimos treated his early characters, the cynicism with which he characterized their capacity to change, and the nihilism redolent in his view of the world which...

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have emerged as quite the duo in recent years. The director and actress managed to turn both "The Favourite" and "Poor Things" into rare, original box office hits that also went on to garner some major awards season love. Now, they're back together again with another dark comedy in the form of "Kinds of Kindness," which is rolling out in select theaters next weekend before expanding nationwide in the coming weeks. The question is, can Lanthimos and Stone pull off a hat trick and go three for three?
Disney's Searchlight Pictures is making a couple of wise decisions regarding "Kinds of Kindness." For one, it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to build some buzz, with Jesse Plemons winning Best Actor for his work in the film. That has teed up the ball for a limited release next weekend, with Lanthimos' latest work playing in...

Before the 2024 Oscars ceremony took place, three of the four eventual acting winners had already filmed TV performances that now put them in contention for the upcoming Emmys. If Emma Stone, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Robert Downey Jr. all end up achieving TV academy recognition this year, they will set a record as the first set of three concurrent acting Oscar recipients to appear on the same year’s Emmy ballot.
Randolph, who scored an Oscar in March for her supporting turn in “The Holdovers,” is seeking her first career Emmy notice for reprising her comedic guest role of Detective Donna Williams during the third season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” According to Gold Derby’s odds, she comfortably ranks as her show’s strongest guest acting candidate, even outpacing first season nominee Jane Lynch.

Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos reteams with stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley for this bizarre triptych of stories that are simultaneously surreal, disturbing and darkly funny. Co-written by Efthimis Filippou, who previously collaborated with Lanthimos on Dogtooth, The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, the film marks a thrilling return to the director’s signature strangeness and the unsettling sensibilities of the Greek Weird Wave.
Set in present-day New Orleans, Kinds of Kindness tells three separate stories, with each cast member playing three different characters. The stories are nominally linked by a character named in their titles, though there is very little narrative overlap, only repeated echoes of themes, lines and images.

Art print by Aleksander Walijewski for Poor Things. In the last roundup, from October, three out of the four most popular posters on my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram over the previous six months were posters for Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things (2023)—two teasers and an official-release poster, all by the great Vasilis Marmatakis—which at that time was still almost two months away from its US theatrical run. So it's no surprise that the most "liked" poster since then is also a poster for Poor Things, an art print by the young, prodigiously talented Polish artist-designer Aleksander Walijewski. What was a surprise, however, is that this poster has racked up more than 10,000 likes since early February, making it by far the most popular poster ever on my Instagram, doubling its nearest competitor (Marmatakis’s original Poor Things teaser). And, making it feel as if Movie Poster of the...

In recent years, audiences have seen Willem Dafoe do all kinds of things. He’s played ‘God’ in Poor Things, responsible for the creation of all kinds of hybrid creatures. He leapt around and farted in a cave for Robert Eggers’ The Northman. Even Spider-Man: No Way Home had him talking to himself down a back alley in his return as the Green Goblin. But Dafoe’s journey into weirder, wilder roles is far from over – he’s entering Tim Burton’s world in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, joining the hordes of underworld oddities in the long-awaited sequel.

Update: It may be a stretch, but we could coin a new phrase and call this the cat days of spring. To wit: Sony/Alcon’s The Garfield Movie, which began early overseas release last month, took the No. 1 spot for Hollywood on the domestic, international and global charts this frame.
The offshore session in 60 markets was $27.1M, lifting worldwide to $152.2M. The voracious kitty had paws aplenty with overseas markets down just 3% from last weekend. The international box office cume is now $100.7M.
In China, Alcon partnered with Stars Collective to distribute the film via China Film Group and Alibaba Pictures and opened to $8.2M, starting from Saturday. In two days, Garfield has surpassed the lifetimes of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and Migration.
The tabby added such new markets this session as Poland with $2.4M, which is 45% higher than The Secret Life of Pets 2. Australia debuted...

Beetlejuice is back! Batman director Tim Burton and beloved actor Michael Keaton are reuniting for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to Burton's award-winning Beetlejuice.
Empire Magazine has shared two covers for the sequel, with the first putting the spotlight on the title character alongside stars Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, and Catherine O'Hara. The second focuses solely on Beetlejuice and was illustrated by artist Chris Christodoulou.
After an unexpected family tragedy, the movie sees three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened.
With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

2024’s Venice Film Festival isn’t far away. Last year’s event was one that was slightly cut down due to the ongoing strikes that had befallen Hollywood and prevented a number of actors from attending for the promotion of their films. The films that screened last year included David Fincher’s The Killer, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Ava DuVernay’s Origin, Michael Mann’s Ferrari and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. The line-up for films out of competition featured such big names as Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, William Friedkin, Richard Linklater and Roman Polanski.
The 81st Annual Venice Film Festival is set for August 28 to September 7. Variety is reporting that among the films that are being rumored for screenings is the Todd Phillips follow-up to the Joaquin Phoenix reimagining of DC’s Clown Prince of Crime. Joker: Folie à Deux, which co-stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, is said to...

Director Yorgos Lanthimos’ highly-anticipated anthology film Kinds Of Kindness has a full trailer ahead of its release in the UK next month.
Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone revealed their latest collaboration, Kinds Of Kindness, to the world at Cannes this month. Following 2019’s The Favourite and last year’s Poor Things, hopes are high that the film formerly known as And will continue their hot streak.
An anthology film, Stone and her fellow actors play multiple roles across three stories. We’ll be able to see the movie for ourselves in just under a month’s time when it releases in the UK. In the interim, Searchlight Pictures has released the full trailer, which we’ve enclosed below.
Here’s a synopsis, which is admirably vague in its wording:
“Kinds Of Kindness is a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life...
