Australia has juiced its tax incentives for foreign, mostly Hollywood movies and TV series that shoot locally.
The federal government has passed legislation to boost the 16.5 percent location to 30 percent. The near doubling of the location offset will apply to local Australian movies but with a catch. Producers must have budgets of at least Aus$20 million (US$13.3 million) for production, or Aus$1.5 million (US$1 million) per hour for a TV series.
That means mostly foreign and especially Hollywood productions will benefit from the increased location offset for blockbuster projects as Australia looks to be more competitive with rival international jurisdictions and draw more projects and employment to its shores.
“This is fantastic news for the industry. The 30 percent location offset will provide certainty for international productions, supporting a stable pipeline of work for thousands of Australian screen workers and businesses and triggering investment into new industry capacity and capabilities,” Kate Marks,...

Hongkong Dollar knacken konnte.
Insgesamt belegten heimische Filme im ersten Halbjahr fünf der Top-Ten-Plätze am Hongkong-Boxoffice.

The Australian screen industry is celebrating after the country’s Location Offset scheme was raised to 30%.
The legislation, which was announced in May, was made law today and officially came into effect on July 1. It raises the rebate for TV and film productions shooting in the country from the previous 16.5% to 30% and will likely trigger more overseas investment.
Kate Marks, CEO of production body Ausfilm, hailed the change, saying: “This is fantastic news for the industry. The 30% Location Offset will provide certainty for international productions, supporting a stable pipeline of work for thousands of Australian screen workers and businesses, and triggering investment into new industry capacity and capabilities.”
Australian TV and film bodies have been advocating for the rebate improvement for years, work that has become all the more vital as Australia attracts more and more international shoots thanks to generous regional rebate systems in states such as Victoria and New South Wales.

There may have technically been fewer wide releases over the past six months of 2024 than the first six months of 2023, but despite lesser volume, there has been a bounty of good movies on the big screen. Some of them took a while to get to theaters following their festival premieres, while others can only be classified as studio “surprises”, and, thankfully, more than one lived up to the pre-release hype.

The first half of 2024 saw the Hong Kong box office plummet to $81.9m (Hk$640m), down 17% year-on-year despite the record-breaking performance of local hit Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In.
The action feature, which premiered at Cannes, recorded nearly 1.6 million admissions, surpassing 2023’s A Guilty Conscience to become the highest ever recorded for a local film in Hong Kong and the second highest ever when including foreign films.
It is also the second local title to ever top Hk$100m at the local box office, following A Guilty Conscience, which hit that milestone last year and remains the highest grossing Hong Kong of all time.

Families will not stop heading to the cinemas this week as Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 storms into summer with what’s looking like a $110M-$120M 5-day U.S./Canada opening at 4,000 theaters. This as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 remains strong after a third No. 1 weekend, that pic heading to half billion stateside before the week is up.
Already Despicable Me 4 has $25.5M from 20 offshore territories, led by Australia. With the addition of 52 markets on July 3 including Mexico, Spain and Brazil, the pic’s running overseas box office could jump to a total of $75M-$80M by Sunday. Those new markets look to deliver $45M-$50M for the weekend after debuting on July 3 including previews. All in, Despicable Me 4‘s global cume is bound to stand around $200M by Sunday.
DM4 is on a staggered release pattern abroad to take advantage of holiday play.

The other night I was having dinner with a couple of industry veterans, both Oscar voters, who told me they had been talking to a top producer-financier who had seen two big studio movies coming out later in the year and both were fantastic.
The producer very enthusiastically praised Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, said Paul Mescal was terrific and Denzel Washington extraordinary in it. He also saw the new Robert Zemeckis film Here, which stars and de-ages Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, also reuniting them from the 1994 Zemeckis film Forrest Gump. Both that one and Scott’s 2000 Gladiator took Best Picture and now it appears both veteran directors will be back in the race — big time. Scott still has yet to win an Oscar, having been overlooked four times in the director race.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes is coming to physical media – including 4K disc – in the UK this September. More details here.
Littered amidst a collection of box office misfires in cinemas this summer, Disney and 20th Century Studios’ continuation of the Planet Of The Apes saga with Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes turned into a tidy success. Reviews were a little mixed for the new film, but in terms of hard cash, it’s grossed nearly $400m worldwide. That’s down on its predecessor, War For The Planet Of The Apes, but in terms of 2024 cinema, it ain’t half bad.
You can listen to the director of the film, Wes Ball, chat to us in an hour-long Film Stories podcast special episode here.
To the matter in hand, though. Disney is – thankfully – supporting Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes with a full physical media release.

One actor who was absent from those courses was Kevin Durand, who was cast for his role later than the other actors. But, as Durand said he still got his ape training through private primate tutoring sessions. The weekend box office results are in, and as we predicted earlier this week, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 was able to hang on to the top spot, earning a strong $57 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to an outstanding $469 million. To put that number in context, it’s already grossed over $100 million more than the first film did in its entire North American run. It received heftier than expected competition from A Quiet Place: Day One, which set a franchise record with an outstanding $53 million gross. Clearly, the slow start to the summer box office has turned a corner, with audiences finally hitting theatres again.
However, adult-oriented fare seems to be struggling, with Kevin Costner’s three-hour passion project, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, only earning $11 million this weekend. That’s a low result for a movie that Kevin Costner invested a significant chunk of his own money in,...

Things had been looking up for the entire month of June, and they ended on a high note with two movies making more than $50 million this weekend, the first time that’s happened since “Barbenheimer” last summer. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Despite the introduction of a new prequel to a popular franchise, Pixar’s animated sequel “Inside Out 2” held onto the top spot with another $57.4 million, down 43% from last weekend. Last week, “Inside Out 2” crossed the $400 million mark ahead of the weekend, and this weekend’s take helped push it to $469.3 million, a showing that’s on par with last year’s “Barbie” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” We’ll have to see if “Despicable Me 4” opening domestically on Wednesday puts the brakes on Pixar’s latest hit, though it won’t have any problem getting to $500 million and more.

Up against two new wide releases, Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” is looking to lead the domestic box office once again. The Disney release added another $17.1 million on Friday, down just 43% from its $30.5 million haul a week ago. Any three-day gross north of $53 million will have it rank among the ten biggest third weekends for a domestic release in box office history. It seems primed to land somewhere around seventh to tenth, with that range currently occupied by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($59.9 million), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($56 million), “The Avengers” ($55.6 million) and “Jurassic World” ($54.5 million).
The North American total for “Inside Out 2” should get past $468 million through Sunday. The billion-dollar global milestone is coming up fast; it’ll be the first of the calendar year and the first since “Barbie.”

The makers of A Quiet Place: Day One will need help keeping quiet about the film’s success at the box office, with $6.8M earned in Thursday previews. The total is a record high for the franchise and a more significant opening than some of the summer’s other blockbusters, like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $6.6M in previews. If A Quiet Place: Day One keeps up the pace, the third film in the intense horror thriller franchise could shout its supremacy with $50M for its 3-day launch window.
Elsewhere, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga hit the dusty trailer below expectations with $800K in previews. However, it’s worth noting that the target audience differs from those who rush to theaters for Thursday screenings. For many, Horizon is a Friday Date Night film or even a weekend afternoon wind-down to beat the summer...

Deadpool isn’t just another superhero. He’s also one of the biggest nerds in the world, a guy who knows nearly everything about the Marvel Universe on page, screen, and beyond. How else could he keep making these snide remarks to the camera and his countless readers? Still, in the latest teaser for Deadpool & Wolverine, the Merc With a Mouth seems to have forgotten about an important detail.
The new quasi-trailer finds the titular duo of Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Logan (Hugh Jackman) deep within the Void: a wasteland last seen in Loki‘s first season. This Mad Max-ian hellscape has also been teased in previous Deadpool & Wolverine trailers. It is here that Wolverine, deep caught up in a berserker frenzy, shouts “who’s next?” And answering the call is Sabertooth… a villain who is at last played again by Tyler Mane—a feat that...

Twisters, the Glen Powell-Daisy Edgar Jones sequel to the 1996 action movie is looking at a $50M start, per tracking, when it opens July 19. Lower end of pic’s forecast is at $45M.
Like everything in the current marketplace, walk-up business and a heat wave are driving all forecasts higher than where tracking has been spotting figures, but this movie always was figured by distribution sources as one of summer’s wins. The question is, with all the tornado warnings going on this summer, will people want to watch havoc wreaked on the screen? Well, it didn’t stop them back in 1996, when the first movie, released by Warner Bros and directed by Jan de Bont opened to $41M and went on to make $241.7M domestic.
Warner Bros. has international this time around on Twisters.

After claiming the top spot of the box-office weekend seven days ago by a whopping $122 million, Inside Out 2 held onto that spot this weekend by the slightly smaller margin of $81.2 million.
In its second weekend of release, Inside Out 2 brought in $100.0 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures as it easily remained in the number one spot of the box-office weekend top ten. In a distant second place remained Bad Boys: Ride or Die with $18.8 million. In its third week of release, the Sony Pictures Releasing product has brought in a total of $146.9 million for the studio. Meanwhile, Focus Features enjoyed the debut of The Bikeriders in third place, where it made $10.0 million over the course of its first weekend in release. Holding steady in fourth place was The Garfield Movie which made $3.6 million in its fifth weekend in release, to bring its overall total to $85.1 million for Sony Pictures Releasing.

No one saw this coming. “Inside Out 2” (Disney) fell only 35 percent in its second weekend. Following a great $154 million opening, huge initial weekdays, it’s added an estimated $100 million. That puts it at $355 million in only 10 days.
How big is that? Second only since Covid to “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021, which had December 25 and 26 in the first 10 days of its opening, eventually grossing $470 million in that time. It even edges out “Barbie” ($351 million) and bests the full run of “Oppenheimer.”
This is phenomenal. In many ways, this weekend is even more impressive than the strong debut. With less emphasis on premium screens and of course many lower-price tickets for kids, sales outpace any release since “No Way Home.” Kids also always elevate concessions, which makes the bounty for theaters even greater.
The total weekend gross will be around $152 million, an improvement of $41 million from last year and reducing the year-to-date shortfall to 21 percent.

The success of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” seems to have given the box office a much-needed jumpstart this weekend, helping a number of smaller releases. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After achieving the second-largest opening for an animated film, Disney and Pixar’s animated sequel “Inside Out 2” had a negligible second weekend drop to bring in an estimated $100 million this weekend. That’s down just 35% from its opening weekend, but more importantly, it brings its domestic total to a whopping $355.2 million after just ten days. That is, by far, the biggest success we’ve seen at the box office since last July’s “Barbie,” as it also surpassed the $282.1 million made by “Dune: Part Two,” to become the highest-grossing movie of the year.
“Inside Out 2” added another $164.4 million overseas this weekend to bring its global total to $724.4 million in two weeks. That also passes the global total for “Dune,...

The final box office results are in for the weekend (courtesy of ComScore), and Inside Out 2 officially has the biggest second weekend for an animated film of all time. The mega-blockbuster from Pixar made $100 million this weekend for a mighty $355 million domestic haul in only two weeks. Certainly, it’s proving to naysayers that Pixar’s back at the top of the animated heap after a few flops and not in danger of losing prestige anytime soon. That said, it can’t help but feel like the success of Inside Out 2 may pave the way for more and more “safe” movies, like sequels, making me wonder if the days of them tackling more ambitious fare like Wall-e are behind them. We’ll see.
Second, as we predicted, is Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which is holding up even better than expected, with an $18 million-plus weekend and a domestic total of $146.9 million.

Paging Joy! Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” has electrified the box office again, scoring a sensational $100 million in its second weekend of release. Ticket sales declined just 35% from its mighty $154 million debut, resulting in the seventh-biggest sophomore outing in history and best ever for an animated film.
Notably, “Inside Out 2” added more in its second weekend than its predecessor, 2015’s “Inside Out,” earned in its $90 million opening weekend. The only movies with bigger second weekends were billion-dollar behemoths “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($149 million), “Avengers: Endgame” ($147 million) and “Infinity War” ($114 million), “Black Panther” ($111 million), “Jurassic World” ($106 million) and “The Avengers” ($103 million). At this rate, “Inside Out 2” is barreling toward the coveted $1 billion club as well.
So far, Disney and Pixar’s family-friendly sequel has grossed $355 million in North America and $724 million globally. After eight days in theaters, “Inside Out 2” surpassed “Dune: Part II” — which generated $282 million domestically...

The visual effects in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes are truly remarkable, seamlessly blending reality and CGI to create a lifelike world. In a recent interview with Collider, director Wes Ball shared his vision for making the film look as realistic as possible. We probably had one blue screen set on the movie. For the most part, we’re out in real locations shooting with real actors. They happen to be in these funny dots with this stupid camera in their face everywhere, which they eventually kind of forget about, but you make it like a live-action movie. The...

It’s still all smiles for “Inside Out 2” as Disney and Pixar’s animated sequel continues to dominate box office charts in its second weekend. The emotional motion picture added $30.5 million on Friday, bumping its domestic haul to $285.7 million. That’s enough to surge past “Dune: Part Two” ($282 million) to become the highest-grossing North American release of 2024 so far — and with only eight full days in theaters.
What’s more, “Inside Out 2” has a shot at another record, with the potential to land the biggest second weekend ever for an animated film. That currently goes to last spring’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which coined $92.3 million in its sophomore frame. Whether or not it can get there, it’s still a huge success for Disney and Pixar and a more-than-welcome hit after the summer season kicked off with a series of underperformers.

Last weekend, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 ended the box office woes that have plagued movie theaters since mid-spring. With a $155 million domestic opening, which is the second-highest animated film opening ever, Disney’s Pixar is now back at the top of the box office heap. With very little in the way of competition this weekend, its continued run at number one is all but assured. But how much will it make on its second weekend, and how steep will the week 2 drop be? If you look back at The Incredibles 2, which is the highest-grossing animated opening ever, it fell off about 56% in week two, although I think Inside Out 2 may have a better hold.
Despite its blockbuster opening, I remember the audience’s reaction to The Incredibles 2 being relatively cool. Audiences seem to be absolutely loving Inside Out 2, with many finding the introduction of Maya Hawke...

Now 20th Century Studios has announced a date for the 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: August 27th. A press release confirms that there will be a version of the film on the 4K Uhd that will allow viewers to see the actors’ performances with unfinished effects: “Fans can delve deeper into the franchise on 4K...

Embarrassed? Hardly. Sad and fearful? No way. Joyous? Absolutely. That was the vibe on the morning of June 17 when Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman cracked open the champagne to toast those who had worked on the making and marketing of Inside Out 2, which is the year’s first box office blockbuster. “It’s been a while since we did this,” says one person attending the celebration on Disney’s Burbank lot, in reference to rough times for the once-invincible Pixar, where Pete Docter also arranged a toast.
For its part, Pixar delivered a film that has won over both critics and audiences in continuing the story of Riley, who is now 13 and must contend with a new crew of emotions invading her head in addition to the old standbys, led by Joy (Amy Poehler). And Disney orchestrated a marketing campaign that stayed on message and resonated with moviegoers around the globe.

Box Office – Chandu Champion manages decent hold on Tuesday(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Chandu Champion is putting on a fight. After growing quite well on Saturday and then further showing a jump in collections on Sunday, Monday was better than Friday due to the partial holiday of Eid. Hence, what really mattered was whether Tuesday’s hold was good because that would have been a true testimony of the film’s acceptance. As it is, films do drop on Monday, and when it’s an extended weekend, then the fifth-day drop is sometimes even bigger.
Thankfully, that didn’t happen for the Kartik Aaryan-starrer, as it has managed to bring on 3.60 crores more. This is a reasonable drop from Friday numbers of 5.40 crores and thankfully not in that 2.50-3 crores range which would have meant a low first week overall. A number like this reflects that Chandu Champion is at...
