Broadway continued settling in to its post-Tonys summer last week, with box office for most shows slipping at least a bit from the previous week and the total roster trimmed to 30 from 32.
In all, receipts for the 30 productions totaled $34,783,390, down about 7% from the previous week (one of the shows no longer on the roster was the heavy-hitter An Enemy of the People). Attendance for the week ending June 30 was 264,578, down about 6% from the previous week. Even with the small decline, a strong 93% of available seats were filled.
Some notable numbers:
Merrily We Roll Along once again broke the house record at the Hudson Theatre – the ninth time for those keeping count. With its July 7 closing date fast approaching, the revival grossed $2,321,807 for the week; The Outsiders, which won the Tony for Best Musical, set a house record at the Bernard B. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, in all its pink glory, concomitantly managed to blow patriarchal standards to smithereens and make audiences double down with laughter thanks to the comically genius duo of Ryan Gosling’s himbo Ken and Margot Robbie’s eponymous Mattel doll with an existential crisis.

If you think Ryan Gosling in all those ludicrously goofy Ken outfits (remember the Western cowboy ensemble and rollerblading getup?) was embarrassingly funny, think again.

Image Source: Warner Bros For millions of fans, this year marked a very special anniversary: It was 20 years ago that they first fell in love with Ryan Gosling. Yes, it’s been two decades since the release of The Notebook, the romantic drama that paired Gosling with Rachel McAdams as a pair of star-crossed lovers in the 1940s and made stars of both. While he’s since gone on to great acclaim in films that have been bigger hits or are considered to be more significant, Gosling will never forget how The Notebook changed his life. When we spoke to him several years ago about the film, he told us he considered it to be a special — and somewhat unexpected — experience to work with director Nick Cassavetes on the project. When the big-budget sci-fi/boxing flick hybrid "Real Steel" brawled its way into theaters on October 7, 2011, it was ridiculed by some as "Rock'em Sock'em Robots: The Motion Picture." On one hand, the $110 million-budgeted film's blockbuster pedigree of star Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy did little to suggest the film was anything more than this. But anyone who grew up gorging on Rod Serling's original run of "The Twilight Zone" in syndication or reading the novels and short stories of Richard Matheson knew there was more to "Real Steel," at least in theory, than family friendly mechanical mayhem.
Obviously, with that budget, Disney (which distributed the DreamWorks production) wasn't going to sell the film primarily on its connection to a nearly 50-year-old black-and-white television show. As for Matheson, while he's considered a god of 20th century sci-fi/fantasy/horror literature by publishing heavyweights like Stephen King and Neil Gaiman,...

Ryan Gosling had his breakthrough role in the romance The Notebook, in which he starred along with Rachel McAdams. Much like the film, Gosling and McAdams reportedly got into regular screaming matches while filming but eventually grew fond of each other and began dating.
While the two broke up after two years, an insider reported that any friendship between the two was not possible as Gosling’s wife and actress Eva Mendes disapproved of it. The insider also reportedly mentioned that Mendes felt weird about him talking about McAdams and he kept his run-ins with the Mean Girls actress short.

Besides being one of the most loved and appreciated celebrities in all of Hollywood, Ryan Gosling has also proven to be rather wittily charismatic offscreen as well. In fact, when it comes to places where he doesn’t want to overshare or let his personal thoughts out, the actor has a perfectly sarcastic way of sneaking his way out. Just like he did with Stephen Colbert recently.

Appearing on the 60-year-old comedian’s show, Gosling played the Colbert Questionert and had to answer a series of questions that would, apparently, open up his true self to the rest of the world. While he did manage to go through a majority of it unscathed, at one point, he used the most clever way to shut down Colbert, and fans have been praising him over his witty comeback ever since.

It is hard to believe that The Notebook has turned twenty this year; the film inspired us all to believe in the power of true love and a passionate embrace in the rain. Helmed by Nick Cassavetes, it was released in 2004 and was based on the same-titled novel by Nicholas Sparks, a prolific author of romance and drama books.
The Notebook is about a young couple named Allie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah (Ryan Gosling). They fell in love in the 1940s, but obstacles like their families and social statuses stand in the way of their relationship. Because of the unbreakable bond between Noah and Allie, we fully expect our romantic partners to swing from the top of Ferris wheels in order to deserve our attention.

Today marks the twentieth anniversary of The Notebook, the romantic drama which follows two young lovers who are threatened by the difference in their respective social classes. In the years since, The Notebook has also become known for the major feud between stars Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, who apparently couldn’t stand one another.
The Notebook director Nick Cassavetes was the one who spilled the beans on the feud ten years ago, and it’s an act he now regrets. “The last time I did an interview on this thing, I spilled the beans on that,” Cassavetes told Entertainment Weekly. “I regretted it. Everyone’s like, why are you telling that? I’m like, I don’t know. It caught me on a bad day, but if [McAdams and Gosling] are around, I apologize to you guys. I shouldn’t have spilled the beans.“

A double-digit slip in the Nielsen ratings notwithstanding, the Tony Awards worked their magic at the box office, with this year’s winners, contenders and show-stealers reporting big increases in attendance and receipts.
Just a few examples: An Enemy of the People, Merrily We Roll Along and Stereophonic posted box office gains in the six figures.
In all, the 32 Broadway shows grossed $37,565,097 for the week ending June 23. That’s a 2% increase over the previous week, a more impressive bump than it seems at first glance: The previous week had 35 shows, including hefty money-makers Ben Platt: Live at the Palace, Uncle Vanya and Mother Play. The absence of those shows last week went a long way in explaining the 4% drop in attendance to 282,752.
Among the numbers:
An Enemy of the People, which starred the Tony-winning Jeremy Strong, broke its own house record at Circle in the Square, taking in $1,545,913 for its final week of performances,...

The love for The Notebook still isn’t over. The movie, based on Nicholas Sparks’ 1996 bestseller, is celebrating its 20th anniversary on June 25, 2024. Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) and Noah Calhoun’s (Ryan Gosling) love story is just as beloved as it was two decades ago. From dreamy quotes like “if you’re a bird, I’m a bird” to that rain kiss that set the bar so high for future onscreen lip locks, The Notebook became an instant romance classic and catapulted McAdams and Gosling to stardom. TV Insider spoke with Sparks about the film’s major milestone, the “undeniable” chemistry between McAdams and Gosling, the shelved TV series, and if he’d ever want to see the movie (available to own now on digital) be remade. Plus, he teased his next book, Counting Miracles, which will be released on September 24. Scroll down for our full conversation. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in ‘The Notebook.

Charli Xcx Defends Taylor Swift Against Fan Vitriol ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
There’s no bad blood between Charli Xcx and Taylor Swift. However, the same could not be said about Shake It Off singer Kim Kardashian. Recently, Charli Xcx made it clear that she wants no part in the online fan fervour where celebrities are pitted against each other. The Brat artist defended Taylor Swift against fan vitriol shortly after the ‘Shake It Off’ crooner was accused of taking a dig at reality star Kim Kardashian.
It all started when Taylor Swift took to the stage on Saturday, June 22, during her second night at Wembley Stadium. During the performance, Swift played “thanK you aIMee” live for the first time since it was released as part of her new album, The Tortured Poets Department.
The song is largely believed to reference her feud with Kim Kardashian. Before singing the song, Swift told the crowd,...

Will Smith & Martin Lawrence Film Nears $300 Million Milestone(Photo Credit –Instagram)
The latest film in the Bad Boys Franchise continues to break records despite fresh competition from Inside Out 2. In its third week, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, featuring Hollywood stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, soared past Bad Boys II as the second-biggest instalment in the long-running franchise’s history, both domestically and worldwide. The film is also nearing a $300 Million milestone.
Inside Out 2, which smashed records during the second weekend, becoming the highest-grossing film in the world in 2024, did not deter Bad Boys’ performance. While the 2020 threequel Bad Boys For Life’s $424M is the highest-grossing film in the franchise, Bad Boys: Ride Or Die is eyeing a $400 Million Global run, becoming the second-highest installment in the franchise.
The slapgate controversy plaguing Will Smith did not dim his star power globally, as evidenced by the box office.

Rachel McAdams showcased her classic elegant approach to red carpet dressing at the recently concluded 2024 Tony Awards, where she was nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her role in Mary Jane.
Though McAdams’ portrayal of the title role in Mary Jane may not have wowed the Tony committee members as much as Sarah Paulson’s in the play Appropriate, I was nonetheless impressed by the former’s more sophisticated appearance for the event.

On Sunday, the 77th annual Tony Awards were held, hosted by Broadway and film actress Ariana DeBose at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The ceremony saw wins for Sarah Paulson, Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe. Several notable faces took the stage as presenters, including Angelina Jolie, Brooke Shields, Nick Jonas and even former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
This year’s nominations raised some skeptical responses over the omission of the fan-favorite revival of The Wiz and Appropriate‘s nomination for costume design. The ceremony was also deemed “dull” by many viewers citing numerous on-stage speech fumbles and a lack of stage presence from presenters and award winners.
Regardless, fans were excited to see their favorite faces take home their wins. Stereophonic and Alicia Keys‘ musical Hell’s Kitchen swept the categories with 13 nominations. Paulson returned to the stage after 13 years and snagged a win,...

Update, with League statement: Actors’ Equity Association, the labor union representing more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers in live theatre, will cease issuing contracts for work on productions in development as negotiations with the Broadway League have stalled.
“We never wanted it to come to this,” said Equity Negotiating Team Chair Stephen Bogardus in a statement, “but the wage package put across the table by The Broadway League was just plain unacceptable. Our members cannot afford to work on this contract at the proposed compensation levels over the next five years.”
The union has been in negotiations with the League – the trade organization representing theater owners and producers – since January; the current contract expired February 11. The negotiations and the ceasing of development contracts does not impact current Broadway productions or shows opening later this season.

Actors’ Equity will stop issuing contracts for work on projects in development, effective immediately, as negotiations for a new contract have stalled.
The union of actors and stage managers began negotiations with the Broadway League on Jan. 22, and the current agreement expired Feb. 11. Equity Negotiating Team chair Stephen Bogardus said in a statement that the decision came as a result of an unsatisfactory wage package put forward by the League. The League said in a statement that it had utilized federal mediation services as part of the negotiating process and argued it had been negotiating in good faith.
This is the second time Actors’ Equity has gone on strike in regards to developmental work. In 2019, the union went on a 33-day strike over this contract, which pertains to workshops and readings of shows held before potential full productions on Broadway or elsewhere. In the end, union members who take part...

The first Broadway revival of the late Stephen Sondheim’s infamous flop “Merrily We Roll Along” will win the most Tony Awards of any show at the upcoming 77th annual ceremony, according to our official odds in all 26 categories. The original production, which ran for only 16 official performances back in 1981, earned a single nomination for Sondheim’s score, but this time around it will claim six trophies including Best Musical Revival, three performance awards, Best Director and Best Orchestrations.
The blockbuster musical revival will best by two a duo of plays – David Adjmi’s “Stereophonic,” the zeitgeist-grabbing production about the tumultuous recording sessions of a band on the brink of superstardom, and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins‘ “Appropriate” – that will each win four trophies apiece. Shaina Taub’s suffragist musical “Suffs” is right behind with three victories. Nominations leader “Hell’s Kitchen” will score only two wins, while nominations runner-up “The Outsiders” will likely go home empty-handed.

When Tony voters looked at their ballots for best musical in 1960, they must have felt lightheaded. They were tasked with choosing a winner among the latest Rodgers and Hammerstein (The Sound of Music), a political drama that would go on to win the Pulitzer (Fiorello!), a new kind of psychological biography (Gypsy), and an uproarious fairy-tale comedy (Once Upon a Mattress). I’m not sure if any of the 2024 nominees for best musical will stand the test of time quite like that stunning lineup. But as was true 64 years ago, there are at least four celebrated contenders vying, all equally convincingly, for the top prize.
Part of what makes this season’s best musical category particularly tricky to predict is the volume of productions that aren’t on the ballot here: At various moments throughout the season, in which 15 new musicals opened (and six have already closed), it would have...

Mark Johnson has produced some of the most distinctive movies and TV shows of the past 40 years. Think “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Rain Man,” “The Notebook,” “The Holdovers,” “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.”
Yet Johnson was a surprise choice by AMC Networks to lead its massive investment in building out the Anne Rice literary universe in multiple TV series. AMC bought the TV rights to Rice’s literary vault of Southern Gothic vampire tales in 2020.
Four years later, AMC has two successful Rice-based series on the air — “Interview With the Vampire” and “Mayfair Witches” — and a third hot prospect in development: “Talamasca,” which explores a mysterious society within the Rice universe. Johnson had little experience with the fantasy and horror genres. But he was the perfect person to steer the Rice initiative, in part because he’s not steeped in the conventions and tropes of fantasy fiction, according to Dan McDermott,...

Ryan Gosling is unarguably one of the best actors in the entire global entertainment industry, perfect with his charismatic personality, which has established him as one of the greatest heartthrobs of all time. But that isn’t all, because he is also quite literally the ultimate Prince of Hollywood — and, for the record, it’s not just for all those fan-girlies swooning about him out there.

In fact, he has proven to be a Knight in Shining Armour to not only his wife and mother of his two kids, Eva Mendes, but also to pretty much all of his female co-stars and crew members he has worked with to date. If anything, Gosling has indeed raised the bar incredibly higher than ever before by his chivalry with nearly all the females he has worked with until now.

Broadway’s spring roster seemed to settle into a Tony season box office ranking, with the strongest of the newcomers maintaining their draws and the weakest continuing downward slides.
In that first category were repeat sell-outs An Enemy of the People, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club and Hell’s Kitchen, with both The Outsiders and Stereophonic inching onto that turf. The Outsiders was up $129,650 from the previous week to a big $1,023,827, and Stereophonic jumped $92,392 to $683,911. All five shows were well represented among Tony nominees.
A second batch of newcomers, though not hitting sell-out status, nonetheless were very strong performers during the week ending May 12. Appropriate was up more than $43,000 to $702,686, filling 91% of its seats; Mary Jane and Mother Play both held steady, with attendance around 97% of capacity; Suffs, The Great Gatsby and The Wiz each posted box office jumps of more than $100,000, settling into the impressive 91% to 95% of capacity terrain.
