Pedro Pascal once again wields the sword for his role in Ridley Scott’s upcoming sequel, Gladiator II. Pascal plays the antagonist in the story, looking fierce as Roman General Marcus Acacius. Fans got to see the actors in the roles for the first time when the trailer of the film was released on Tuesday. However, fans were not happy with the actor for one reason.

Fans of Pedro Pascal were furious that the actor was repeating one mistake from his most prominent role in Game of Thrones. Pascal famously played the role of the Red Viper of Dorne, Prince Oberyn Martell, in the epic fantasy series.

The first trailer for Gladiator 2 has recently been released, and the digital Colosseum is already buzzing with differing opinions as Ridley Scott’s film promises to be a thundering spectacle.
The upcoming movie will not feature Russell Crowe’s character, Maximus, who died at the end of the previous installment. Rather, it will carry on Maximus’ legacy and concentrate on Paul Mescal’s Lucius Verus. Along with popular actor Pedro Pascal and Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, the sequel will also star Joseph Quinn.

Yet, despite the smorgasbord of sensational battles fit, there’s a discordant note in the symphony of chaos—a rap anthem by Jay-Z and Ye, No Church in the Wild—that sticks out like a sore thumb in ancient Rome.

While it seems like Barbenheimer was one of those phenomenons that will never be replicated, Gladiator II and Wicked: Part One have a chance to bring the same friendly competition to the big screen later this year.
Both films hit theaters ahead of Thanksgiving week, making way for a Barbenheimer part two — and Gladiator II star Paul Mescal is here for it.
“Wickdiator doesn’t really roll off the tongue, does it? I think my preference would probably be Glicked if it has a similar effect to what it did for Barbie and Oppenheimer,” the Oscar nominee told Entertainment Tonight. “It would be amazing ’cause I think the films couldn’t be more polar opposites, and it worked in that context previously. So, fingers crossed people come out and see both films on opening weekend.”

Paramount has released its first trailer for ‘Gladiator II,’ the long-awaited sequel to the 2000 historical drama that took the world by storm, and it’s shaping up to have an all-star cast worthy of the legendary franchise (the original film is #36 on IMDb’s Top 250 Movies chart). Director Ridley Scott has assembled an impressive ensemble of veteran stars and rising talents to bring the next chapter of this ancient Roman saga to life. Who are the players? IMDb has broken down the trailer to give fans the scoop on the cast and characters.
Paul Mescal as Lucius
Leading the way is Paul Mescal as Lucius, the son of Lucilla, who we saw as a young boy shadowing the legendary gladiator Maximus (played by Russell Crowe) in the original film. Mescal gained popularity starring opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones in the Hulu series “Normal People,” and since then the actor has quickly become one of Hollywood's hottest young stars. More recently, he costarred with Andrew Scott in ‘All of Us Strangers’ and gained an Oscar nomination for his role in ‘Aftersun.’ ‘Gladiator II’ is a huge opportunity for Mescal to cement himself as a leading man on the big screen.
Denzel Washington as Macrinus
Acting royalty Denzel Washington needs no introduction, and the two-time Oscar winner joins the cast as the Roman emperor Macrinus. A powerful ruler of the Roman Empire should be a juicy role for Washington to sink his teeth into, judging by the way he chews up the scenery in the trailer.
Pedro Pascal as Marcus Acacius
Pedro Pascal continues his meteoric rise with a key role as Marcus Acacius, a Roman general. Fresh off the massive success of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” Pascal will lend his leading man charisma and geek cred to this sword-and-sandal epic in a supporting role as the target of Mescal’s revenge.
Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta
Joseph Quinn is best known for his stint as Eddie Munson, the beloved metalhead from Season 4 of “Stranger Things.” That role earned him the top spot on IMDb’s STARmeter for three weeks straight in 2022. He’s currently the most popular cast member from ‘Gladiator II’ on IMDb, thanks to his current hit, ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ in which he costars with Lupita Nyong’o. In ‘Gladiator II,’ he'll play the villainous Emperor Geta in a role that will likely draw comparisons to Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus from the first ‘Gladiator.’
Connie Nielsen as Lucilla
Connie Nielsen reprises her role as Lucilla from the original ‘Gladiator,’ bringing gravitas and history to the sprawling story. Her regal presence should anchor the film's family dynamics. Fans may also recognize Nielsen from her role as Hippolyta in DC’s ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Wonder Woman 1984.’
Fred Hechinger as Emperor Caracalla
Fred Hechinger, the talented young actor who had key roles in Season 1 of “The White Lotus” and in Netflix’s ‘Fear Street’ trilogy and recently starred in the indie comedy ‘Thelma,’ takes a very different turn here as the insane Emperor Caracalla. From his wild performance seen in the trailer, Hechinger will get to demonstrate his range as an antagonist.
With an ensemble blending decorated veterans like Washington and Pascal with hot new stars like Mescal and Quinn, ‘Gladiator II’ has a cast befitting its huge ambitions to revive one of cinema's most acclaimed franchises. Fans can look forward to this impressive line-up of talent facing off in the Colosseum when the film hits theaters in November 2024.

24 years after Russell Crowe delivered entertainment in the Roman Colosseum in Ridley Scott's Best Picture-winner "Gladiator," the director is back with a sequel that will be hitting theaters in November. We finally got a look at the "Gladiator II" trailer today and to say that it looks wild would be an understatement. Scott has upped the action while assembling a stellar ensemble cast led by Paul Mescal ("All of Us Strangers"), Pedro Pascal ("The Mandalorian"), and Denzel Washington ("The Equalizer").
While Scott clearly isn't going for overall historical accuracy here, these films are based loosely on what happened in Ancient Rome during these storied gladiator battles. The trailer features some particularly wild moments, including a rhino being let loose in the arena. But the wildest moment comes early when the arena is flooded to simulate a navy battle, with huge war ships and dozens of men duking it out for the Romans to watch.

Quick, find the nearest field of wheat and run your hands through it as cinematically as possible! This morning, Paramount Pictures saw fit to drop the first official trailer for director Ridley Scott's epic sequel "Gladiator II" and, yes, we are very entertained. Set decades after the events of the 2001 original, the follow-up film is set to pick up roughly where Russell Crowe's Roman general-turned-freedom-fighter Maximus Decimus Meridius left off, who valiantly gave his life in the arena to end the reign of terror enacted by Joaquin Phoenix's unhinged Emperor Commodus. We'll now be looking through the perspective of up-and-coming star Paul Mescal as Lucius, who appears to be gearing up for a violent arc similar to the one the legendary Maximus navigated all those years ago. But trailers can be misleading, as we all know, and something tells us that there's much more than meets the eye here.

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2024, Cillian Murphy, 47, won for his portrayal of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” He was the sixth Best Actor winner in a decade to prevail for playing a real person after Will Smith (“King Richard”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Gary Oldman (“The Darkest Hour”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), and Eddie Redmayne;. Gladiator doesn’t seem like the type of movie that demands a sequel. Sure, it won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and sure, director Ridley Scott is still going strong more than two decades later. But the story of Maximus had a definitive arc and ending. As portrayed by Russell Crowe, the general-turned-gladiator Maximus died after leading a revolt against Rome and the corrupt Emperor Commodus (a wild Joaquin Phoenix).
So what is the point of a sequel 20 years later? Yes, the empire limps on for a few more centuries, but that’s not enough to justify a direct sequel to a standalone story from the previous film.
Fortunately, the trailer for Gladiator II clarifies the connection between the first film and the sequel. The trailer opens with narration from Lucius (Paul Mescal), the nephew of Commodus in the original movie and former heir of the Empire before the death of his father.

It’s a bad time to be related to a muscly Paul Mescal – the new Gladiator 2 trailer sees the Normal People star out for revenge.
We’ve finally got our first peek at Gladiator 2, and it looks nuts. The colosseum’s been transformed into a boating lake, there’s a siege going on at a big city, and the Roman empire might just be about to collapse.
Oh, and it seems Ridley Scott’s been on a shopping spree at the local zoo. As if the reported showdown with a gaggle of baboons wasn’t enough, now it looks like poor Paul Mescal’s been sent to fight a rhino.
But don’t take our word for it (we might have just hallucinated it anyway). Take a look at the Gladiator 2 trailer below:

"The greatest temple Rome ever built - the Colosseum. Because this is what they believe in... power." Yes it is time. Paramount Pictures has finally unveiled the first official trailer for Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, his long-awaited sequel to the Oscar-winning classic Gladiator from 2000. This legacy sequel is actually a direct sequel to the original - following Lucius, the son of Maximus's love Lucilla, after Maximus's death, who ends up fighting in the Colosseum as well. This looks like a properly glorious sequel - even bigger (and hopefully better) with battles galore, involving water and a rhino and so much more. Starring Paul Mescal as Lucius (played by Spencer Treat Clark in the first movie), Denzel Washington as Macrinus, Pedro Pascal as the Emperoro Marcus Acacius, Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, plus Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Peter Mensah, and Derek Jacobi. Even after a 24 year wait for this sequel,...

The time has finally arrived for a real look at Ridley Scott‘s anticipated sequel to his 2000 Best Picture winner. After months (and months) of buzz, thanks to the huge budget, it looks like Ridley Scott’s sequel gamble has paid off in a big way. The footage here is nothing short of incredible, with sharks in the coliseum, massive battles, Denzel Washington being ultra-Machiavellian, and Paul Mescal’s Lucius going up against Pedro Pascal’s Marcys Acacius in the arena. Chills people. Chills! The cast includes Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, with Connie Nielsen and Denzel Washington. The screenplay was penned by David Scarpa.
Here’s the official synopsis from Paramount Pictures, who are releasing the film on November 22nd:

Footage from "Gladiator II" was shown at CinemaCon 2024, where /Film's Ryan Scott described the five minutes of unfinished footage as "nothing short of spectacular." Since then we've had to make do with the tidbits of information that have been released for the film — though details have been somewhat sparse so far. We do know "Gladiator II" is set 25-30 years after the first film, and that the cast is about as stacked as they come. Paul Mescal stars as Lucius Verus, son of Roman Empress Lucilla, who's played by a returning Connie Nielsen. Alongside Mescal, Denzel Washington will no doubt...

As anticipation builds for Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II,” set for release on November 22, 2024, new details about Denzel Washington’s role in the sequel have emerged, drawing intriguing parallels to a key character from the original film.
Washington is set to play Macrinus, a former slave who has risen to become a wealthy and influential arms dealer and gladiator sponsor. This character description bears a striking resemblance to Antonius Proximo, portrayed by Oliver Reed in the 2000 Oscar-winning “Gladiator.”
The sequel, which takes place years after the events of the first film, centers on Lucius (Paul Mescal), the grandson of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Lucius finds himself thrust into the world of gladiatorial combat after his home is invaded by General Marcus Acacius, played by Pedro Pascal.
Macrinus’s position as a gladiator sponsor places him in a pivotal role, potentially shaping the destinies of both Lucius and Acacius as they navigate the treacherous arena.

The new Barbenheimer is approaching fast: in November 2024, Jon M. Chu releases musical fantasy Wicked soon after Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, the long-anticipated sequel to his iconic 2000 historical drama. For Scott, making the second installment was a big deal — first, because he’d always had it in mind, and second, because back in the day, he was robbed of his franchises by Hollywood… Twice.
Ridley Scott Lost Two Iconic Franchises
Without a doubt, Ridley Scott is up there among the greatest movie directors of our time. The man has delivered multiple instant classics and established some of the greatest franchises… However, he was twice ripped off of them by Hollywood, and despite many years having passed since then, the director is still bitter about it.
“I’m the author of two franchises. Most directors in Hollywood—certainly, let’s say, at my level—don’t let that stuff go.

Even Hollywood’s biggest stars may sometimes need to get away from Tinseltown and all that talk about box office declines, streaming challenges, and the threats of TikTok and generative AI.
No surprise then that the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) has found passionate fans among the A-list with its offering of summer refreshment, like a cocktail of positivity away from all the negativity.
In fact, Kviff has over the years often turned out not to only be a film fest, but also a big love fest for famous faces.
The late Oscar-winning Czech directing legend Milos Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus, The People vs. Larry Flynt) had made it his mission to promote Kviff in Hollywood after its reboot in 1994 following the November 1989 Velvet Revolution that ended Communist rule in what was then Czechoslovakia country and the Czech Republic and Slovakia becoming independent states as...

The State of the Race
Like it or not, the state of the movie business is at a point where the Best Adapted Screenplay conversation starts around which major sequels are Oscar contenders. Even with its tepid critical response, it is hard not to throw “Inside Out 2” on the list when the first one received a Best Original Screenplay nomination and won Best Animated Feature in 2016. Joseph Quinn may be on a career high after his breakout role on Stranger Things, but after being in the presence of bona fide superstar Taylor Swift, he admits things quickly became awkward.
While speaking on Monday’s episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, the A Quiet Place: Day One actor reflected on any “cringe” moments he has experienced, pinpointing the time he met Swift and fumbled his words.
“I met Taylor Swift once, and I said, ‘You’re Taylor Swift.’ She was very funny,” Quinn said. “She said something nice about like the show [Stranger Things], and I said, ‘Oh, thanks. You’re Taylor Swift. I meant it as a compliment.'”
However, when looking back Quinn admits, “I remembered thinking, ‘That was fucking… that was stupid.’ But she was very good-humored about it.”
He then jokingly said he and Swift are on “great terms,...

Russell Crowe found worldwide fame after he starred in 2000’s Gladiator movie, but along with it was an unforgettable and perhaps traumatic event of his life. Being an A-list actor in Hollywood at the time made him a major target of a terrorist group named Al-Qaeda.

Even years after the threat, Crowe was still clueless about what happened or what it was all about. He just knew he was surrounded by security guards wherever he went for about two years.

Russell Crowe has starred in some of the most memorable and acclaimed films of the 90s and early 2000s. Films like Romper Stomper, L.A Confidential, and The Insider made Hollywood take great notice of the actor’s capabilities. Actor Paul Mescal was the last person who fans would have dreamed of leading Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II but it has become a reality. The actor, known for his role in Aftersun and Normal People, was selected after only a 20-30-minute Zoom call with Scott, according to Mescal.
The new promotional images from the film indicate a body transformation for the actor as he looks bulky and warrior-like. The film is set during the Roman Empire and Mescal reportedly wanted to make sure he avoided being considered a s*x symbol in the film, the way Brad Pitt was after Fight Club.
