Sale talks surrounding Pluto began before the Skydance merger deal won approval from Paramount executives.
A new age is dawning for Paramount Global. BET and its sibling streamer BET+ are up for sale, and whoever buys them could have a huge opportunity to super-serve Black audiences.
As streaming continues to expand, inevitable and important questions about access and representation must follow. A 2023 survey found that Black viewers see better representation on linear TV than on streaming services, but new data from Horowitz Research shows that Black audiences are not averse to streaming by any stretch. Paramount owns a host of cable and streaming properties, and not all are likely in the company’s long-term future.
There have been more than a few TV-worthy twists in the Paramount-Skydance merger, but it appears that the drama is mostly over. On Monday morning, the two sides announced that they had officially agreed on the terms of a deal that will see Paramount and Skydance become fully integrated, once regulators have signed off. New Paramount CEO David Ellison and his oncoming president Jeff Shell plan to look for $2 billion in cost cuts at the company to improve its bottom line, and that could mean selling off different parts of Paramount in order to streamline it for the future. However, before they take over, the two incoming execs would not mind seeing the current Paramount leadership say goodbye to a few non-core assets as well.

The growing chasm between HBO and Max has widened to the point where you could fit a Mountain of Entertainment(™) through the two. But why would you want to?
Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global are engaged in talks to combine streamers Max and Paramount+, according to CNBC. Such a merger could be the lifeline Paramount+ so desperately needs and would bring HBO/Max closer to the magic 200-million-subscribers mark; Paramount+ has more than 71 million global streaming subscribers, Wbd’s direct-to-consumer platforms combine for about 100 million subs (most are Max). Or it could be a giant mistake that further dilutes the perceived quality of the former HBO Max.
When reached by IndieWire, spokespeople for both Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery declined to comment on the CNBC report. The Max/Paramount+ conversations are not totally out of the blue. For a minute in December 2023, it looked like Wbd and Paramount Global might merge entirely.

Updated: Shares of Paramount Global sprang to life ahead of the July 4 holiday on a renewed agreement between Skydance Media and controlling shareholder Shari Redstone that would merge Skydance and Paramount.
On Wednesday (July 3), Paramount’s stock opened up 13% to over $12/share, its highest levels in nearly a month. However, the price drifted down throughout the morning to close at $11.46/share (up 6.9%) for the shortened session that ended at 1 p.m. Et. Last month shares had tumbled after Redstone nixed Skydance’s previous offer on June 11, falling to all-time lows of under $10.
The bump comes on the news Tuesday that Redstone reached a preliminary deal with David Ellison’s Skydance production company — three weeks after the previous talks fell apart. The basic structure of the pact is the same: Skydance would buy out National Amusements Inc. and then combine Paramount and Skydance, with nonvoting Paramount Class B shareholders entitled to...

Skydance Media has reached a tentative deal to acquire National Amusements, the majority shareholder of Paramount Global, as part of a broader strategy to merge the two entertainment businesses.
On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal said discussions between Skydance Media and National Amusements owner Shari Redstone had reignited, about three weeks after the newspaper reported that talks between the two sides had broken down.
At the time, the Journal said Redstone and Skydance Media could not agree on whether their deal should be subject to a vote by Paramount’s minority shareholders. Redstone supported the vote, while Skydance did not, according to reports.

In a holiday week shocker, Skydance Media and Shari Redstone’s National Amusements Inc. have quietly renewed acquisition talks and have reached a tentative agreement to acquire Paramount Global.
That deal will now be reviewed by Paramount Global’s special committee of its board of directors that has steered the media giant through its roller coaster ride of M&a activity and speculation since late last year. The new pact with David Ellison’s Skydance Media and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital is believed to include a 45-day period in which Paramount and Nai, which owns Redstone’s controlling share in Paramount, have the right to shop around for a bidder to match the Skydance terms.
News of the renewed talks was first reported Tuesday by the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

After several stops and starts, Paramount Global appears to be renewing its effort to sell off its BET Media Group assets.
The Shari Redstone-controlled media company is in talks with Cc Capital chief Chinh Chu, whose private equity firm is backing BET president Scott Mills in a bid for the BET assets, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. A rep for Paramount declined to comment and Cc Capital did not reply for comment.
The unit — comprising the BET channel, streamer BET+ as well as VH1 and BET Studios — has been up for sale multiple times in the past several years as Paramount has reevaluated which properties to keep or sell as it navigates changing corporate strategies and executive turnover. Mills, who joined BET in 1997, has served in numerous leadership roles at its parent company and gained oversight of VH1 in 2022.

Paramount Global stock jumped 6% on Tuesday on the latest report the company has resumed talking to potential buyers of select assets after pausing the divestments during ultimately fruitless merger talks with Skydance Media.

After more than a year of keeping BET Media Group on the market, it appears Paramount Global may be ready to sell.
The powers that be at Paramount Global are searching for savings everywhere, these days. The company wants to cut as much as $500 million from its balance sheet as it tries to plan its next steps, and one of the options available to it is to divest itself of assets like its linear TV channels. A new report from Bloomberg indicates that sale talks surrounding BET have begun again, as the channel’s current CEO Scott Mills has rekindled his interest in owning the channel.
Key Details: Mills is partnering with Cc Capital to try and acquire BET. An offer of around $1.7 billion has been extended for the channel. Media mogul Byron Allen and BET co-owner Tyler Perry have had interest in the past, but have seemingly dropped out of the process.

BET wants some Emmys.
In a year where major streamers and legacy networks dominate the Emmy conversations, BET Media Group, which includes BET+ and BET Studios, has had a record-breaking year for its critically acclaimed content, such as Lee Daniels’ racy sitcom “The Ms. Pat Show,” the drama thriller “Average Joe” and the dark comedy “Diarra From Detroit.” All in all, the legacy broadcast media network has submitted in over 35 Primetime Emmy categories, the most in its history.
BET+ surprised many in 2022 and 2023 when it picked up back-to-back nominations for “The Ms. Pat Show” director Mary Lou Belli. A veteran in the TV business, she’s helmed notable episodes of “Sister, Sister,” “Monk” and “NCIS.” After dropping its fourth season on May 23, Belli is up for consideration once again for the premiere episode “I’m the Pappy,” alongside co-creator and showrunner Jordan E. Cooper for “The Book of Denise” episode.

Exclusive: BET+ has picked up darkly comedic drama series Average Joe, headlined by Deon Cole, for a second season.
Created by Robb Cullen, Average Joe was released June 26, 2023 to strong reviews (86% on Rotten Tomatoes), quickly becoming the #1 scripted drama series on BET+ in its debut week.
Season 2 is slated to begin production in late 2024 in South Africa. In an unusual move for an ongoing original series on another streamer, Season 1 of Average Joe will be made available on Netflix this summer, sources said. That would give the comedic drama exposure and raise awareness ahead of its second season on BET+.
Inspired by Cullen’s life, Average Joe is set in “The Hill” district of Pittsburgh. Blue-collar plumber Joe Washington (Cole) discovers his recently deceased father lived a secret second life and stole millions of dollars from dangerous people just before he died. Now those people think Joe knows where the money is.

Tyler Perry and BET are continuing their fruitful business relationship.
The cable outlet and Perry have signed a new, multi-year content partnership that will have Perry create and produce hundreds more hours of programming for BET and its streaming service, BET+. The deal, which runs through 2028, extends and builds on a relationship that dates back to 2017, when Perry entered into a similar partnership with the conglomerate then known as Viacom (now Paramount Global).
Perry also expressed interest in buying a majority stake in BET when Paramount considered spinning it off last year. The company ultimately decided not to go forward with a sale, and Perry expressed disappointment with the bidding process.
That did not, however, prevent Perry and BET from continuing their partnership. The new deal includes renewals for BET series Sistas, The Oval, Assisted Living and House of Payne and BET+ shows Zatima, Ruthless, All the Queen’s Men and Bruh.

The billionaire owner of Allen Media Group pursued BET over the summer, but Paramount pulled the asset from the table.
The word “no” can serve as a goad for many, but especially for billionaires. It often turns out that the best way to get more money from a wealthy mogul is to pretend that you don’t want to sell them the thing that they’re interested in, and Paramount may have followed that strategy to the letter this year. New reports indicate that Byron Allen, founder of Allen Media Group, is in hot pursuit of BET Media Group once again after Paramount had toyed with the idea of selling to him earlier this year.
Allen has reportedly offered Paramount $3.5 billion for BET Media Group, which includes BET and VH1. Reports of his renewed interest surfaced after the possibility of BET’s sale to a management-led investor group arose this week.

When Tyler Perry and BET partnered in 2019 to create content for both the cable network and its new streaming service, BET+, they had a clear goal: Cooperation, rather than competition. BET CEO Scott Mills compares BET’s relationship with the “Madea” creator to how Pixar changed the animation game for Disney.
“If BET, by analogy, is to Black viewers what Disney is to families, then when Tyler Perry came up on the scene, it was similar to when Pixar came onto the scene,” Mills said. “Disney had an animation business that was just shocked by the extraordinary success of Pixar. Disney ultimately had this great vision that as opposed to competing with Pixar, they should bring Pixar onto their side.”
Instead of dividing and conquering, they would join forces to build and expand together. And according to Nielsen’s ratings among Black viewers, that has been a recipe for success.

Paramount Global has been looking to cash in its chips for BET for most of 2023. Now, the media conglomerate is going to have to decide just how much it is willing to let the brand go for. In March, it was originally reported that the company was interested in selling Black Entertainment Television Group — which includes cable channels BET and VH1, as well as the BET+ streaming service - after turning down a $3 billion offer for Showtime. Since then, numerous people have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring the brand from media mogul Byron Allen to Shaquille O’Neal and 50 Cent. However, the candidate that emerged as the most likely new owner is one of the current owners.

The 2023 BET Awards scored an audience of 2.8 million viewers, up 2% from last year’s ratings.
Sunday’s ceremony, which celebrated 50 years of hip hop, drew in 1.8 million total viewers on BET alone, with its viewership culminating from its live simulcast across Paramount networks BET, BET Her, Comedy Central, MTV, MTV2, Pop, Nick at Nite, TV Land and VH1, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day figures.
Culture’s biggest night also held down its top spot as the most-watched cable award show among adults 18 to 49. In conjunction with the 2023 show’s success alongside the “NAACP Image Awards,” BET secured itself as hosting the top two cable award shows for Black viewers in 2023.
