Alfonso Cuarón, the Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker known for the likes of Gravity, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Roma, will receive a lifetime achievement award at the 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland.
He will receive the honor, a tribute to “film personalities with extraordinary careers,” on Sunday, Aug. 11 in the Swiss town’s Piazza Grande after audiences can catch a panel conversation with him earlier in the day.
“From low-budget films in Mexico to blockbusters in Hollywood, from adaptations of Charles Dickens, P.D. James or Harry Potter to the audacity and delicacy of modern classics, such as Y tu mamá también (2001), Gravity (2013) and Roma (2018) — which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival — Alfonso Cuarón has embodied the true spirit of a chameleonic contemporary artist able to master any assignment,” Locarno fest organizers said. “Though known for the dynamic long-takes that characterize the...

Established in 2008 with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe took the world by storm. The compelling storyline with extraordinary superhero action saving the day, and their idea of interconnecting films throughout multiple franchises was something that the world was missing back then.

With the MCU hitting its peak in 2019 with Avengers: Endgame, Feige’s superhero universe shattered almost every box office record imaginable. The success has also garnered immense critical acclaim, where they praise the superhero franchise for crafting one expansive universe that consists of all of their favorite comic book names.
However, the President of Marvel Studios was taken aback when Michael Giacchino approached him with arguably the weirdest pitch of them all. The Alias composer pitched the idea of making a TV series based on an obscure 1972 character, Werewolf By Night, that...

Deep-cut fans of Marvel Comics have likely begun several pertinent conversations with the following question: if you could adapt any Marvel character, no matter how obscure, into a live-action feature film, which one would you choose? These conversations were mostly held during the 2010s heyday of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, when most of the company's star characters had already been given the cinematic treatment. Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, X-Men, and the Avengers were all taken, and even some more obscure characters, like the Guardians of the Galaxy, were being given the A-list polish, so Marvel fans had to get creative in their nerdy, self-indulgent postulations.
Personally, I have already written a treatment (which I sent to Marvel many years ago) for the obscure MarvelUK character Motormouth, a foul-mouthed punk rock teen (real name: Harley Davis) who finds a pair of magical sneakers that allow her to leap between dimensions. I...

Both tequila and mariachi bands originate from the Guadalajara region of Mexico. So do actor-filmmaker Gael García Bernal and Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toros, who founded the Centro Internacional de Animación (or El Taller del Chuco) animation studio, financed with his alma mater, the University of Guadalajara, in 2020. The metropolitan area’s high-tech movie theater Sala Guillermo del Toro is also named in his honor.

When Empire caught up with Eric Kripke for this month's issue of the magazine, The Boys' showrunner revealed that he'd already gotten his superviolent superhero series' ending all planned out. "Whenever that last episode occurs, I know what happens," he shared. Well now we know when exactly that last episode will occur. Taking to Twitter/X earlier today, Kripke confirmed that the battle between Karl Urban's Billy Butcher and Antony Starr's Homelander will come to "a gory, epic, moist climax" with its fifth — and now final — season. Check out the announcement below;
Kripke's announcement comes on the same week that The Boys Season 4, described by Empire's own Amon Warmann as the show's "best season yet", premieres on Prime Video UK. In this latest run of episodes from the R-rated, claret-soaked, and ever-so-sweary satire, The Boys are out to stop not only Homelander, but also Oval Office-bound head-popping super...

Get yourself a blood-spatter poncho and a glass of Stillwell’s milk because Amazon is superhero-landing with some big news for fans of The Boys. After multiple seasons of ultra-violence, false hero worship, skull-crushing sexual acts, and countless civilian lives lost, The Boys is ending with Season 5 at Amazon. The Boys showrunner, Eric Kripke, announced the fan-favorite show’s ending on Twitter, saying, “Season 4 premiere week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the final season!” Kripke noted in the wake of glowing reviews for Season 4 arriving online. “Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final Ok from Vought. Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax.”
Kripke’s post includes a redacted script page from Episode #408. Blackout lines obscure most of the page’s content. Still, the final line on the document reads, “See For Our Final Season,...

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever finally brought Namor the Submariner into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the character underwent some significant changes, with Atlantis swapped out for Talokan and his origin story rooted in Mayan legend.
While not everyone was happy about that, it went a long way in helping to differentiate Namor from DC's Aquaman.
Thanks to Marvel Studios concept artist Phil Saunders (who has spent the past year working on Disney's Tron: Ares), we have a new look at some sequences which didn't make it into the Black Panther sequel's final cut.
That includes a clash between Ironheart and Namora. "The script originally called for an extended battle between [Riri Williams] and [Namora] that would have taken them underwater," Saunders says. "It was inevitably cut to keep the focus on [Shuri] and [Namor], but gave me the opportunity to paint some dynamic shots."

The Boys is one of the most popular superhero series in the world at this moment. The twisted take on the superhero genre, adapted from the comic book of the same name, became a major hit for Amazon Prime and a series that has pushed the boundaries of what can be shown on TV in more ways than one. The series is expecting the premiere of its fourth season in June, while its first and so far only spin-off, Gen V, is in the process of filming its second season. But, there is another spin-off project planned – The Boys: Mexico (tentative title) – but based on the most recent reports, the project is still some time away before being made into a series.
Seeing how popular the franchise is, we’re not really surprised that more spin-offs are being worked on and the only bad news here is that the Latin American spin-off,...

We're now just three weeks away from the season 4 premiere of The Boys, and Prime Video has shared a new still spotlighting the reshuffled members of the "superhero" team known as The Seven.
The updated roster (it's a running joke that there's never actually seven of them) consists of original members Homelander, The Deep, A-Train, and Black Noir (with a different character under the mask), along with two new recruits.
As you might expect, these ladies turn out to be every bit as unhinged/amoral as pretty much every other Supe that's been part of the team, but one, in particular, might be the most dangerous of all: The smartest person in the world, Sister Sage (Susan Heyward).
"It's such a funny power," showrunner Eric Kripke says of the scheming Supe in a recent interview with EW. "A lot of superhero worlds have that character. Whereas most of them are usually really reedy white dudes,...

‘The Boys: Mexico’: Showrunner Eric Kripke Says Gael García Bernal’s Spinoff Is Still “A While Away”
“The Boys” already had one successful spinoff with last year’s “Gen V,” so when will the next one show up? EW reports that it might take some time before Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna‘s “The Boys: Mexico” become official. But based on what showrunner Eric Kripke says about the series, it’ll be worth the wait.

It was announced last year that a new spin-off of The Boys was in development from Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, with Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal set to executive produce. Dubbed The Boys: Mexico, the series is set to join the ever-growing superhero franchise, but before you start getting too excited, we’re still a long way off from seeing it on our screens.
The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke spoke with Entertainment Weekly to give an update on the spin-off series. “They are still making the deal with the writer for the pilot,” Kripke said. “He has an amazing pitch, and we all giggle and think about how fun it would be. But there are a lot of hurdles for that show before it’s a real show. He’s got to write an amazing pilot, he’s probably got to write an amazing episode 2. I think he can and he will,...

Adam Sandler and Josh Safdie’s follow-up to 2020’s Uncut Gems is still in the works, following several delays and setbacks.
Here’s a project that we’ve been reporting on for years now and whilst this story won’t confirm anything, it’s fresh news that claims that the movie is still alive. The movie in question is Josh Safdie’s untitled baseball film which will star Adam Sandler.
The project is one of interest because it will mark the pair’s next collaboration after 2020’s Uncut Gems, the nail-biting drama that was bought to us courtesy of Netflix and had audiences everywhere shifting uncomfortably in their seats for the majority of its runtime.
Last year’s strikes were the main culprit for this one not happening sooner. The film is said to focus around baseball and as such, needs to shoot during the sport’s season. Last year...

Before making Joachim Trier’s 2021 hit The Worst Person in the World, Renate Reinsve was about to jack it all in. Three years later — after A Different Man, with Sebastian Stan, Another Life, with Gael García Bernal, and Handling the Undead, a chiller from Let the Right One In writer John Ajvide Lindqvist — she now finds herself not just back in Cannes but doing double duty at the Sundance, Berlin and Tribeca film festivals (“It’s a running joke that I have two movies everywhere”). Reinsve takes the lead in the Swedish drama Armand, directed by Ingmar Bergman’s grandson Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel.

Exclusive: A longtime passion project imagined by the late Steve McQueen has been revived.
Two decades after the iconic actor’s son Chad McQueen and family friend/Warner Bros exec Lance Sloan began development on the film Yucatan, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer has been set as the screenwriter of the project that is now in early development at Netflix, we understand. Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey remain attached as producers under their Team Downey banner.
Both Netflix and Team Downey declined to comment.
McQueen’s vision involved a story about a renegade salvage expert’s search for Mayan treasure in the Yucatan Peninsula with him taking the lead. Details regarding where Dunnet-Alcocer will take the story are under wraps. Mexican writer Dunnet-Alcocer is working fresh with McQueen’s script, which was discovered years after his 1980 death as part of a collection of notebooks he left behind in a pair of trunks.

This post contains spoilers for both "Challengers" and "Y Tu Mama Tambien."
It's only its first weekend in theaters, but "Challengers" has already gotten everyone talking. There's just something captivating about a love triangle where all sides touch, and it's even more captivating when all that lust and jealousy get boiled down to a single heated match of tennis. There is no greater upping-the-ante movie moment than when Patrick (Josh O'Connor) subtly signals to Art (Mike Faist) during the game that he's recently slept with his wife Tashi (Zendaya). There've been plenty of fictional sports matches where a mid-game twist got everyone on the edge of their seats, but "Challengers" casually outdid them all.
What made "Challengers" truly special is Art's reaction to Patrick's reveal: he simply says, "F**k off." It's a line that could easily have been delivered with straightforward rage, but Faist throws some bemusement into the mix,...

Exclusive: Netflix’s film division has preemptively acquired a pitch for an untitled law school thriller from Holland, Michigan‘s Andrew Sodroski, sources tell Deadline.
Netflix could not be reached for comment. While plot details are unknown at this time, the pitch is said to be described as a contemporary spin on The Firm meets The Wolf of Wall Street. Ben Pugh and Peter Dealbert will produce for the L.A. and London-based management and production company 42.
Most recently, 42 worked with Netflix as a producer on its sci-fi actioner Outside the Wire starring Anthony Mackie, which debuted at #1 and was watched by 66 million households in its first quarter on the platform. Sodroski’s pitch marks 42’s second pre-emptive sale in a row on the heels of The Bet, a thriller spec from Enemy‘s Javier Gullón that sold to Warner Bros for what we’re told was a significant figure.

After facing issues with their VFX artists and Anthony Mackie calling out the studio’s measures to maintain diversity, Marvel Studios has now found itself embroiled in a legal battle for copyright infringement. With the industry names signing on to a letter growing to reportedly near 1,000 (and counting) condemning The Zone of Interest director Jonathan Glazer’s very controversial Oscar acceptance speech, it looks to be taking on a life of its own since the March 10 Academy Awards, where his universally praised movie won the Best International Film Oscar and was nominated for four others including Best Picture.
The speech — in which he seemed, to many at least, to compare Israel’s war on Gaza and the deaths of thousands of Palestinians with the Nazis’ extermination of Jews during World War II — certainly made some in the audience uncomfortable, even uncertain just how to interpret it at the time. It has ignited a firestorm of protest by many, including big names and Academy members like Amy Pascal, Sherry Lansing, Eli Roth, Jennifer Jason Leigh and more. Academy Award-winning producer Daniel Dreifuss (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) has boarded “Red Men,” the latest feature from Mexico’s Hari Sama, best known for his lauded autobiographical pic “This is not Berlin,” which world premiered at Sundance in 2019.
Described as an “edgy and provocative coming-of-age story” about the life of Austrian expressionist painter Egon Schiele, “Red Men” hones in on Schiele’s role in reshaping European aesthetics through his intimate relationship with lover and muse, Dominik Van Osen.
Their bond inspired Schiele’s pioneering Expressionist style while also compelling the young artist to confront his sexually fluid identity amidst repressive laws banning homosexuality in turn-of-the-century Vienna. This romantic saga delves into the emotional complexities of two artistic companions turned lovers, which drove Egon’s artistic vision while he struggled to navigate society’s norms. Schiele, whose provocative art was known for its contorted body shapes and dramatic lines,...

At the start of 2022, in the lead-up to the Oscars, Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve was in the spotlight. So was the story of how close she came to quitting acting before Joachim Trier offered her the role of Julie in The Worst Person in the World, a film that catapulted her, then 34, to a certain level of fame with two unlikely Oscar nominations. Have two years of attention brought some airs and graces? Don’t count on it. “I ran away from home to Scotland,” Reinsve recalls to me across a table at Berlin’s Ritz Carlton. “I jumped on a plane because it was just £1 and then I stayed for a year. I had to go back for an acting-school audition but I also had to go home because my intestines hurt so much, because you drink so much. I worked in a bar when I was 17. I was way too young.

The awards ceremony for the 74th Berlin International Film Festival kicks off Saturday night, where this year’s jury, headed by 12 Years a Slave and Black Panther actress Lupita Nyong’o, will hand out the coveted Gold and Silver Bears.
Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha’s Iranian drama My Favourite Cake is being given good odds for an award this year. The drama, about a 70-year-old widow and her tentative attempts at romance with an age-appropriate taxi driver, was a critical fave. A win for the film would also send a political message after the Iranian government banned the directors from attending Berlin. If the jury picks out Cake for the Golden Bear it would be the third time in 10 years —following Jafar Panahi’s Taxi (2015) and There Is No Evil (2020) from Mohammad Rasoulof —that Berlin has given its top honor to Iranian directors in absentia. If Renate Reinsve hadn’t been offered the lead in Joachim Trier’s 2021 feature The Worst Person in the World, she was planning to quit acting and become a carpenter. After years of frustration with the roles being offered her in Norway, Reinsve had decided to try out Plan B: Learn woodworking and set up a carpentry school for young girls and women.
“I had just finished renovating my house,” Reinsve recalls, “and I really loved it, doing things with my hands, making something physical and real. So I thought: Maybe this is what I should be doing.”
But that call from Trier put Plan A back on the table. The Worst Person in the World, which Reinsve describes as an “anti-romantic romantic comedy,” premiered in Cannes and was an instant breakout. When it comes to director Piero Messina’s Another End, it’s almost necessary to begin with its ending. But only to say that its denouement isn’t unlike that of M. Night Shyamalan’s Sixth Sense, for how it confers meaning retroactively to the plot and will, most likely, leave you dumbfounded. Revealing more would mean spoiling this science-fiction film, which is as guilty of overtly sentimental dialogue as it is meticulous about revealing the rules of its world little by little. The screenplay’s last-minute plot twist is so astonishing that it all but makes one forget the hackneyed elements that structure the film.
What the atmosphere of Another End tells us from the start is that the world has become a perpetual penumbra. Its inhabitants look disaffected, if not depressed. That’s certainly the case with Sal (Gael García Bernal), who enters his elderly neighbor’s apartment...

Sal (Gael García Bernal) exists in a limbo — not the religious notion of a space between life and death, but a nonspace. He lives in a large apartment but appears to have no job or vocation. The sprawling metropolis around him is unnamed and uninteresting, a maze of tall buildings home only to the people who cross his path. The man has no hobbies or talents. In fact, there are only three things we know about Sal: he enjoys clubbing, loves his sister, and his wife, Zoe, is dead.

It’s ironic that memory is the central theme of Piero Messina’s Berlin Competition title “Another End,” when so many of its twists and turns are so directly lifted from other films that it feels like you’ve seen them before; even watching it for the first time feels like rewatching. But if that makes this elegiac literalization of the timeless theme of “what is grief but love persevering?” a rather edgeless experience it’s not a wholly unpleasant one. Less designed to provoke than to soothe, perhaps the very familiarity of much of the movie is a virtue, letting us enjoy its sleek surfaces safe in the knowledge that there’s nothing much lurking in the depths to alarm us.
Indeed, the story’s central alarming incident has happened some time before the film even begins: a car crash for which Sal (Gael García Bernal) believes he was...

What would you do if you could extend loved ones’ lives through their memories?
Another End, the latest film directed by Piero Messina and his writing team including Giacomo Bendotti, Valentina Gaddi and Sebastiano Melloni, boasts a cast led by Gael García Bernal, Renate Reinsve and Bérénice Bejo. It aspires to weave a complex narrative exploring the boundaries of human connection, the grieving process and the possibility of extending life through technological means. Yet, despite its ambitious premise, the film falls short of its potential, unraveling as a perplexing and ultimately unrewarding cinematic experience.
In a world where technology blurs the lines between life and death, Sal (Bernal) experiences a haunting blend of grief and hope. He visits an elderly couple; as they share tea, a disturbing scene unfolds. Men in white coats arrive, sedate the old man, wrap him in a white tarp, and whisk him away to Another End,...

Good news: Death is not the end of love any more than love is the end of death. On the contrary, you might find that losing someone can help you to find them in places you never thought to look when they were alive; distance can allow for clarity, and that clarity can allow for a new kind of closeness.
Bad news: That process is fraught with unanswerable questions, and we’re thinking up weird new ones to ask every day. Once upon a time you could leave it at: “How are you supposed to achieve closure when death opens so many doors to potential discovery?” Now, with the endless amount of digital artifacts we all carry in our pockets and the nascent promise that A.I. might be able to preserve someone’s consciousness for centuries to come, technology has compelled us to consider the practical applications of thought...

Gael Garcia Bernal grappled with questions of body and mind after death on Saturday at the Berlin Film Festival after starring in Another End, which is world premiering in Berlin.
Appearing in Italian director Piero Messina’s sci-fi drama, it turns out, changed the Mexican actor’s stance on death heralding the separation of the soul from the physical body. “Yes. It’s funny, normally I would lie and say yes, without really meaning it. But in this case, I really mean it,” Bernal declared.
Another End is set in a not-too-distant future has a novel way for people to ease the pain of grief over someone they’ve lost by introducing technology that implants the loved one’s memories in a rented body.

“This is a very, very romantic film,” Gael García Bernal said of his Berlin competition title, Another End.
The Mexican actor was speaking at the press conference for the pic this morning in the German capital alongside his co-stars Renate Reinsve, Bérénice Bejo, Olivia Williams, and Pal Aron.
“I’m very proud and happy to be part of a film,” he continued to say, that carries large elements of romance because “there aren’t so many romantic films around anymore.”
The fantasy drama is set in a near future in which new technologies allow the bereaved to temporarily bring back their departed loved ones in a different body to help them say goodbye. Bernal plays a man who loses the love of his life and is then encouraged by his sister (Bejo) to work through his grief with the help of this new technology. He connects with his dead lover...
